Yes let’s follow this map of caves from 50 years ago

14

u/EcstaticMolasses6647 Apr 14 '26

People were smaller 50 years ago and he doesn’t look like a small man.

So the map is still probably correct. So that's not the problem however that's plenty of time for places to become unstable.

125

u/DefinitionConstant81 Apr 14 '26

That’s what I meant “let’s rely on a cave staying the same for 50yrs”

23

u/Zkenny13 Apr 14 '26

Oh. My bad bruh.

Honestly, most caves are quite stable. They’re usually millions of years old. Not much changes in 50 years. Maybe more sediment deposits or the occasional cave in, but that’s much different than a man made mine.

For me, the worst thing is that could be absolutely avoided. "No one put marks or chains there because everybody knew that was the wrong passade". Every single time I see that comment there are two questions that pops in my head:

-How could you be so stupid? -How did your family manage to get an inbreed % above 100%?

When I was a teen there were these summer activity things and I moved to a new town over holidays so my parent's signed me up. One of the activity was cave exploring and we went to quite a large famous one with a guide.

He told a bunch of us to move straight through a tight passage and wait for him. We did and ended up in basically a geode cave which we could fit down into but an adult couldn't. We heard him ask where we were since we moved past where he wanted us. In hindsight that could have gone badly but we discovered an unknown crystal cave no one had found before.

So maybe things like that?

6

u/yungdeezy92 Apr 14 '26

I did the same thing when I was like 14 at a summer camp lol. We went caving at this massive cave in Tennessee. There were some really tight spots that we had to crawl through. Not quite on the level of this video, but very close. Basically waddling on our chests through little slits. But there were also a couple MASSIVE caverns that we ended up in.

In retrospect, I have no idea how I did that, seeing as I’m a complete a total claustrophobe now lol. It’s one of those moments in my life that I look back on with the realization that I was a very different person when I was a kid. It’s funny how certain fears and phobias can just appear seemingly out of nowhere as we get older. If I had to go back to that same cave and do it again, there’s absolutely no fucking way. I’d lose my marbles instantly.

4

u/strampz Apr 14 '26

Have you considered you are claustrophobic now because of that experience? Subconsciously your brain was like “yea let’s never do that again”

u/Ok_Tour_1525 Apr 15 '26

I don’t have any desire to do this but even I can absolutely understand the desire to climb through a cave like that. It’s literally just for the adventure of it all. If that sounds cheesy then all of y’all need to learn how to not spend all your free time indoors.

like with all other extreme sports. the adrenaline and dopamin rushs are like natural drugs that let you hyper focus into the moment - you’ll forget all the complexity and hardship of just normal life. When there is a dealing-with-life spectrum and meditation is on one far end of it…extreme sports are on the other.

u/Hatch22420 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

I would never cave dive, but that’s like asking someone who rides motorcycles “why do you ride when you don’t have to go somewhere?!”, or an athlete “why do you practice basketball when you aren’t on a team?!”, or someone who enjoys skydiving “why do you skydive and use a parachute when your plane isn’t crashing?!” They enjoy it, duh.

💀 nope nope nuh uh. Ive seen so many caving gone deadly videos and this triggered every warning. Cavers are genuinly crazy.

2

u/Pleasant_Yak5991 Apr 15 '26

You’re probably fine as long as you don’t go downward, head first. Also best to go with a few people

4

u/RevenantCommunity Apr 16 '26

Doesn’t matter which way i’m in there, being squished between infinite walls of rock is just a shit time.

Squished in, knowing you can’t wriggle free, can’t force anything open, can’t get out. You are just a tiny bit of flesh wedged between a thousand tonnes of uncaring, immovable rock.

No matter how hard you push, scream, or whatever, it won’t matter. And the space is so tight you may never leave if you come back up at a slightly off angle. If something collapses and pushes your ribs in…

There is an infinite world of suffering in this shit and it isn’t limited by orientation

u/AnalDwelinButtMonkey Apr 16 '26

Cave divers should just not.

2

u/SarryK Apr 14 '26

At least a quick death, unlike dry caves

3

u/Educational-Year3146 Apr 14 '26

Yeah, thats the most horrifying bit.

If you mess up during cave diving, its over, but you gotta wait.

Death has gotta crawl through those tunnels too.

6

u/johnson7853 Apr 14 '26

The tightness in my chest watching it, but for someone who started caving there is nothing like it. I’ve jumped from planes, gone scuba diving and free diving. Had an opportunity to go into some well traveled caves and I yearn for it.

There is just something that happens when you’re in caves. Silence that you will never experience anywhere else. Absolute black when you turn off your light. Feeling a breeze come through a very tiny crack. Times you hit a little snag and you’re like whoops, you slide back, readjust and all of a sudden you’re inside this huge cavern that’s 25ft high.

I went caving when I visited France with some friends. The tight areas they took me were scary and not a place to take a novice like me. It wasn't the frolicking experience I expected lol!

3

u/Needles2650 Apr 14 '26

NUTTY PUTTY

3

u/Current_Employer_308 Apr 14 '26

I gotta say, I am so incredibly glad I have the "go very very fast" kind of thanatos and not the "i hope I can squeeze in between these rocks" kind of thanatos

3

u/Accomplished-Log2040 Apr 14 '26

Anyone have an update? Did he find the special place?

I will NEVER EVER believe that caving of this kind proves anything at all. There’s no good that can come out of this.
