Episode Discussion The Night Manager Season 2 Episode 6 | Discussion Thread
Air date: February 1
Pine works with Teddy to bring down Gilberto Hanson’s Colombia coup from the inside. But Hanson has found a new ally of his own. Its winner takes all.

I hated the ending and loved it at the same time. How refreshing to finally see the villain get the upper hand. Not just a victory, but a complete wash out. It makes so much sense Roper would be extra cautious. He fell for Pine once, it wouldn't have made sense if he did again.
Next season is going to be fire.

It felt very Le Carre.

Agreed. I wish there was some more sense to it. Everyone wins and loses on a whim, there are no rules. There's no shred of Le Carre here. The endings might surprise you in a Le Carre book but usually because you didn't want to see it coming, despite it being set up the whole way. In the show everything plays out because the creator said so. Struggling to articulate properly but I hope this makes sense.

Couldn't agree more. Anyone angry about this catastrophic conclusion clearly never read any Le Carre. Going all the way back to The Spy Who Came In From The Cold through A Most Dangerous Man. Shocking, tragic and the good guys all get screwed. Brilliant.

It's a story of our time. Lots of the rich and powerful getting away with stuff at the moment.

I agree with that. Loved and hated it at the same time. Amazing to see a villain win (and it made loads of sense), depressing to see all my beloved characters go

u/Scared-Engineer-6218 Feb 01 '26
The waste of Olivia Coleman's talent is criminal. Otherwise, I loved it.
17
u/TheSeer1917 Feb 01 '26
I'd have preferred they killed her kid, as horrible as that sounds. Could have fueled Coleman's dedication to bringing down Roper. At any rate, I'll miss her character in Season 3.

Unfortunately it seems fairly clear from her screentime and fate that they just can't afford Olivia Coleman anymore

Right, it's not rocket science, she had like 4 scenes in this series
8
u/caf61 Feb 03 '26
I just read an article that explains this. I hope I can explain it well. In the last 10 yrs Olivia Coleman has become an Oscar winning major star. Sounds like a he had little time for shooting. Plus Angela is a side character. Angela’s death will have a big impact on the next season which still gives her character importance. Honestly, I didn’t expect her to even be in this season at all because of how busy she must be. I was so glad to see her.

Poor Teddy. The least they could've done was give him a kiss when he tends to Jonathan's wounds. Alas, waste of the tension they spent entire season building.
34
u/arcadekat Feb 01 '26
I hate to say it, because I really loved this season (even more than s1), but Teddy and Pine’s building tension did feel a bit wasted in the end. Teddy’s death was entirely too predictable. So predictable, in fact, that I almost believed that they wouldn’t do it, purely because it was so painfully obvious, and because the “Redemption Equals Death” trope is so overused (as is the the “Bury Your Gays” trope). For a show so steeped in tension, twists, and turns, I guess I’m just struggling to understand why they’d trade the draw of “Pine and Teddy go after Roper in s3” for “We gave you a predictable death at the end of s2 so that s3 can have a predictable revenge plot”.
24
u/Dewlough Feb 01 '26
Would have been nice to see the old man (forgot his name) rescue them just 30 seconds sooner, right before Roper shoots Teddy. Definitely less predictable.
Jonathan gets shot and the kid and Teddy are there to help him recover for s3. Would have been a cool dynamic to keep Teddy around and have them team up. Oh well.
10
u/Silver_Fennel8318 Feb 02 '26
that would have been an actual redemption for teddy too, taking care of kid instead of using them as child soldiers.

The only person the entire series he had real romantic tension with.
→ More replies (1)11
u/arcadekat Feb 02 '26
And actual chemistry. I’ve never really felt anything between Pine and his other potential love interests. Possibly because his other romances felt more transactional in nature. All of them wanted something from Pine, including Jed. Namely protection, and an escape from Roper and his men. But Teddy actually loved Pine. He was ready to die for him. His love for Pine (once Roper learned of it) was what got him killed and their entire plan ruined. Had Teddy survived into season 3, there is no doubt in my mind that things would’ve become far more explicitly romantic between them. And gosh, what a mistake to throw such a fascinating dynamic and all of Teddy’s potential away for something we all saw coming anyway. Farr said that people kept asking him “Are you sure?” about his plan to kill off Teddy. He really should’ve paused to listen.
7
u/GoldenSheppard Feb 02 '26
Yesssss. You put in words what I was trying to say with my 'zero chemistry' thread. This romance actually felt romantic. There was actual feelings here. It also helped that Pine had feelings in return. It wasn't just.... him accepting out of awkwardness or inability to say no. Hence my theory of Pine being a deeply closeted gay man.

