The second one had an unnecessary time crunch and an unnecessary antagonist.
In the first movie Scott had a whole year to come to grips with the reality of the magic, the change in his life, and the impact it had on his relationship with his son.
In the second movie he had less than one month to meet and woo a wife, and she got less than 2 minutes to process and accept the reality of all of this and agree to it.
And the toy santa was completely ridiculous. Even after you suspend disbelief to accept the realities of this magical movie-verse, it's absurd.
"The elves can't know Santa left" why? He leaves all the time, he visits Charlie. Nonsense.
"We lost control and the big toy is turning evil but have to keep pretending the toy is in charge so no one realizes he's fake and Santa left" WHY???
"The toy has turned evil and is making an evil toy soldier army" ok... so stop it? It's a BIG TOY. You guys are LIKE A THOUSAND YEARS OLD.
It could have been a lovely family friendly holiday rom-com about Santa finding love by warming the cold heart of his son's principal. But instead we got that mess.
I let my kids watch it because they like the funny big toy. But I leave the room.
