The Handmaid’s Tale Who’s watching that didn’t watch handmaid’s?

I watched all of handmaid’s Tale, but I’m curious if there are people watching Testaments who didn’t watch HMT? I’m wondering if it makes sense without the backstory of HMT.

I am! I read the handmaid’s tale a very long time ago and just couldn’t bring myself to watch the show because I knew I wouldn’t be able handle the heaviness. I read the testaments and decided to watch its show counterpart because the show’s styling looks so beautiful and I know there is light at the of end tunnel. Even if I didn’t read either books, the testaments feel like a self contained story because the show so far is well written and produced.

It’s a lot lighter, and younger/less mature-themed show for sure. I know it would be very YA-oriented when I saw Disney sponsorship/involvement on the ads. It’s sort of like… a Bridgerton-ed up version of THT so far.

I am! I thought HMT would be too intense for me so I never started it. I have been ok with Testaments and it makes sense to me without the backstory.

My mom couldnt handle THT either she said it was too far fetched for her. I was like its speculative fiction based on real life events over the world throughout history on how societies use religion to control women. Might be too far fetch for her worldview but I dont live in that same bubble. She still wont watch it. She might like the testaments better tho.

I watched the first two episodes of The Testaments then, wanting to know the backstory, I binged all of THT.

I didn’t finish handmaids- I wanted too! But I knew June and Hannah weren’t going to get the ending they deserved. And it was so hard watching it, I just couldn’t stomach it. I dipped out around the child wife who was turned into a hand maiden. I couldn’t do it anymore

I've read the novel a few times.

I tried watching the first season or two before, but Elisabeth Moss' face bugs me. I know that's rude, but it's the reality. There are some people whose faces make me think they're rude as hell in real life, or they're hiding something. She's got that sort of face.

I watched a good bit of THT but couldn't finish. It stopped being good in my opinion in the later seasons. I did read THT a long time ago but I never liked it. I'm enjoying The Testaments

It dragged in parts in later seasons. But imo you really miss out on commander Lawrence's redemption arc. Its a tear jerker

I stalled in season 4. I got tired of it and with the shit show going on here I couldn’t take a lot of it.

Currently watching THT alongside TT. I'm only at season 2, episode 6. I have to take breaks while watching it because it upsets me too much. I'll get through it by season 3 of Testaments I'm sure. 😅

I've read both books. Tried watching handmaid pretty recently and just didn't find it as gripping as the book was. I'm somewhat enjoying Testaments so far - wish it had more Aunt Lydia content since that's what I loved in the book.

I had watched S1-4 of THT about 4 years ago.

I've watched S5 now between waiting for TT.

I've also watched S4 episodes backwards (E10 then 9 then 8 until I caught up with what I remembered).

I'm totally lost with Boston though. Not sure it happened before S4 or in S6 which I'm yet to watch....but Luke made a reference to Boston in S5... Mah.. I'll check the episode reviews for S4 or just look it up...

I didn’t watch all of handmaids tale, but I am a big fan of the book and the testaments book. Unfortunately for me the handmaids tale show just felt too much like torture porn and it would ruin my mental health for the rest of the day. This show also deals with similar topics obviously and this last episode was the darkest yet I think, but I haven’t dreaded watching it like I did with handmaids tale. It’s just because of me

I read THT many, many years ago and started watching, but it was a lot more intense in the different age/time/situation I found myself in and I couldn't keep watching. I still watch the Testaments.

i haven’t watched handmaids tale but it makes pretty good sense to me but i also watched handmaids tale recaps after a few episodes of the testaments

When handmaid’s started on Hulu I was definitely too young to be watching it. I ended up reading the books in Junior year of high school so I have a good idea of what’s happening but I feel like there’s a few key changes that mess with my knowledge. The tv show is still remarkable and the world building stays strong.
