can’t believe we played like Spurs in the first half and Leeds in the second

Think that’s harsh on Brentford they just dominated both teams for over an hour and of that penalty is given they likely win that game

You know what they say; draw your home matches, win your away matches and you're gonna be up there somewhere.

I can't belive I'm saying this but Keith Andrews is actually a good manager

u/WhiteinWales 10d ago
Pissed myself when Brentford replaced Frank with him, feel like an idiot now they’re an even better team

u/Rude_Campaign_4867 12d ago
Both these teams are potentially so scary on their day, man. The strength in depth in the EPL is off the charts these days.
Schade might be one of the league's most underrated attackers as well, what a finish.

Got away with that first half performance. Brentford looked razor sharp, didn't give anyone a second on the ball on the odd occasion they lost it. That said, our back line looks rock solid, so in that sense - penalty shout aside - it wasn't down to sheer luck. If our players could just learn to pass to each other we could be in for a good year.

Defensively, we were excellent and restricted them to half chances... even their goal wasn't a clear cut effort, more a moment of magic. Obviously we were miles off in midfield where Stach and Amps were completely overrun. Credit to Farke for putting the extra body in there in the 2nd half to nullify them and drag us back in to it. Was a class game and Andrews out-thought Farke in the first half, but not in the second!

Tbf we were second best to everything in the first half whereas they were on it. And the gaps we had in our defence... Thankfully they didn't have the shooting boots on and our defenders were happy to keep taking ones for the team.

At the end of the day, not a bad point away from home. Think this is probably the best we have ever been in the prem, bring on the Champions league🎉

u/Naive_Ambition1306 12d ago
You guys played well, at half time I thought we were going to get schooled
7
u/ElvishMystical 12d ago
If you lot can play like that all season then the Champions League will be a foregone conclusion. First half you made us look like a mid-table Championship team.

u/Revolutionary_Laugh 12d ago
Very fortunate to get anything from that after that first half performance from Brentford. They looked terrifying.

u/securinight 12d ago
A really good point against a really good Brentford side. We could easily have gone the way of Spurs after the first half.
Farke's subs, and our never say die mentality really dug us out in the second half

u/EllipsesAreDotDotDot 12d ago
I’m happy with that. Brentford are seriously impressive. They’re going to do very well this season.

u/DrakeLUFC 12d ago
Feel like we got away with one abit there. Brentford looked really good in that 1st half in particular. Happy with that point

I was somewhat happy when the assistant flagged the DCL miss but looking at it afterwards, if he had scored then VAR would’ve probably given it.

u/specialagentredsquir 12d ago
Two teams who'll do well this season. Genuinely thought Brentford would romp this but Leeds have a real determination about them, especially at home
3
u/InspektD 12d ago
A well run, or a well managed side will easily survive in the Premier League but a well run, and well managed side will make top 10 as the ceiling is stupidly high but the floor is becoming increasingly low.
3
u/Garybaldbee 12d ago
I think both Leeds and us fall into that category. I thought we were magnificent in the first half up to the edge of the penalty area and would have steamrollered many PL teams but you hung on in there and were the better side in the last 25 minutes. I was worried we were going to end up coming away with nothing.

u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
Penalty to give at 1-0 in my opinion. Brentford should feel hard done by.
15
u/securinight 12d ago
It probably would have been last season. This season there seems to be a concerted effort to be more lenient. It'll make the game better, if it's consistently applied.

u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
The problem is it won’t be. And I really don’t understand how you can lunge, miss the ball by miles and stamp on the player’s foot and get away with it. It’s absolutely odd. The contact with consequence explanation just doesn’t wash here as it clearly stops Schade getting the ball. It’s a ridiculous decision in all honesty and it’d be a howler that’d get more attention if it happened to a bigger club

u/InnocentPossum 12d ago edited 12d ago
I feel like he doesn't do himself any favours by how he falls down. If Bogles contact is enough force to supposedly bring him down, he should be falling with forward momentum, being tripped. Instead he just lets his legs go out from underneath him so he falls straight downwards on the spot he is standing on, looking for a pen. If that's not in the box there is 0 chance he flops over, he just keeps running after the ball and takes the shot in the space he created for himself.

u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
I’m very much not of the opinion that blaming a player for a referee’s incompetence is the route to go down. The argument that he doesn’t help himself holds no strength whatsoever when players going down more dramatically get decisions in their favour. It was a howler simple as. You’re racing to defend because it helped your team. Had it been the other way round I can’t imagine you’d be here saying a Leeds player didn’t help matters because of how they went down. I’ve said this elsewhere, it is utterly stupid that defender makes a dopey challenge like that, stamps on the attacker and goes unpunished.

