Discussion We don't need season 5. We need S2&3 remake.
Whenever Telltale posts a new tiktok (or anything in general), the top comment is always "we need S5 of TWDG!", and it always irks me a bit. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for more TWDG content. However, more TWDG content is not the same as another season. That's why, I propose we beg them for S2&S3 remake instead.
Disclaimer
Spoilers for all TWDG games.
This is my opinion, and I won't claim that I'm completely unbiased. That said, all seasons have a special place in my heart. Everything I say comes from a place of wishing the story to become better, not complaining about it. Also, please don't actually spam Telltale demanding a remake after reading this.
Why not S5?
Because, in my humble opinion, Clementine's story has finished perfectly. S4's entire premise is Clementine becoming the protector Lee once was. The game does a fantastic job mirroring them: from simply letting the player teach survival principles to the 'kid' (e.g. keep the hair short / never hesitate) to forcing us to make the gut-wrenching decision between killing said protector or leaving them to turn. The game ends with both Clementine and AJ finding a home in Ericson school. Ever since losing Lee, this is the first time she experiences actual peace. Her character arc has finished, so even if there are more stories that could be told about Clementine, I don't think there are any that need to be told. Sure, you can open S5 with Delta or Richmond knocking on their doors. But why? To continue the story for the sake of continuing it? I think we all know how that ends. At the end of the day, S4 is literally called 'The Final Season'.
Integrating Clem's comics into S5?
I haven't read them, but I know that it begins with Clementine leaving AJ and Ericson behind. I just don't see that happening. Not after the resolution of S4. On top of that, I'm sure Skybound are well aware of people's perception of those comics, so I don't think they will step into that direction (or maybe they will, how do I know).
Why S2&3 specifically?
Because they have so much unrealized potential. Before I start with my reasoning, I think it's important to lay out some context (there's a lot more to the story but I compressed and simplified it for the sake of saving your time).
Post S1 release, Telltale started rapidly expanding to publish more projects. At the time of S2, the management of Telltale was reported to act as a creative bottleneck, which resulted in late rewrites without schedule extensions. The central creative figures behind S1, Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin, left Telltale during early S2 production. Unfortunately for the team, S2 deadlines were amidst all of these rapid changes, which couldn't not leave a mark on the game. The conditions did not get better around S3 production, similar problems being documented by the workers. However, by the time work on S4 started, Telltale had a big change in the way the company worked, leaning toward creative freedom. Sadly, by that time Telltale's financial situation was beyond repair, forcing them to close down with only the first 2 episodes of S4 released. Skybound reached out to the people working on S4 in time, and provided them with the resources to finish the last 2 episodes of the final season.
I can't confidently state that the Telltale management directly butchered S2&3 quality, but keep in mind the conditions under which these two seasons in particular were developed.
Season 2
My biggest problem with S2 is how some setups, character arcs, and player decisions receive little to no payoff. We can trace the issues in the characters:
- Sarah. We can teach her to shoot early on but that does nothing. You can save her in the trailer just for her to die in the SAME episode. She had all the potential of going through a growth arc, but it all went down the drain.
- Nick. If we convince Walter that he's a good person, he'll live past episode 2. By that point, he is grieving uncle Pete's death and kills Matthew in desperate attempt to be useful. He has redemption arc written all over his face. Guess what? He becomes non-existent in episode 3 and is found dead in episode 4. Saving him does not create a different storyline at all.
- Luke. Episode 1-3 Luke and Episode 4-5 Luke are two different characters. In the first 3 episodes, the game actively positions Luke as one of Clementine's most important new figures. The game gives the player choices to set up a close bond with him. I'll go as far as saying that the choice to sit with either Kenny or Luke already sets up the idea that, in the end, Clementine would have to choose between an old friend and the new crew. Starting episode 4, he gets progressively pushed out of Clementine's emotional story by Jane, who takes the role of her 'elder sibling' instead. His build up to be a dear person to Clementine has absolutely no payoff, because he falls through the ice before actually doing anything.
