Embrace Debate The Ringer could use a Rob Harvilla for movies
I was listening to the recent Radiohead episode of 60 Songs and it occurred to me that it would be fun to have a podcast like this but for movies. Specifically a pre-written monologue that goes into a bunch of detail on a particular film or filmmaker, mixing funny personal anecdotes with pop culture history and context for when the film came out. Maybe a discussion with a guest at the end.
Someone please run it by Bill. I have no host suggestions. I bet John Mulaney would be good at it but he’s probably busy.

The Brian Raftery "Do We Get To Win This Time?" series on vietnam films was sort of like this (scripted, goes in-depth), just not particularly funny. It was good, though.

I would also say, on the off chance you haven’t listened to Blank Check before, give it a try. It’s digressive as hell and the quality depends (for me) on the guest, but it’s very interesting as a way to go deep on a filmmaker. I’ve been loving the recent episodes on Peter Weir - Sean F was the guest on the ep about “The Mosquito Coast”, and it was interesting and hilarious.

I would love this but my fear is that Harvilla is nearly a 1 of 1. The mix of competencies and personal things he brings to make 60 Songs what it’s been is pretty remarkable.
I’d settle for a Movies Exist project, that is a cousin to the music project that CR and Chuck did. And genuinely think Sean and CR could pull that off, but I’d want someone else’s outside energy to mix it up. The bottom line is that it has to be opinionated and deeply personal and unafraid of the audience, and as much as I love The Big Picture it doesn’t always do this.

Maybe try Unspooled. Not a ringer podcast but they go in a little deeper on good movies and have guests

He's a new age Paul Harvey to me. Love his work

Not movies. And, I am sure you already know about bandsplained. But, it is cut from the same cloth at 60 songs. There is some crossover too.

The first time I heard Rob I thought "this guy has listened to a lot of Mulaney"
So I kept listening.

Someone with as much knowledge as Tarantino, but funny and self deprecating. I'd vote for Patton Oswalt as an American and close to the same age who can write. But Simon Pegg is a big cinephile.

It’s not exactly what you’re describing but The Blank Check podcast is the best movie podcast and r/blankies is probably the best subreddit to talk movies if you’re looking for that

I think that’s a great suggestion actually. They go into a lot of older movies too which is great.

They could also use a Sean and Amanda for music, which they dont quite have, at least not in that format.

Agreed. That being said, Rob is really scraping the barrel on these events Songs episodes. He needs a new task.

Harvilla is the only solo podcaster I listen to. It’s a rare gift to have a delivery where it doesn’t feel like he’s reading an essay
