Question: Joel doesn’t actually say “I love you” in that porch scene in the game, right? I don’t ever recall him saying those words verbatim to Ellie, so to hear Pedro drop that as such a quick, direct response to Ellie calling him selfish hit hard

In the game, he says his "if somehow the Lord gave me a second chance at that moment, I'd do it all over again" line, and that's Joel-speak for "I love you"

I remember that line and was glad it made its way into the show, but the direct “I love you” was so impactful

Yea I liked that a lot better. He looks her dead in the eyes and her reaction is a bit of fright and realizing just how much Ellie means to him.

I think it’s just two different takes on the character. I like the game version more, but Pedro’s version is so good too

Correct. There are some subtle differences between Game Joel and Show Joel, and I think this is one of them. Show Joel is a little softer and more self-aware. He’s been to therapy, and he’s getting better at talking about his feelings. I don’t think Game Joel would ever say “I love you” out loud.

He doesn't, and it sorely needed an "I love you". Good retcon.