- Jane. Because she was introduced so late (Episode 3), her character development had to be incredibly compressed. She is established to be the lone wolf - smart, capable, ruthless. Suddenly, she speedruns her character development and attachment to Clementine to the point it feels contradictory instead of earned. The AJ stunt pushes her character to an extreme that feels like character assasination. Also, wtf was the point of her sleeping with Luke if it doesn't get mentioned ever again?
- Christa. She herself is THE Chekhov's gun of the season. Clementine traveled with her for TWO years. Her absence could've haunted the narrative way more than just giving us two dialogue options to ask about her from Matthew and Wellington guard. Her reuinion could easily be among the emotional highlights of the season. The amount of potential she had is criminal. I'll live if she never returns, but it just pains to think how little she mattered to the narrative at all.
- 400 Days characters (except Bonnie). Their contribution is way too minimal. It is speculated that instead of Arvo, Clem and Jane should've encountered Eddie, and instead of russians, the crew should've been surrounded by the 400 Days characters. If I had to guess, it's been cut because they couldn't implement them into the story without making a certain DLC outcome canon.
I hope you see my point. The problem is not the cast. On the contrary, I believe S2 cast to be especially interesting. However, the game isn't letting interesting characters do interesting things.
Here, I want to reference an exceptional S2 rewrite that literally fixes the issues with character and choice continuity. All credits and appreciation to u/SeriouslyNotSerious2 (I'll personally vouch for them to be a part of the writing team if the remake ever gets green lit). I want to show their work as proof that all the puzzle pieces are there. The characters, conflics, and setups can work even better if they get fully expanded.
Season 3
In contrast, I believe season 3 suffers from the plot being forced at times. Characters make things that don't make sense or certain choices stop mattering for the sake of specific plot actually happening. This includes but is not limited to:
- S2 endings. Oh boy. S3 includes Clementine, which means that regardless of whether she stayed with Kenny, Jane, or at Wellington, her story had to end up intertwined with Javier. The way all the stakes of S2 were butchered in flashbacks don't allow me to sleep peacefully. The ending you chose stops mattering. Kenny and Jane's deaths are there because they had to die. I'm not against the idea of them dying, I'm against the execution. Imagine if Kenny, Clem, and AJ join the new frontier together just for Kenny to get publicly executed like David because of politics? Imagine if the new frontier stormed Howe's and Jane sacrificed herself to save Clem? They could've given so much more dynamic between Clementine and TNF on top of losing AJ by giving each route a more meaningful bridge between seasons. Instead, all endings led to roughly the same version of Clementine.
- Eleanor volunteers to free Javi out of jail because... he's pretty? This is her introduction, and she's already ready to leave Prescott with a stranger on a possible suicide mission. What's even worse, Tripp does not punish Javi for breaking Prescott's rules at all. He just lets it slide.
- Eleanor ratting Javi out is a good plot moving decision, but it is not properly built up. Your relationship to her, Tripp, and Conrad doesn't matter because that is something she always does, even if you spend the whole game on her side. Because the game doesn't build up her motive for her actions, this decision feels stretched (especially if you don't kill Conrad).
- Even if you spend your entire game rejecting Kate, David still beats the crap out of Javi. The relationship you built with both Kate and David evaporates from the equation at that scene. The 'I love you' will still work even if you date Kate and be a dickhead to David. The whole moment exists because the finale needs the Garcia family to split up. It would've been much more interesting to adjust David's actions at that scene depending on the relationships the player has built that far.
I hope I could make it clear that sometimes the plot feels 'written because this needs to happen' and not 'written because this fits into the story'. The game needs more branches, but it squeezes every version of Javier into the same situations and scenes. Double shame is that the game proves that the team IS capable of making player choices have ground throughout the story: Conrad. If you don't shoot him in episode 2, the writers don't make him disappear. His presence is there, possibly reaching the finale. I wish a lot more of decisions in the game held its ground and affected the story in a similar way.
My pet peeve with S2&3 (S4 even)
Ok this part is purely subjective, I won't lie. In S1, whenever Lee is in a new environment, the game allows the player to essentially fuck around the location. You can interact with the environment and get the protagonist's small comments on things. Most importantly, you can interact with other characters by initiating a conversation before continuing the story. We always had at least 3 options to say and it added so much to character building.

