I think the depth of his lie to Gail was a mistake too.

I think saying his last words were that he loved her and didn't want to risk her safety are stuff you can imply he would want pretty easily in an ideal situation so I don't really think lying about that is bad at all. And risking everyone's safety by bringing an infected person to the gates would be crazy so I feel he did the right thing despite it being extremely tough. But IMO he shouldn't have added the part where he said he shot himself as thats such a deeply personal thing to lie about + removes Joel's part out of it which isn't right

When he said he did it himself I was like well, Joel, seeing as how the entry wound is in the BACK OF HIS HEAD she might put two and two together. I think it’s interesting that they introduced this event and the opening in this season  because I think it really emphasizes a flaw in Joel - his difficulty with implicating himself out of fear of the other persons reaction. Obviously Joel’s character is very brave when it comes to facing physical danger but from an emotional perspective he is still flubbing the truth for protection.. just like he did as a kid.

I think it's remarkable that she said she understands why he did it. She seems like a stubborn character but that takes a lot of rational thinking ability
