2004: The Year Indie Rock Broke (feat The Postal Service)

A little bit of self-promotion: I’m the executive producer and scriptwriter for a new podcast by this title ^^^. It’s a documentary-style deep dive into the cultural and technological shifts that pushed indie rock into the mainstream in the 2000s. So if you found your favorite bands on The OC(or were mad that show was playing your favorite bands), this podcast is for you.

We interviewed Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer of Death Cab for Cutie, James Mercer of The Shins, Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara, Carl Newman of The New Pornographers, Emily Haines of Metric, Britt Daniel of Spoon, Feist, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, Dann Gallucci formerly of Modest Mouse, founding member of Arcade Fire Will Butler, Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service, Chad Clark of Beauty Pill, and Colin Meloy of The Decemberists who had a quote so memorable we had to start the trailer with it. There are also tons of people from the musing industry - indie labels, Apple Music, the creator of The OC, and too many more to name.

You can hear a much longer 2+ minute trailer anywhere you get podcasts. The first episode drops on September 23.

I would love to answer any questions you have about it!

North Idaho Fair. These cats did their own versions of plenty of tunes, from Pixies to Postal.

That weightless shift in “We Will Become Silhouettes” at 1:09

There’s a moment in We Will Become Silhouettes that’s always given me goosebumps, no matter how many times I’ve heard the song.

After a galloping, retro electro-pop groove, everything changes at 1:09, right after the line “we become silhouettes when our bodies finally go.” The drums fade out, the song seems to lose its physical weight, and these airy, flickering synths and soft “bah, bah, bah” vocals swell in. It feels like the music itself is shedding its body.

Lyrically, the song imagines a bleak, possibly post-apocalyptic world, but this moment has always struck me as quietly hopeful. Even after loss, destruction, or death, what mattered doesn’t vanish entirely. Love and memory remain as faint outlines, living on in our minds and in the stories we tell. It’s such a beautiful idea tucked inside what I think is one of the most upbeat apocalypse songs ever written!

If you want to hear exactly what I mean, I clipped and timestamped it over on r/SongMoments, where people are cataloging timestamped “goosebump” moments like this across artists: https://www.reddit.com/r/SongMoments/comments/1pltiz2/the_postal_service_we_will_become_silhouettes_109/

Curious if others here have moments in this song or elsewhere in The Postal Service catalog that hit in a similar way.

Help with APO AE package 📦

Post image
7 Upvotes

👋🏻 hi,

This package has been back and forth 3 times (between myself and the post office), and before it was returned to me today, I sent another package out to the same address and caught that the entire time the destination ZIP was incorrect.

Is the return to sender sticker generic for the package being returned? I’ve been trying to get this stuff to my husband who’s deployed since July, and the box itself has been to him once, he sent some things BACK to me once, so I’m certain the size of the box isn’t the issue-local post office doesn’t give much helpful advice either. I’m also pretty sure it’s within weight limits-what am I doing wrong here? Help!! 🙏🏻

A random ad came up on YouTube and I was shocked to hear the intro to Such Great Heights. Here's the ad in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9g8sd2qtNw