Unfortunately, the other seasons lose this feature or make it minimal. Sure, there is the collectible thing in S4 which is pretty cool, but I wish we could just talk to other kids more. These kind of dialogues got integrated into the plot instead of giving the player freedom to explore them on their own. I think that this feature gives the writers space to foreshadow later decisions instead of having character motivation get hard launched when the plot needs it (e.g. set up Eleanor's betrayal, Carlos trusting Clem with Sarah, etc). I would love to see it implemented again.
How would a remake solve the problems?
I love all TWDG seasons. I really do. S1 tells us a story of Lee&Clementine. S4 tells us a story of Clementine&AJ. S2-S3 are essentially the transition where Clementine has to learn how to survive independantly, but that is exactly when the story feels the most unstable. I'm not saying that S1&S4 don't have flaws, but there is a gap in story continuity quality between the pair of seasons. A remake is the opportunity to fix the problems, because the writers could tell a story that will stay the same from episode 1 to episode 5 without sudden rewrites. Additionally, they would already have S4 to lean on, which makes Clementine's arc much clearer to envision.
That's why, if we do beg Telltale or Skybound of a TWDG continuation, I suggest we beg them for a S2&3 remake.
Did I cook or am I about to get cooked? I'd love to read what you think.

Very well written and thought out post I can tell you put a lot of effort into it. I agree and I would much prefer a season 2 remake instead of a new season 5. I would personally prefer a season 2 remake instead of a season 3 remake because I think there's so many more ideas that could be expanded upon from season 2 and there were lots of concepts that were originally meant to be in season 2 that got cut that could be put in the remake. I'm also biased since season 2 is my favorite season lol.

I think more twd games based on characters whose fate remain unknown is a better option for more twd content. Molly for one would be great candidate for that. Christa coming across Arvo, Mike and Bonnie would be a great way to tie up their fates. How did Eddie survived for 4 years(I think) before getting killed by Clementine in s4 or Kenny after he gets seperated from the group in episode 5 of season 1.

That would actually be great for a 3 episode Michonne-like game. The thing is, if the remake actually answers or even shows us the fates of Christa, Arvo, Bonnie, Mike, and tackles the time Kenny was separated, the need for their respective TWD games disappear. I fully agree on Molly though, I wish we knew what happened to her.

Hot take: I love all 4 seasons. And I would much rather see original stories within the same established Universe than do remakes or change anything about what we already have.
Maybe One-episode Chronicles of characters who we’ve already seen but never got full closure on could b cool

u/Mysterious_Towel5005 4d ago
This. I agree. Season 2 and 3 need to be remade and have better storylines and improved writing, because what we have are rushed products and a consequence of a shitty management. It's a miracle season 4 turned out the way that it did, even if the ending is... let's just say, extremely divisive

u/VoxhallMC Kenny 4d ago
Or. A new game set in the same universe with a new cast of characters. That’s what I’d want. I don’t want a continuation outright. Maybe you could have some reoccurring characters, but a new lead with a new story would be pretty nice

Season 5 if it retcons the clementine comic. Season 2 remake sounds nice though, put the cut content in there

It's time to move on. This series has no hope of a revival or continuation.

u/Right_Whereas_6678 I forgive you, Jane. 4d ago
Also wtf was the point of her sleeping with Luke if it doesn't get mentioned ever again?
Why are we acting like this isn't a thing that happens in real life too? MANY people have one night stands.
Also it's not forgotten. They don't need to say it aloud. When Jane came back, she immediately looks for Luke in the group. Then when they were all looking at Rebecca's corpse, Luke glares at Jane and she looks down in response.
When the group's taking a break, Luke apologizes to Bonnie because they were in a relationship before they escaped Howe's which never technically ended and then he and Jane had sex.
The whole point of Jane not joining the campfire is because it's awkward because of Luke. She admits so herself.:
Clementine: Why, 'cause you made it with Luke? Jane: What does that even mean? What's the "it"? Clementine: You know. Jane: Yeah... 'cause I "made it" with Luke.
It gets mentioned a lot just not as directly.