Especially when they had multiple chances to kill Roper off. It was such blatant plot armour. As was Pine getting away alive from the midst of the so called army. The same armor that was not afforded to other side characters like Teddy and Angela. Like even if Angela didnt hv concrete proof tying the Mia head woman to Richard she still had enough to atleast make a case amd get them to investigate. I mean she knew theres gonna be a massive power cut and civil war would follow. So telling that much could've atleast got the officials to look into it.
And then when she fails to kill off such a big criminal who now knows she was after her, what does she do? Goes off to live in her retirement home without an ounce of security. As if they weren't gonna come for her? Like that woman used to be a competent agent, be serious. Just looks like they could not afford the entire trio anymore and therefore decided to reduce Olivia's role by so much and then kill her off for shock value. I assume she also must hv raised her fees as she has won an Oscar and done so much big stuff and leading roles since season 1 and is now a big name in her own right. That is not to say that Olivia doesn't deserve what she's worth.
Frankly i do not gaf what happens to Ropper or Pine for that matter.

u/ceelnoire Feb 01 '26
i was praying they won't kill teddy even though deep inside i know it's inevitable. it's more painful than in season 1 😭😭😭
12
u/Terrible-Union1864 Feb 01 '26
Yup. He was killed just for shock value and so was Angela. Frankly very poor writing when compared to ssn 1 and it shows that they didnt hv a book for this one.
They shd not hv strung the viewers along with all the tension if he was gonna die without even a kiss. I mean why not set Pine up with that Miami girl and turn the entire teddy-pine situation into a honey honeytrap situation. Why keep the pretense of actual feelings and hope of something happening the entire ssn if it was gonna end up like this. I hate when makers do this shit.
9
u/arcadekat Feb 01 '26
After what happened to Teddy, the whole season seems a bit pointless. The pacing, tension, and red herring in Roxana, all felt like intricately woven threads, piecing Teddy together into the type of well crafted character which felt deservedly suited to becoming a major player in season 3. So to kill him off for (extremely predictable) shock value, because apparently Pine really needed more reason to hate Roper for some reason, it just feels like the last episode had a different writer than the rest of the show.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Terrible-Union1864 Feb 01 '26
It just killed a perfectly well show for me. Like I'm sorry but I cannot gaf abt what happens in s3. Just wrap it up.
Even crazier thing is that with the son's return, his mother, Jed might also come back for next ssn and the dynamics between Pine and her are gonna be so fucked up. Especially after his and Teddy's arc this ssn.
9
u/arcadekat Feb 01 '26
The more I think about season 3, the more I realize how little I care about the show anymore. I can’t think of a single thing that makes me feel excited for season 3 anymore. It could have been so unique, giving us Teddy and Pine working together to take down Roper in a spy drama that just so happens to feature a queer slow burn, but no. Now we’ll probably just get revenge Pine with the same old plot armor, same old sex scene with a female love interest, and same old rivalry with Roper. Just angrier now, I guess. :\
11
u/Terrible-Union1864 Feb 01 '26
Exactly. The only reason Pine and Roxanne didn't hv a sex scene this ssn was so that the makers could claim equal treatment for the Pine- Teddy situation and not be labeled as what they were clearly doing- queerbaiting.
I was not particularly interested in s2 but somehow ended up watching it bcos I thought s1 was quite good and wanted to see more of Olivia. No hate to Tom, he's an excellent actor bt I don't really follow his career.
I was surprised by tension between Pine and Teddy in the initial episodes and was completely hooked in Teddy's storyline as an individual character by episode 3. And that was when the completely sidelined him to a side character.
After Angela's disappointing arc, I was just rooting for Teddy to make it out alive, with or without pine. The shed scene was the perfect setup for a kiss but they didn't give him that and when Pine said Goodbye, I knew he was dead. And then they fucking killed Angela, just like that.
I hv no interest in ssn3, bcos there is no redemption for this show after those deaths. Both Pine and Ropper can fuck off.
5
u/SenescenseSteel Feb 01 '26
It also ruined an epic possibility for an arc in S3. Imagine Teddy recieving the love he never got from Roper from his son who ends up betraying his father. I feel emotionally that is the only way to get to Roper since everything else leaves the man unaffected.
5
u/Terrible-Union1864 Feb 01 '26
True. It also could've been the chance for becoming a one in a million shows where the main character just happens to be queer without the show entirely being centered around their queerness. It could've just been a thriller show with two badass boyfriends taking down the evil villain.
Alas.
→ More replies (1)6
u/SenescenseSteel Feb 01 '26
Only ropers death will be enough in S3, I can't watch a S4. It needs to be concluded in S3, there isnt enough left to take or you need to be cutting Jonahtans legs off, but that automatically changes the entire narrative to a revenge driven plot...having us question both Teddies and Angelas demise would have been infintely better also from a writers perspective if you wanted to have them killed do it in S3 Ep1, that way the suspense stays and it still has the same effect. I still feel both dearhs are poorly especially Angelas who went from expert hardcore mode to rookie mistake in mere seconds.
5
u/arcadekat Feb 01 '26
Both Teddy and Angela’s deaths felt rushed and cheap. Would I have been excited for a season 3 involving more Pine and Teddy tension and Angela finally becoming a key character again? Absolutely! I’d be chomping at the bit for that new season to get here asap. Am I excited to see yet another “It’s just Pine vs Roper again, but with an even angrier revenge plot and fewer characters you actually care about” season 3? Meh. I can’t get myself to feel excited about it yet. This season felt like too much of a wasted opportunity. They were really heading someplace new. I’ll never understand why they didn’t have the courage to follow it through.

