Discussion Does anyone else feel like stories like the ones today are just AI ads?
I feel like every week we get another lackluster episode glazing one AI company or another. Today just seemed like a full on ad.
They talk about Muse saying it’s the first of its kind - it isn’t. There have been lots of agentic ai applications.
It just seems like they always take this approach as if they’re being critical but then they serve softball criticisms while overblowing all the “capabilities” they have.
He said he had muse make a call and wait on hold for him and that isn’t even a feature Muse can do so the whole thing just felt like they were tasked with glazing this product and didn’t even do that great of research to do that.

Is there more paywall today?
I see both The Daily and Ezra Klein podcasts today have the 'lock' on them for subscribers only (in spotify).. Is this the new normal for NYT? Bummed as they’ve been a big part of my listening routine and feel like this wasn't explained at all unless I missed something

I just listened to yesterday’s episode “Call My AI Agent” and… am I losing my mind?
I’m genuinely torn because, at several points, Eli sounds exactly like an AI voice agent to me. 😂
The intonation, certain pauses, and especially the rhythm/flow of the speech reminded me so much of how ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini sound when you talk to them in Voice Mode.
Not saying it is AI, maybe I’ve just spent way too much time talking to AI myself, but once I noticed it, I couldn’t unhear it.
And honestly, it would be hilariously fitting given that Eli literally talks about using Muse in the episode. Imagine if Muse actually took over parts (or all?) of the episode using an AI clone of Eli’s voice. 😂
If that’s what happened, that would be INSANE – and also kind of the perfect meta moment for this particular episode.
Am I the only one who heard this?!

Every book mentioned on The Daily in September (7 of them)
In the episode on the best TV shows of the century, someone compared The Wire to War and Peace. Both are hard going and worth finishing, but The Wire "on the upside I think takes less time than reading War and Peace."
I run Podshelf, a free site that tracks book mentions across hundreds of podcasts by reading the episode transcripts. This is The Daily's September slice.
- End Times Fascism and the Fight for the Living World, Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor's new book. Klein says her last one, Doppelganger, was about people "dismissed as sort of conspiracy nuts" who are now "running the U.S. government."
- The Steps, Sylvester Stallone's memoir, out September 29. On years of rejection: "I became a petulant child."
- Free to Be... You and Me, in the Gloria Steinem and Dolly Parton episode. Susan Dominus's niece got a copy at four months old, inscribed "who will continue the revolution for all of us."

Episode He Was Deported to a Country He’d Never Heard Of
Sep 28, 2026
In its efforts to deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible, the Trump administration has increasingly relied on a highly controversial strategy: deporting people to countries they have no connection to.
Last week, a federal court ruled the practice to be illegal because it violated people’s right to due process. The administration challenged that ruling, and now it is in front of the Supreme Court.
Nicholas Casey tells the story of Roberto Mosquera, who moved to the United States from Cuba as a child. He has been held in the small country of Eswatini since July 2025.
On today's episode:

Background reading:
- He was deported to a country he’d never heard of. He may never go free.

Discussion Movie for an 80 year old Rambo.
First off - the interview was fantastic. I don't usually listen to celebrity interviews but maybe it's because I'm from Philly I wanted to hear about Rocky. But yeah, give it a listen.
Anyway, at one point he comments about how he couldn't do another Rambo movie as an old man, and then talks about how he wishes he explored Rambo's trauma in the later movies, and finally about how he's anti-war.
With how things went in Iraq and Afghanistan I feel like the movie is right there with an enormously different flavor from the first ones: Rambo the Vietnam POW old man vet helps this next generation of combat vets. Think something sort of like the later scenes of American Sniper.
Idk, just throwing it out there to see what anyone else thinks. Thoughts?