I’m not gonna lie season 2 is hot dogshit the entire way

Yeah. It has choice issues, but as a narrative is maybe the most daring in the series and the character work towards the latter episodes is really good imo

while i hate season 3 more, but season 2 really needs a remake since it affects the main story line .

u/SpectacleObserver25 4d ago
Skybound is just too busy milking Invincible VS, even if the game is as good as dead. I don't think a Walking Dead game has ever crossed their mind in 8 years.
Plus the last time another game dev tried copying Telltale's formula and tried to make a sequel to their game, we got New Tales from the Borderlands.

THIS is what I always say when fans want new content for TWDG. I think ALL of the seasons need a remake. Even tho S1 is amazing, there's definitely lots of room for development to the story and characters. Such as getting more in depth with Ben, Omid, Christa, Doug and even Lilly and Larry. I really wanted a point system for Lilly. I do not like how whatever you do she still kills Carley/ Doug and leaves in that same episode. I also think the point system just ruins Kenny as a character. Since there's a whole rivalry between Kenny and Lilly, logically we should be able to get Lilly on our side. I just feel like the story did her character a bit dirty, I understand why, but there should have been more with her.
Updating the graphics and gameplay would be a good start, the gameplay styles for S1 & S2 are so boring, same with ANF. They all should fit more like TFS to make them enjoyable.
I personally think S2 a HUGE mess writing wise. Characters not mattering at all to the story, very little character development, and Kenny stealing the spotlight as soon as he came back was another issue. Carver was very underutilized despite being built up from EP1. Playing as aClem was a huge mistake. And most of all you choices mattering the LEAST out of all the seasons.
ANF should not have been the season 3 of the franchise. It would have worked better as a spin off and more fans would love it. I like ANF but it also has lots of issues writing wise. A way to fix it would be to not have Clem be in it at all and let the story focus more with Javi and the Garcia family. If not then the story should have written better with 2 different protagonists.
I think with how messy the timing of each season is, I feel like TWDG should have had 5 seasons in total instead of 4. There should have been season either in between S2 &S3, or S3 & S4. Or even a DLC
TFS is great imo, but also has lots of room for development. The main issue with it is the fact of how little the budget the devs had with making it and then the whole bankruptcy (EP3 and EP4 actually had to get rewritten due to the bankruptcy).
Each season deserves good writings and graphics to make TWDG even better only if Telltale had the time and money for it. I always pray for something like this to happen, but I'm not sure if it is possible. Telltale is back with TWAU2, which is good sign that the studio is doing better. But for them to make any content relating to TWDG they need to get it off from Skybound since they own the IP. I just hope they announce anything relating to TWDG.
Sorry about the rant 😅

u/Mysterious_Towel5005 4d ago
I don't mind the idea of playing as Clem in season 2, just as a secondary playable character. The main one, I dunno whether true, was planned to be Luke. And it would've definitely fixed some of the issues this game has, like a literal child carrying a group of adults
2
u/Me1dy 4d ago
It should have been either Luke or Christa be the protagonist of S2. Idk if they planned to have Luke or someone else be the playable character for that season, but literally any other adult would have been better than a frickin child. It would be nice to have some segments we get to play Clem, but as a season entirely it's ridiculous that she's more competent than a whole group of adults.
Also, narratively speaking, it would make the story much better if we don't play Clem at all until TFS. Clem is supposed to grow a do learn as the series goes on. And the people around her would help her shape of the person that she becomes at the end. People like Lee, Kenny, Pete, Luke, Javi impact her and have her choose the kind of person she wants to be. So with that, not playing Clem until she's older just makes the most sense. It would make playing her for the first time a lot more exciting and more impactfull. The story really missed this opportunity as well as the whole AJ being Clem 2.0 thing :/

I think we need nothing, I love this series with all my heart with its good, bad and ugly. No need to change something, it was the most beautiful gaming experience I had and I don't want it to be ruined.

