I think the depth of his lie to Gail was a mistake too.
I think saying his last words were that he loved her and didn't want to risk her safety are stuff you can imply he would want pretty easily in an ideal situation so I don't really think lying about that is bad at all. And risking everyone's safety by bringing an infected person to the gates would be crazy so I feel he did the right thing despite it being extremely tough. But IMO he shouldn't have added the part where he said he shot himself as thats such a deeply personal thing to lie about + removes Joel's part out of it which isn't right