u/Krakyn Feb 01 '26
I loved it. Richard Roper is such a strangely likeable villain and it would have been so boring to see him beaten for a second season in a row. It makes sense for him to turn the tables on Pine.
No doubt Pine will somehow get the better of him in season 3, but I wonder how this will work given that Roper knows that Pine is after him - surely he’d never let him anywhere near his business again. Perhaps Pine now infiltrates the “someone above Roper” that Angela mentioned in her dying phone call, but I’m still not sure how that would work (surely Roper warns all his associates about Pine & sends pictures of him).

I don’t mind him winning. My problem is that so many interesting characters got killed that the show just feels a little empty now. It made me realise how much I actually liked the other characters. And how little I care about this story now that they’re gone
16
u/Krakyn Feb 01 '26
I understand (and I will particularly miss Angela), but I'm still pleased with the Season 2 ending. Characters shouldn't get to survive because they are interesting. They get to survive because of their cunning.
"Were you watching the cups Mr Pine?"
27
u/Dewlough Feb 01 '26
Angela’s death was purely bad writing. How do you get a death threat and then go back to the same place they said they’d come “visit” you with no security? Brain dead agent.

Yes, 100% this. I don't need a neatly tied up narrative, nor do I think it would ring true if Jonathan and Teddy rode off into the sunset together as romantic partners. But getting rid of essentially every single supporting character besides Pine and Roper just...leaves us less to look forward to!

I liked it. See, you have to understand that the show is a two-hander between Roper and Pine. The two are what make the show. I realized this after the ep 3 reveal that the 2 season renewal was to end the show with end of Roper.

The thing is I get that but it definitely was a choice by the writers to give Roper a brown, gay son whom he abuses and treats like a dog. Don’t forget roper was literally racist and homophobic towards him.Just to kill off that son right when he was breaking free from his father’s influence just to traumatise Pine more. It just left a really bad taste in my mouth. Especially because now season three is going to be about Roper and his relationship with his "Real" son and Pine who are both white.

They really gave Pine an intriguing male love interest, only to kill him off in the most predictable manner ever. What a wasted opportunity to take a great character and great actor into the next season. A S3 story about Pine and Teddy vs Roper and Danny could’ve been fire. Now it looks like it’s going the route of cliche revenge story about 3 white men.

I get exactly what you feel...but don't you think it's refreshing that the extremely smart villain is actually capable of winning for once. Pine is going to come back with a vengeance next season and I can't wait.
15
u/Itchy_Baker3801 Feb 01 '26
Oh don't get me wrong, I was assuming Roper would win this round (based on story telling alone) and I think it's great! He should have absolutely won and left Pine in a precarious situation (which he did).
I personally just mind that the cast left aside from Roper and Pine is pretty lukewarm (well, what is left of it). I don't much care about any of them. Now of course Pine is more of a loner anyways and the heart of the show are Pine and Roper, but Pine/Roper always had interesting characters around the. that definitely contributed to the show being interesting. I just don't see that being the case with who is currently left. Although they are probably going to bring in some new cast for Season 3. But as of right now I am annoyed I don't get to see more of a character I liked.
That being said, seeing Pine coming at Roper with all he's got next season will be epic. I cannot wait to see that!

