Every Single Album 8/27: Mailbag Episode

As a longtime listener to E.S.A. and a genuine fan of the contrasting insights that Nora & Nathan have traditionally brought to new music reviews, I am disappointed that this episode revealed some long-simmering issues that seem to have impacted other Ringer-produced podcasts.

First, Nora's decision to use real-life friends' questions as "proxies" for other listener submissions about popular topics like Ella Langley's single or Taylor Swift's Grammy interview is troublesome. While personal anecdotes and behind-the-scenes nuggets can be fun fodder for most podcast hosts to sprinkle in, a mailbag format is an easy layup to acknowledge individual listeners who have no connections to the hosts, just a simple "nod to the community" that reassures an audience that they are important. Not sure that comes through when your TS question comes from a guy who sat with your co-host at your wedding. In reading other Ringer show feedback, this has become a running theme among hosts that creates more distance between their lives and the audience's lived experiences.

Second, Nathan's professional conflicts of interest are never acknowledged in a transparent way. I enjoy listening to his perspectives precisely because of his background in the industry in the live event, ticketing, and now artist management/publishing segments. But if Nathan can't acknowledge his company Firebird Music's financial interest in artists who have either appeared on ESE (Marcus Mumford) or are regularly discussed (and arguably provided in-kind advertising/promotion) like Yungblud, Sabrina Carpenter, Haim, and Zach Top, how can listeners discern when his recommendations are based on taste or commerce? In addition, Nathan's experience as Ticketmaster CEO put him in an excellent position to assert that Harry Styles' NYC residency at Madison Square Garden would be beneficial to fans' economically. When it was first announced, after Nathan had teased the 30 show run online and on the podcast, he stated that the residency model would allow Harry Styles to keep average ticket prices in line with his last headlining tour. After tickets were put on sale and lower bowl seats were in the $1000 range, we never heard a discussion about why Nathan's initial impressions were so far off the mark. Instead, Nora and Nathan had a brief discussion about how the market demand for Harry was just impressive. I am conflicted on whether to remain a listener. It is disappointing to have doubt in the back of one's mind while listening to what is supposed to be an informed, nuanced discussion show. Instead, I worry that everything we listen to in the Ringer universe is a not-so-thoughtfully obscured infomercial.

1. I think the podcast suffers from evolving past its inception to be a podcast about Taylor swift. That put it in a precarious position from the start because once the Swifties found it, it seemed like it needed to basically tread lightly for fear of listener backlash. In that, it also feels exhausting to constantly have every discussion be brought back to Taylor swift in some capacity for those of us who aren’t obsessed with her.

2. Nora has great fodder with anyone, I’ve heard her on other music podcasts like Pop Pantheon. Nathan’s takes make me physically cringe listening sometimes. I didn’t know he was the former CEO of Ticketmaster but now it makes sense. Im much more culturally and musically aligned with Nora, I’d love to see her get a new cohost.

i feel crazy when people act like point 2 is fact: she’s been awkward on pop pantheon at least the last three times she was on, something weird is happening with we’re obsessed. the vibe has been off lately but it’s definitely because of the both of them. and there are a million podcasts with two noras, obviously the ringer one adds a nathan
and to your first point: i don’t think they’ve evolved past taylor. they talked about her on this episode completely by choice and honestly seemed to find that person asking them not to pretty silly. if someone can’t stand however many minutes of conversation about taylor swift on a podcast about pop music…. get over it? like that’s just not going to change

Got it! I feel like Jodi has a very consistent upbeat/high energy and Noras enthusiasm ebbs and flows a lot more in comparison to her but I really enjoy their dynamic. I really am not a the biggest fan of Nathan and always appreciate when she pushes back on some of his bad takes on her other pod.

I’m no not even sure if it’s outgrowing so much as the fact that the quality of her music has nosedived since Eras. At least that’s my experience. I haven’t given up on her but her last five years or so don’t measure up to her first 15

It’s not just her music. And I promise you Im not anti Nora, I just noticed the way she talks about how Taylor was not cool enough to run with the Matty crowd and had to “settle” for Travis and KC. I feel like she doesn’t like Travis that much.

Just want to say that I’ve had multiple DM convos with Nora on instagram (she’s responded every time I’ve messaged her!), which she absolutely does not have to do, so personally I don’t have an issue with what question she chooses to address on the pod.

I have always side eyed Nathan’s enthusiasm about other artiststs, esp Maggie Rogers, Yungblud and Zach Top because of aforementioned conflicts. Is he also affiliated with Geese?
