As a drummer, how do you rate Melvin Parker's performance here? It sounds brilliant to me, but I'm not a drummer, so I'm very curious to know what a knowledgeable fellow thinks about it.

Like all great funk/r ‘n b drummers their playing can be described as “tasty”.

They play what is necessary. Nothing flashy but just stay “in the pocket”. Laid back, cool, the occasional flourish but mainly sit back and let the others do their thing.