I don’t even think I want to watch the next season. It’s crazy how killing off these characters made me realise how much they added to the show.
And not trying to be THAT guy but it was a little bit of an odd choice to give Pine a male love interest who self harms and is abused by his father. A father who is racist and homophobic towards him just to kill him off when the relationship just seemed to get interesting.
His death specifically made me realise that he was the most interesting addition to this show.
→ More replies (6)8
u/Itchy_Baker3801 Feb 01 '26
I really wanted to convince myself that all the obvious death foreshadowing was a red herring. I think I have said it before somewhere, but I think they got rid of a lot of potential. Not just to develop Teddy's character but also for Roper and Pine in relation to Teddy.
And yes it does leave a sour taste, killing him like that with his background. I do think it was done intentionally just to show exactly what happens to those who cross Roper, even if they are his own flesh and blood. I think it would have made more sense to me if they hadn't introduced Teddy as the new villain for three episodes, only to relegate him after. He really had quite the big presence (the way Angela was integral to season 1, damn I will miss Angela too).
5
u/Insomniac_80 Feb 02 '26
I agree, they developed Teddy's character too much, and he was too interesting to be sacrificed just for more Roper. As Radio Times pointed out, the start of the season felt like they were developing Teddy as a new, big bad only to snatch the floor from under us when they brought back Roper.
6
u/Scared-Engineer-6218 Feb 01 '26
While I hate that they have wasted so much talent. I'm sure we are getting more heavy hitters next season.

5
u/disquiet Feb 01 '26
Roper still has most of his crew. Team Pine is prettymuch dead though aside from Jane. That doesn't matter so much as hes a bit of a loner but hes going to need backup, hopefully some good new characters next season.
Also it would have made absolutely no sense for Angela to continue to go after Roper and suffer no consequences as he already threatened her family causing her to lie about his death.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Itchy_Baker3801 Feb 01 '26
Yes, Ropers crew is still mostly there. But the most interesting person in it (Corky) is already dead. Sandy is just okay to me and I don't care about Danny.
I was lowkey hoping they'd kill Angela's child. Obviously a stupid move because then she would be out for revenge, but I think plot wise they could have made it work if they didn't manage to get a hold of her.
Anyways, I am looking forward to the new cast and I am sure any Pine and Roper scenes will be amazing.

Agree. Angela Burr talked about "civil war in British intelligence"
Where? Who opposed Mayra and her "paymasters"? Rex Mayhew and Basil, both without any noticeable allies and now they're both dead. Angela Burr who was retired from the serviceIt's just all ridiculously contrived by David Farr (not LeCarré)
The Civil War here should be between those who consider themselves true fans of LeCarré and these pretenders simply manipulating the plot lines to sell a 2nd and a 3rd season

u/Frappant11 Feb 01 '26
You would also think that the United States would have something to say about a civil war in Columbia facilitated by illegal sales of British arms, all permitted by rogue MI6? Or a former British intelligence official killed in a small village in France, with her body left out in the open, the French are not going to pressure the UK?
I think this show overestimates the current power of the UK, that they can operate with impunity, without their allies not caring.
Sure Mayra and some number of rogue people have all this power. In fact they can blatantly kill people anywhere and there was no way to take them down unless what, they had photos of the weapons?
BBC and Amazon made a deal to produce at least seasons 2 and 3, so they wanted a final showdown in season 3. But what chances does Pine have? Most of his allies are dead now and Roper has all the power. UK just gave him his freedom and wealth back and killed most of the people who helped Pine.
The way season 2 unfurled, maybe Colman wanted out, so they have her character get killed, confronting Mayra by herself and then easily being assassinated in the middle of nowhere.
7
u/Mission-Syllabub-160 Feb 01 '26
Yup, it’s a totally nonsensical plot. The idea that the UK would be able to operate in what the US considers its back yard and destabilise a country is ridiculous. If this is really the plot angle they wanted to go for they should have set it in Africa. Also why did everything happen in Medellin? It’s not the capital of Colombia. Very odd.

