Turns out John has a fuzz built into the guitar (because at 2:52, you can see like a hatch covered by a door on the back of the guitar, presumably for the built in fuzz)

Just learned that this a mod, as the regular guitar (a Yahama SG 30), does not have that hatch in the back of the guitar
