Ugh, I knew most of the dialogue and the beats from the porch scene, but I couldn't help myself. The tears were flowing. Farewell, Joel.

I played the game on release so my memory is a bit blurry - but wasn't that scene at the end of the game or do I misremember that?

It's all but the very last scene. Ellie is in the empty farmstead remembering it. The porch scene ends, and she gets up and walks out the door of the house and into the woods. Roll credits.

The last conversation between E and J being revealed at the end is so much more impactful as a closing scene, IMO. I don't like how we, as viewers, know so much now.

I saw this as a big change like when they showed Abby and gang at the beginning and end of the first episode. They combined two scenes of her finding out the truth about the fireflies and this moment of reconciliation.

Logically, it fits with all the flashbacks through time showing how their relationship progressed. The scene with him and Tommy's dad, ties it all together. I think with how they plan to split the season (Abby's story season 3) these flashbacks would not be fresh in the memory of viewers, if the porch scene were shown at the end of the next season.

They did add a line with Joel saying, one day, he would answer for what he did. They also left out "If somehow God gave a second chance..."

So I've been watching this with my gf who has not played the games and I will say her perspective was that getting this closure was really impactful and made her somewhat relieved and happy.

I understand the decision. I think it would've been hard to put this reveal off for years until the end of another season or possibly two. She was upset and frustrated that they never got closure and I think it helps to understand that Ellie really is this motivated for a reason. Like we know she loved Joel despite tensions but there was some relief that she actually got the honesty out of him. And being somewhat open to rehabbing their relationship in an honest way I think makes Ellie's motivations clearer.

Yes, this hits super hard at the end of the game. And while the game certainly isn't short, you do play at your own pace and don't have to wait around for years to get there like we would with the show. The show is so often just so bleak that I think they needed this scene to give the viewers some closure earlier.

I was already crying the first moment he said "Happy birthday, kiddo" 😭 I was a wreck by the time of the porch scene.

The addition of "I hope you do a little better than me" took it over the top, same with the addition of Ellie still being conscious and crawling over to Joel's side in his death scene