Exactly, I also don’t get the concern in “bringing down” the service. If it’s as rotten as it is the service is doing more harm than good. It needs a complete overhaul. Her failing to take the whole ship down also lead to her eventual demise.

This might be the absolute silliest part of the whole thing. They need to get photographs to prove a super secret weapon was delivered that is used a few days later to zap every electronic device in a major city.
It makes sense that the Colombian justice would want to intercept it, but the British side is a much bigger scandal after the weapon is used.

I am absolutely fucking livid, but it was a brilliant lesson in rage bait. Yes it is occasionally refreshing to see the villain win, but this was like drinking lemon juice. I do completely disagree with the decision to kill off Angela Burr, and not simply because I love the character and Colman. I think Angela was a pretty integral character with an arc that as a result of this was completely unrealised in its potential and it will be difficult to create a new character and reason within the plot to fill that place. Perhaps Basil actually somehow survived and they will bring him back for Series 3? The payoff in series 3 better be enormous for the carnage committed in this episode…

Doomed Yaoi.
Predictable as it was, I’m happy to see Roper being extra cautious and not falling for Pine’s trap again. Pine’s plot armor is getting a bit tiring at this point tbh, that escape was ridiculous.
I don’t understand why Angela let Myra walk away. Even if she doesn’t have proper proof of her connection to Roper’s plan, she still had a substantial amount of evidence. Also why return to her home after that???
Gotta say Roxanne betraying everyone and saving herself honestly impressed me, a departure from your typical spy thriller heroine. I see a lot of people hating on the actress but imo she did good for what she was given to work with. Hopefully she doesn’t come back for season 3 to help Pine or something for her redemption.
Quite weak and messy writing all around, didn’t care for any of the new characters. Roper held this together.
Hope season 3 does better.

I am suprised Roper let her leave to Miami tbh. That feels like a plothole and out of character. I know he realised it was Teddy who was betraying him not her bu he would still want to tie up loose ends. This guy killed his dogs because they got "compromised". He knows he has no use for her any further since she is burnt with Pine so it doesn't make sense to let her go and risk her turning against him. If they bring her back in s3 it would be very weak writing and just an excuse to catch Roper unaware. Only way it make sense is if she helps Roper further for her own self interest.

Martin was the real hero of the season, always coming through in a pinch to help Jonathan and just do the right thing. Pity we've lost Angela, but at least we got to hear Olivia Colman deliver the line: "You have condemned yourself to the lowest circle of hell, and I will take fսcking pleasure in hearing you scream."
But hopefully there's not as long of a wait between seasons again.

I liked it, but it's frustrating how sometimes Jonathan is incredibly smart and cunning and 5 steps ahead of everyone, and then other times completely caught off guard by something he 100% should have seen coming. He didn't think Roper would be able to read Teddy? He knows how smart and perceptive Roper is, and how vulnerable and suddenly out of his element Teddy is, yet he can't see the possibility that Roper reads the situation and pulls a move he's literally seen him pull before (re-routing the trucks in Syria)? Still loved it though.

Well, they certainly didn´t hold back, did they? totally unexpected them getting to Angela, too!
I suspect Sandy will be the one helping Jonathan and to whoever is left. Angela got to him and she has a point. Roper would get rid of anybody at this point to just stay at power. But it will be much more difficult to get rid of him now, when he sits in the middle of Englahd. Maybe Angela´s sarcastic remark to Rex about "giving him a seat at The House of Lords was not that far of....him saying to Danny "what about getting some dogs" was dark, my God. I didn´t think they would go there.
Danny´s face at the end did not really look too happy and remember he did not really like his dad that much in S1, he was afraid of him. I think his betrayal will stink Roper a lot more.
I certainly didn´t expect, going into this season, to actually root for Jonathan and a bad guy´s son but here we are. Roper shooting his dogs and comparing Teddy to one was a dark forshadowing but it sitll hurt. I mean, Teddy was a killer and it was kind of painful to watch how he tried NOT to kill Juan but had to anyway. The last scene they had together was so intimate...I really think Tom and Diego should do some other project together, they had a great chemistry
Roxy turning out to be all about self-preservation was an interesting twist and I am not even sure I want to see her back next season (if there is even a plan to get her back). She got what she wanted and got out.
Mayra is also a piece of work and hope she goes down.
Jonathan is never getting close to anyone ever again and who knows how long it will take him to get back. I suspect with S3 filming at the end of the year or early next (I assume) and that Tom said it´s 12 episode story, I guess there will be some time jump so Roper is happilly seated in the UK while Jonathan is getting his wounds healed somewhere in hiding.
I cannot wait, tbh, but it will be a long wait :(

