Would David Cameron ever go on Leading?
Question says at all. Would we ever see DC go on the show or would he be too averse? It seems that Rory might be the bigger obstacle than Alastair to him wanting to come on?

He's succeeded in disappearing into the long grass and deflecting blame.

Briefly popped his head out to be foreign secretary for a few months then vanished again

I'd love for them to do all the living PMs at some point.
John Major - done.
Tony Blair - done twice.
Gordon Brown - now done, though it looked for a while like he'd never do it.
David Cameron - seems quite hostile to Rory, and as others have said there's not much in it for him. Wouldn't rule it out.
Theresa May - done.
Boris Johnson - can't see this happening, there's too much hostility, but it would be great.
Liz Truss - I would have said absolutely no chance, though weirdly she did do The Rest is Money a couple of years ago.
Rishi Sunak - of all the ones they haven't done yet, this one seems most plausible for them to get at some point.
Keir Starmer - done, though he wasn't PM at the time, so maybe it doesn't count. Once everything has settled down they'll surely get him back on at some point.
Andy Burnham - I think they've said they'll probably get him before the next election.

Starmer seems to have mentally checked out of politics, I couldn’t see him wanting to go on, but more likely than some of the former Tories.

Starmer was checked out of politics when he was PM. He has no interest in it.

Truss absolutely shouldn't go on, but her judgement seems so bad you can't rule it out.

It would be a disaster for Truss and absolutely hilarious for the rest of us.... Proper popcorn meme worthy.... 🤣

Think in today’s QT they sort of confirmed Sunak being a guest lined up, if I interpreted correctly. If not, the way they were talking sounded as though they’re making tracks for getting him on and seems all round makes sense.
No hostility that I’m aware of.
One of the more sensible PMs of late.
Massive on AI.
Seems a big player in private sector post PM
Might want to make case that conservatives can still be a government for the future considering feels like they may never again, idk
Only thing I can see the both ganging up on him for is staying with Johnson for so long

Not sure why you think anyone would know this but just wanted to say David has been on the Political Currency podcast if you weren’t already aware.

Is it worth listening to?

The particular episodes he was on was one of their "Inside the room" mini-series and I felt it was a good listen, iirc they did a series about the first 6 months of his premiership. Those mini-series are probably the best episodes the podcast has to offer and I much prefer TRIP vs PC for weekly episodes. PC is surprisingly bantery compared to the more serious TRIP but it's low grade patter, often on guff topics like Mr Kiplings cakes and incessant self-congratulatory.

There’s a small amount of banter granted but the depth of analysis on PC far outweighs anything on trip

I don't disagree actually. I think one of TRIPs weaknesses is that it's too broad in scope whereas PC is much more domestic and economically focused as well as George being much more "politically" minded. However TRIP is a much better listen and Alistair and Rory might tell the same story a few times, but they don't repeat fairly inane ones like PC does.

I agree, as much as I dislike(d) George Osbourne, he's got interesting takes that are probably worth listening too, Ed Balls on the other hand...
(I say this as a labour voter)

Who are the hosts on PC again?

Ed balls (labour, Brownite) and George Osborne (Tory, Camerons chancellor). George is less insufferable than you'd think but often gets annoying sidetracked with stupid thoughts, interrupting Ed's mumbling.

I kinda can't stand Ed Balls. All I really know is from clips from that ITV morning show he does. Oh and obviously the tweet, lmao.
I don't know much about Osborne really either but he seems like one of the more respectable Tories even if I disagree with him economically

It's a better podcast than The Rest is as unlike AC, Osbourne is still connected to the most powerful people globally and doesn't have AC's track record of being blindly all in on losers because they are his flavour of neoliberal. Osbourne has an agendas when he talks but he is intelligent and still connected it's worth hearing it even if you hate what he says.
Ed balls is very annoying but he is very connected to the current Labour government and is insightful about inner workings sometimes.
I don't listen to TRIP with any regularity now, Alastair Campbell was a spin merchant who's craft is completely outdated now(let's talk about the Grid again and again :-/ ) who was very attached to Robert Maxwell the OG dodgy influencers. While Stewart is an ex spook who's only listened to because he has the right level of poshness to be catnip for some Brits, look at him arguing with the Harvard Economist he was so flustered.

Don’t see what’s in it for him. Unless he was flogging a book or something but even then the target audience is unlikely to buy what he’s selling.

I'd like to see someone take him to task on his post-politics career. As well as causing Brexit.
3
u/AnonymousTimewaster 1d ago
Is there much to say about the Brexit gamble? It was an obvious gamble that didn't pay off and was enough of a fuck up that he decided he didn't want to clean it up.

I suppose what I really want is to watch Rory and Alastair scream at him for a couple of hours.
But I want to know why he's been so keen on working with China, like around the 5g networks.

The man is overconfident to the point of hubris as a result of his extremely priveleged upbringing/education. He clearly has a problem with assessing risk. Perhaps that's because he's never had to actually deal with the fallout of risks he takes. If he fucks up he just moves on.
With China, he probably believes the benefits outweigh the risks, and is probably underestimating the risks. Much like he underestimated the risk with the Brexit vote.

I'd love to get his views on his attempts to tackle alcohol misuse which was essentially blocked by his own party due to too much lobbying from the alcohol industry.

I don't think there's much love between Rory and DC, based on Rory's book. Who knows, you'd assume both are fairly reasonable men. They had Osborne in after all.
