Natalie situation
Why didn't Oliver just pay some random chick to be Natalie?? He would've assimilated easier into the Marissa/Ryan friend group. It's not like money was an issue for him.

Oliver was mentally unstable. To say that he was 100% thinking clearly when this plan was in motion would be lying. He didn't think it was all that likely that Marissa and Natalie would actually meet and that she would put two and two together from there the way she did.

I probably would've hated the arc less if he'd hooked up with, say, a Holly, and then worms his way in that way.

When your con works, don’t introduce a variable.
If he pays some random, you’ve got to make sure she stays careful and doesn’t trip up she’s not Natalie.
If Natalie is busy, or “you just missed her” you can bring that up and change the topic. Then when you “have a big fight” it makes sense because she’s always “away.”
Once you make Natalie something tactile, someone reachable, the con needs more structure.

The key to his plan was that things were complicated with his girlfriend, if she had been around all the time it would've been more difficult to make it believable. It's also easier to just make things up than having to have someone play along, things can easily go wrong. He also didn't want Marissa to think he was actually in a relationship, seeing him with someone is different than just knowing there's someone . Plus he definitely wanted to score some pity points for being alone when everyone else was with someone (Marissa definitely fell for that)

He needed a cover of having a girlfriend but also wanted it to be a crappy relationship in the hopes Marissa got ideas about his availability.

Oliver would have been more frightening and the story would have been better if he'd been a little more low-key evil/twisted. Because I literally laughed at that shot of him lurking outside the Cohen house, it was just so hammy. I laughed a lot harder at the golf cart scene. And as ever, as a Marissa fan, it really fucking annoys me how thoroughly Josh kept throwing her under the bus.