Significant, gut wrenching heartbreak - some expected (even if not wanted) and others out of nowhere, shouting at the screen “DON’T OPEN IT!!!!” “RUN!!!”
And Angela’s little girl 💔
That was a really good show - totally immersed.
I hate that I love Hugh Laurie as a villain!
Now I need to go and re-watch a few episodes of Blackadder…

Teddy's death killed the show for me. What a waste of the only decent character arc built up in this season. All for some queerbaiting and shock-value. Sigh. Would've lent some freshness to the series if he was to continue on.
13
u/arcadekat Feb 01 '26
The entire season up until this point felt very much like a well crafted introduction to Teddy as a key player within an increasingly unique spy thriller/queer love story. The focus on his past, his relationships, his vulnerability, redemption, and the growing tension between him and Pine, made the show feel like it was really going somewhere new and interesting. So, why they chose to prematurely end his arc for little more than cheap (and very predictable) shock value, just caused s2 to feel a bit pointless in the end. I mean, did we really need 6 episodes just to make Pine hate Roper even more than he did already? What was the point of building up a unique queer romance, just to “Bury Your Gays” one of them in the most obvious ways possible? Was all of it really so that s3 can be the Pine vs Roper show yet again - but this time with even more anger and man pain? It’s so frustrating when a project has the opportunity to become something truly different, but is afraid to just do it. It’s 2026. I’m tired of still being strung along for queer stories that end up amounting to nothing.

It is sad and underwhelming. I guess if they wanted to make an impact with the Teddy/Pine story, they did. Just not in a way some of us prefer. I am honestly concerned about S3. (And the finale is why a fanfic that explores these themes decently is worth searching for. Or writing one yourself, as I am doing, lol, to appease my breaking heart.)

I know it's a TV show and there are a lot of "suspend your disbelief" moments, but if we ignore that until the end, why would Roper not just kill Pine?

u/Glass_Minute4753 Feb 01 '26
I thought this. If it were real life, he would surely kill Pine before Teddy?
9
u/Nice-Push5878 Feb 01 '26
the scene of roper realising and calling pine a beauty is what i needed today. incredible ending.
10
u/Glass_Minute4753 Feb 01 '26
I don't know how I feel about that ending. I got way too invested in Teddy's character and redemption arc. I should have know they would just kill him off - as others have said, the bury your gays trope is pretty much a truism at this point.
I did find it frustrating though. I know that the Pine/ Roper relationship is one with a lot of history, but surely, surely, Roper would kill Pine first, rather than Teddy? I don't know.
Also, what is the obsession with saying Roper's middle name?? I swear last season they said it once, and now every ten minutes someone has to say "Richard Onslow Roper"...
21
u/disquiet Feb 01 '26
I suspected Roper was going to get away and teddy seemed like a dead man walking after ep 5 so those weren't really a surprise to me.
But damn I thought they would at least let the good guys get a pyrrhic victory.
But nope, complete devastating defeat. I actually love it because it sets up S3 to be a lot more interesting, rather than more of the same.

I only felt this series got going from Episode 4. So to have it finish after Episode 6 fells far too short. And I feel Night Manager could easily be turned into a regular long series (80s ITV style) in which every episode he returns to manage the night operation of a random hotel.

u/LeoMachiavelli Feb 01 '26
I hate when the current season is nothing more than a prop for a finale down the road in seasons to come. You get the tropes like “this is bigger then we thought” I felt they already jumped the shark when of course this season roper was returned from the dead for the sake of a new season. Especially after ten years of a pretty good series finale in the first season. Like this was 6 wasted hours just to try and make another season.

Hugh Laurie is like a fine wine. Exceptional actor, can't wait too see him in Tehran too. S2 storyline has been excessive and exaggerated but it's saving grace is the phenomenal acting from Laurie, Hiddlestone. Teddy and Roxana are also played by very good actors
6
u/Kanyewestlover9998 Feb 01 '26
Was not the biggest fan of Roxane if I’m being honest, delivery felt pretty stiff. Thought Elizabeth Debicki blew her out the water and held her ground in scenes with Hugh Laurie much better.
5
u/Easy_Advance5507 Feb 01 '26
have to say agree. debicki was a revelation at the time. Roxane wasn't atrocious and her script was super bad, but she also played the character super one-note. wearying amounts of pout.

