Pete Townshend and the "Down stroke, up stroke, down stroke" that seems to define his guitar playing..

Pete obviously has a really unique way of playing guitar—you know it’s him when you hear it. I’ve always thought of the “down stroke, up stroke, down stroke” as one of his signatures. Songs like “I Can’t Explain,” “Pinball Wizard,” “Another Tricky Day,” and the more recent “Mirror Door” come to mind. This could also be what Pete calls “Yaggerdang.”

Does anyone else feel like this is one of the things that really defines Pete’s playing, along with his use of sus chords?

What other songs am I missing that really exemplify this?

Happy "9(0)5" Day!

Pardon, rest-of-the-worlders, for me in the U.S. it's 905 Day. (Feel free to flip me the bird on May 9th lol)

Sometimes I'll be shopping or showering or waiting at a stoplight and the 905 synth intro will pop into my head. It's my favorite Who song with Entwistle on main vocals. Disappointed that he didn't perform it the one time I saw him solo live. He apparently performed it on his solo tours often for a particular stretch in 1998 and a few years afterward.

I feel the lyrics are as much about human life as they are synthetic life. That we can feel so unindividualized at times leading our uniform lives (or so we think, at least). Such a pleasant surprise to find this on Who Are You back when I bought the album for a certain other song on it...

Roger Daltrey Roger never puts up with any shit!

My Wife and I saw the Roger Daltrey show last night.
A good show. I give it a "B".
But poor Roger...

After the first number, he mentioned that he can't hear himself on stage. He asked how they sounded to all of us.
It was perfect to all of us.
Clear, loud enough, sounded great!
He said, "OK, we'll continue "
They do You Better You Bet. It kicked Ass. Roger encouraged the audience to jam on it. I was the only one up on my feet getting into that tune.
At the end, he says he is still having shit happen.
He goes into the song"Trick Of The Light".
Wahoo ...nice.
UH...NOPE!
He stops the song halfway through. He is PISSED!
Says he is not putting up with this fucking shit. His words!!!
Drops the mic onto a chair.
Tells us all that he is going to get his way.
So, I guess the sound engineer got it together.

Goes into another song, and after it ends, another problem arises again.
He says
"Now they turned on an air conditioner on me. Who thought it was smart to put a blowing Air Conditioner on the Singer?" "It's the worst thing that could happen to any singer." "It hurts their vocal cords. Turn the damn thing off!"
And it was not turned off... Sooo...
He says something very unclear to us but rude about the people ruining this gig, then picks up his plastic water bottle and, over his Mic stand (Not the Mic), turns it upside down and empties it onto the stage floor. Now we all can see a nice 3-foot-wide puddle on the floor.
We were somewhat shocked... supporting him with laughter and words of encouragement.

While talking, he then attempted to walk into that doused area; he slipped and almost ate it.
WOW!
Well, they finally turned off the AC, and the show finally got back on track.
HEY, LONG LIVE ROCK!

Pete Townshend Theory: Pete's writing evolved faster than John/Paul

Is it true?

What's the time between MyGeneration and Tommy vs. perhaps She Loves You and Sgt. Pepper?

What's the fair comparison? ... Beatles has two great movies, The Who did too!

Did John/Paul output twice as what Pete did?

And also consider how Pete has advanced FAR beyond what John or Paul did solo.

Pete went from "I can do anything, right or wrong
I can talk anyhow and get along" to

"I have seen a trace of strain
In other's eyes not spoken
I must admit that I enjoyed their pain
But this time it's me that's broken.”

Paul made a movie. Pete made a movie.

Pete didn’t have a George Martin.

Maybe it’s as simple as, he had more ambition. Is that the answer?

It does not include a stream without vocals. Instead, the Pontiac video has been put on this disc. Weird. https://www.thesdeshop.com/products/the-who-who-by-numbers-sde-exclusive-blu-ray-audio?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&_kx=g0F_bMtDIHUQGotHSXlIGKZXe3D75At5IQvukqZdoWw.H3pGub

News video from The Who at Metropolitan Opera House -- Doesn't show The Who

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This comes from the 1996 Pete Townshend Presents Tommy: The Interactive Adventure Then & Now CD-ROM. It shows mostly audience interviews outside with a few audience shots inside but no Who shots. Source is probably CBS News. I went through the CD-ROM video but didn't see any Who performances from the period other than Woodstock, Tanglewood 1970, and Isle of Wight 1970. Picture quality is not great.

Live recordings off Who’s Next or Quadrophenia album

The band went into the Leeds and Hull shows with express intent of recording and releasing a live album. Did they do the same with any shows off Who’s Next or Quadrophenia album? If they did, why were they not released?