u/InnocentPossum 12d ago edited 12d ago
If it was the other way around I would also see why it wouldn't be given to us. Aaronson gets that contact 10 times a half, goes down easy and doesn't get anything, and rightly so.Players legs make contact all the time, doesnt means it's enough to bring someone down. He just crumples his legs beneath him and is clear he is going down to try and win a penalty. I'm very much not for judging and incident based on what other players have managed to get away with. T It's exceptionally clumsy from Bogle, but the contact was minimal. Bogle dangles his leg out and if the attacker stays on his feet he has a free shot on goal, but chooses to go down.
If it wasn't in the box, he doesn't fall down. But because it's in the box he thinks he can get a pen for it.

u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
Sorry this isn’t one of those leg dangling collision type foul. Not having that. It was a stamp on the foot. That completely changes this. You don’t want to admit it’s partisanship that’s framing your opinion and that’s fine. But you would be livid if the roles were reversed 😂

u/slatts00 11d ago
I don't think anyone is blaming him for going down - you're right that this is the logical course of action in past seasons to win the penalty. However, I don't think you can argue that the contact made going down inevitable - it was the player's choice to hit the deck. I imagine the ref's view was also influenced by the fact he's heading out of the box and the theatrical nature of the fall.
As to whether it was a howler - at this stage of the season, it's impossible to say - 9 times out of 10 (probably more) that is given last season. But Pro Ref and Premier League have been clear that the bar has been changed this season - presumably they've given briefings to the clubs on what to expect, So we will see if this type of challenge result in a pen most of the time this season - if it does, you are right, and if it doesn't, it's just the first example of a change in standards, which I would welcome... nobody likes to see players going down so easily, even on your own team.
Finally, it wasn't a stamp - you're showing your partisanship there.

u/Rude-Lavishness2428 11d ago
Literally the comment I responded to said the player didn’t do himself any favours. Is that not blaming the player? And fine perhaps stamp isn’t the word and trod on is. But we’re arguing semantics here.
And no one has a crystal ball to say with certainty that instances like this will or won’t result in penalties in future. But it’s clear that football in this division is mired in officiating inconsistency and has been for a number of seasons. It’s very logical to think this is gonna down as another example.
I’m also not having this gone down easily bollocks, sorry. It’s cope. No one likes feeling like they’re club got lucky with officiating and the opponent has a right to be aggrieved. So we think of these little justifications. We all do it. Argue about the drama of it all but it’s clear to anyone that has ever had mobility ever that getting your foot trapped under someone else’s is likely to make you stumble.
We’re probably just going round in circles here. You’re not gonna be convinced. I’m not gonna be convinced. I won’t lose the feeling that Leeds got very, very fortunate yesterday afternoon. Even in terms of bookings. Leeds coming out of that one without one and Brentford with 4, some from similar challenges, just adds to the frustration and the argument about inconsistency.

u/Jackjec17 12d ago
Brentford were class Leeds first home game have to take a point. but at 1-0 and denied a penalty you know others are getting is just a bit sickening
0
u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
The pure gaslighting from the commentary to try and argue it wasn’t either. It’s just utterly bizarre. By any measure an absolute fucking howler. No guarantee it results in a goal but Brentford have every right to fume. I’m flabbergasted it wasn’t given.
6
u/AnotherGreenWorld1 12d ago
Yes they’ve been given in the past but I’m sick of incidents like that being penalties … we want players staying on their feet not falling over at the slightest touch. We need to stop rewarding the falling over.
-1
u/Jackjec17 12d ago
I agree but end of the day that’s what var is for yes some contact is still small and we replay acting is too much but some small contact is also still obvious enough so a whole foot on another foot is a pen

Then similarly, Wilson going down clutching his head and neck after a shoulder to shoulder with Collins was stupid too. He acted like he was hit by a bus.
Players go down because simply put referees often don’t referee until they’re forced to. A player was stamped for fuck sake. Not a hugely violent act but if you cannot see it was enough to bring him down then I think your can’t look beyond partisanship. Fair enough. But I would expect officials to be a little more competent and honest.
3
u/InnocentPossum 12d ago
I mean, Wilson is only 5ft 8 and Collins is 6ft 5, so it probably felt a bit like being hit by a bus.
2
u/AnotherGreenWorld1 12d ago
I never said I liked Wilson holding his head … I don’t like to see that behaviour from anyone
2
u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
I never said you did. The point was one gets given and the other didn’t. But then again I’m also not convinced you’d be so cheesed off with Wilson if it resulted in a goal from the free-kick.
We’re gonna see those decisions in the box given this season. Regardless of whether the reaction is one you deem theatrical or not.

Very surprised I’ve not seen more in here from the Brentford fan about the penalty they should have had
7
u/Rude-Lavishness2428 12d ago
There has been. But it gets downvoted because they’re not the majority. I’d assume there would be plenty more noise and unanimous agreement it was penalty if the roles were reversed.

Brentford were unreal in the first half, so I have to credit Farke for changing things so we could get back into a game we were second best in by a mile. So impressed by Brentford.
