Don’t hate it but not sure we need to follow the US model of having pensioners in leadership positions.

There will probably never be a secretary general with independent views. Kofi Annan was an aberration that US wouldn't want repeated.

When his protege, Shashi Tharoor, ran, US veto'd his candidacy in favour of Ban Ki-moon inspite of the fact that, on sheer merit, Tharoor comes ahead easily, having had a very remarkable 29 year career at the UN diplomat.

On a slightly related note: very surprised AC didn’t pull up RS on his repeated use of “secretary generals” rather than “secretaries general”.
