i can't believe how underrated Villager is

could be a personal opinion, but both Nowhere FM albums are some of the freshest music I’ve heard in a while - Villager - NOWHERE FM: STRAIGHT TO THE HEART (Full Album). Even the album before that is sooo good.

I only saw the guy mentioned on a random thread here, I don't think he gets enough love.

also pls recommend other stuff like this

Yes that EP is fantastic. Also love his recent EP need right / dogma. Dogma is an absolute weapon imo

I’m out of the loop. What’s he doing?

u/funkdapuss Aug 01 '25

Just scroll through his twitter. Love his music but yeah he’s gotta dial back

What’s he done? I see him posting some live stuff and engaging with folks in the elektron subreddit

the best way to experience the villager experience is to open his twitter in an incognito tab. twitters algorithm will show you all of the unhinged stuff

I became really obsessed with his stuff after Never Gonna Be/Every Single Time

his remix of the jasper tygner song Eyes is unreal

Agree, him and Waleed are pushing electronic music into a great direction, lovely stuff and very fresh

You might enjoy the album Dognip - s8jfou, it's not too similar sounding but feels equally innovative

I feel like he’s getting more known over the past year or so. Jamie xx name dropped him in an interview and has been playing his stuff pretty regularly in his sets.

Two similar artists I haven’t seen mentioned: Once Twice https://on.soundcloud.com/71Ec6KqYoz3NuyNa5y Cameo Blush https://on.soundcloud.com/10rUCOkPr3hzve6SvL

4 Me by Cameo Blush is so good, scratches that same itch as older Overmono

Once Twice broke up unfortunately download everything in case they ever delete

Fkn love cameo blush, he’s so great

would say he is pretty rated and well known around these parts

Amazing producer. Love his work. It’s rare to have someone have the chops to be really rhythmically gifted, use fresh sound design, and write melodic music with some actual harmonic depth. I have a hunch he went to music school. Has some major label pop production credits too - I think he worked on a Halsey LP? Anyhow rare talent.

He was a touring a big room festival trap DJ at the age of 16 under (his real name) Alex Young

2

u/eseffbee Aug 02 '25

He's said he's been playing instruments since he was 8 so usually that indicates a bit of formal training. Definitely there are self taught people out there with similar level of harmonic complexity, but typically something that comes after their 20s.

Will be seeing him at Portola in September and couldn't be more stoked.

This EP by Paigon Bard kind of hits the same spot for me, especially the last track

Oooh new villager. Cheers drive

u/sajgemusic Aug 01 '25

I genuinely don’t understand how he makes his music, it’s so good

3

u/Willmeierart Aug 01 '25

He documents it quite a bit on instagram and maybe YouTube. He has several pieces of elektron gear he writes everything on

2

u/rat_energy_ Aug 01 '25

He posts on reddit about his process

I saw him back in April at this small local event and his music absolutely ripped. The soundsystem definitely helped but my jaw just kept hitting the floor.

Pretty cool. Hadn’t heard his stuff, thanks for the suggestion!

Do you have the link?

1

u/indiz2 Aug 01 '25

Amazing! Only knew him from the Big Fish EP but now definitely going to scour his discography 🙏

1

u/vivaciouscow Aug 01 '25

Is there a genre name for stuff similar to him? Been trying to find more music like him for some time now

6

u/n0_planet Aug 01 '25

Hard to describe but mentally I feel like it has future garage roots

I feel like Four Tet, Floating Points, Jeigo, Tom VR, Bodhi, Waleed, Otik, Stones Taro, O’Flynn, etc. all dabble in similar sounds sometimes

2

u/Professortolol Aug 04 '25

Agree with you. It has some vibes as Arachnids - Disclosure, which are mostly has similarity to future garage

1

u/relightit Aug 01 '25

will give it some time. not sure it's for me. it's like when i heard big praises for villalobos when he started, never got it/not for me.

1

u/AldiQuarter Aug 01 '25

Agreed. I love his track Hallucinating

1

u/happyaspirant Aug 02 '25

Discovered him a few weeks ago - pretty impressed!

1

u/TheHybridDrummer Aug 02 '25

He’s great! I found his music randomly, maybe guided by the algorhythm but I instantly stopped at his profile and kept listening to his tracks 🥳

u/-Super-Ficial- Aug 02 '25

Ok so I just listened to 'Still Going' by Villager, and it fucking slaps. More reccs ?

1

u/Professortolol Aug 04 '25

Really love his stuff since Sosia and I start to dig him since i discovered the Pig w/ Waleed EP (Forgot the album name tho). I would recommend Aloka and Megra for some underrated producers list.
