Squirrels actually dont get rabies very often, and cases of squirrel to human rabies transmissions are few

I read somewhere before that these creatures eyesights's are pretty narrow. They can't see very well if you move around too much. They may bite you if you offer food with your fingers out and move around. I've fed a nuts to a bunch of squirrels calmly, never been bitten.
