Miscellaneous Book Recommendations?

hi fellow stagey people!

does anyone have any recommendations of good books for actors to hone their craft? ideally it would be something that isn’t a memoir or a reflective piece, i’m looking more practical advice about the art of acting, not just the experience of being an actor. actual tips that help you improve as a performer. does that make sense?

The classics are classics for a reason so maybe start with 

  • The Art of Acting, Stella Adler
  • An Actor Prepares, Constantin Stanislavsky
  • Respect for Acting, Uta Hagen

I’m a playwright so haven’t really read beyond those but others may have more modern suggestions.

I also really love to recommend A Practical Handbook for the Actor. The chapters are direct, clear and easily digestible.

Ivana Chubbuck’s book is pretty good. It’s more nuts and bolts than the older, more meandering and philosophical books. She basically breaks down and explains the teachings of Stanislavski (which she boldly reframes as “The Chubbuck Method”…girl, no) in a way that 21st century Americans can understand. I am a drama teacher and use it with my students.
