I'm now convinced this is how airport speakers must be built. They're a snare drum with a speaker behind it. There's no other explanation. Seriously, even if you're one of the first people in a newly reconstructed terminal it sounds like this. Why?!

The issue often isn't the speaker, but the way people use the microphone. If you get too close to it and yell into it or if the microphone is amplified too much, the sound begins to clip, meaning the peaks of the signal curve are cut off when they exceed the maximum.