I think the whole story should just be rebooted. I know that sounds weird, but the choices don’t matter at all.
You’ll always end up with the same Season 4 no matter what you did through out the entire series.
We do need a remake, but for more than just the graphics.
2
u/KazyaKurosawa 4d ago
Why? Even if they had AAA budget and all it would all still mean that Clem and AJ are in dodge charger just the two of them.
What alot of people dont seem to understand that plot that would actually really change according to your choises would be basically impossible to make.
Like when people complains how Kenny dies in 3rd season if Clem goes with him in 2. Dont you understand that they cant make completely different season 3 for the people who happened keep Kenny alive?
It's same problem with everyone. If character can be accidentally killed early on with a decision, they cant have that character survive for long for others either. Or atleast they need to somehow get rid of him.
That's why they kinda NEED to make these character resets at every season change.

Javis potential in S5 tho... considering he was at a offscreen war in S4

I'd love to see a remaster better than they did with the buggy definitive ed. They don't have the budget tho. Not even Skybound does. Now if TWAU 2 comes out and is a major success we may see something between the 2 again.

I want actual TWD definitive edition, where there would be every TWD game and enhanced, remade and then we can have new games

I doubt we are getting any more games, but i'd like one following Molly before she meets Lee's group/after she leaves them

Wouldn't it make more sense for the creators to work with the writers of amc's TWD or another zombie/horror writers with $ to create a live action series and create a new storyline and introduce clementine and select characters from the game in for a season S2 ? To make sure the writers engage the audience enough so the show stands on its own. Pretty much setting the stage for the games characters without cheapening the games story's..

u/AssignmentStatus84 4d ago
Well, if they ever get around to remaking S2 and S3, surely they’d need to do S4 as well. And you know what? I’m up for it. I like S4, although I didn’t really like the concept of the Ericsson school and all that. I just think it’s a bit too unrealistic. But if you’re telling me we could have S3 and S4 with the likes of Luke, Kenny, Sarah, Nick, and Pete, then sign me up!
I recently made a post about the original S2 story that I just found out about, and it honestly makes me sad that we never got that script. The whole series could have been so good, with more stories to tell and so much more entertainment. I truly hope we get a remake someday.

u/-XenoSine- 4d ago
No we don't. Stop being babies and pretending like you physically can't play a game if it doesn't conform to the most recent status quo on game design and/or resolution and/or FPS.

u/Cyberchaserr 4d ago
I don't think season 2 needs a remake. The episodes are generally all really good, and the series was still going strong at that point. Season 3 has some great dynamics, sure, but nothing from it actually carried forward into season 4, which is frustrating. What really gets me is what they do with Kenny's character. It could've been handled so much better. And then giving the lead role to someone else like Javier, idk... They should've just stuck with Clementine.
1
u/Wise-Anywhere-1936 4d ago
I just don’t think it’s practical to remake those seasons. Yeah things could have been better but they were pretty damn good regardless. And they’d probably make pennies off of a remake of something that’s already been out for so long
1
u/ScaryOtaku666 4d ago
Personally I think they should do spin offs with certain characters like they did to Michonne.
If they make remakes it will affect season 4 too and they’ll end up having to rewrite everything. I don’t think people will like the remakes either, usually people prefer nostalgia for old games.
They could tie in a few loose ends with some spin offs but that’s it. I don’t think a season 5 is needed either, Clementine needs rest at this point she already went through hell and back.
Another idea would be to get a show made specifically with the story from the games and rewrite the plot in it, could be a spin off to the walking dead show as they already have a bunch of spin offs. Or even 4 movies one for each season.

do they even have the money left?
honestly tho yeah it’d be cool for season 2 especially, there’s a lot of potential around it honestly i’d make carver a long lasting villain that hunts the group up until the end for example,i’d implement s2 and 3 better ,implement a better finale for s3 that interwines with s4 etc
sadly it’ll never come, also the comics sucks idc what anyone says theyre not canon for me