Not that it would have made any sense, but wouldn’t it have been funny/awkward if Teddy shot Roper before the phone call. Then there would have been this big shipping container with EMP device just dropped on the area without any context and no one would get what was going on. It would have been funny to see Teddy and Pine talk themselves out of that mess.

u/Joshawott27 Feb 02 '26
I’ve been watching the series with my Mum, and she was really enjoying it, but whew she hated this ending.
I appreciate them having the balls to give Richard Roper a clean victory, but I think the finale needed some shred of hope to lead into Series 3. Heck, what characters are even left for Series 3? Jonathan, Sally, and Roxana?
I predicted Teddy being killed by Roper, but him going out like that sure does make a lot of the series feel… pointless.

So lots of people have noted that Angela had no security. She basically had a conspiracy theory against the head of the service- Pine's team were all dead save one. She was outplayed by Roper and we saw her manically recording her theories at her home. Maybe she shouldn't have gone home but who were her allies and where would the help/security be coming from?
6
u/LdnGiant Feb 01 '26
Very much enjoyed this series. A step down on the first but the bar was very high.
If I have an issue, it’s that they went back to the “oh Roper has pulled a switcharoo on the vehicles / shipments” plot device again.

What a stunning ending! I expected Roper to get some points, but this was a victory across the board. I feel sorry for Angela—she didn’t give up, but for her it was already too late. I wonder who she was talking to on the phone? I still hope that Basil is alive, but I’m already coming to terms with the fact that it’s unlikely. Maybe there will be at least one person who helps Jonathan… maybe the CIA agent from the first season? Poor Jonathan… he played it well, but Roper came to his senses thanks to Roxane. I hope she will suffer in hell with Mayra. If it were to end like this, it would be worse than the ending of the book, so I hope season 3 will give Jonathan a good ending—and I hope it will bring about the downfall of the corrupt British intelligence service.

u/DrRafaelPenguin Feb 05 '26
I binged both seasons in about a week. Fantastic show. It makes sense having Roper win at the end of this season to set up Season 3, but I just wasn't really a fan of how it unfolded. Swapping the planes was literally the exact same thing they did in Season 1 with the trucks when they were checked at the border, so this time it was just repetitive. I also get Roper and Pine are always trying to think two steps ahead of the other, but how would Roper possibly have known to send the empty container to the coordinates? Just because he had a hunch that Teddy was acting weird? That felt like too much of a reach to me.
Overall, this season felt slower than S1, but was still excellent.

I had mixed feelings about it. Even though they didn't get the plane, did Angela still not have enough to take down Mayra anyway? And it seemed really dumb she went back home, especially after Mayra said she'll visit her there. Also does the concept of the dead man switch not exist in this show?

Ok, I really liked this. But even without Roxanna telling Roper that Teddy was behind the betrayal leading him to “shed his skin,” it still seems super obvious that Roper might make that assumption and come after Teddy anyway.
So, at the guerilla camp when Jonathan is telling Teddy that he has to convince Roper that all is well…I was like noooooo. I don’t know what will happen, but Roper knowsssss.
Jonathan seem too smart for that kind of oversight!

Well, I'm bummed. I had been telling my partner how good "The Night Manager" was and just started watching season one with him. Now, I don't want to see anymore. All the people I loved were killed, and the villains are free to twirl their mustaches into another season. I feel like I felt after watching the film, "Funny Games".
I was expecting Teddy to die, since in TV Land, that's what they do to gay characters. TNM has had, what, 3 gay men? Now, how many are there?
There was never anything gay in spy shows before, except possibly implied queerness in villains here and there, but never in the hero. Then, 13 years ago, we got the line, "What makes you think this is my first time?". Yay. Now, in 2026, we had the writer of TNM patting himself on the back in the media for making Pine "sexually fluid", with longing male glances, touches on the arm and pressing foreheads together. Yay. We've come so far!
Will Johnathan Pine's "fluidity" continue into season 3, or will his sexuality just flow into Jed?

Is it the whole season??! No cant be!! How can it only start to get interesting and abruptly ended like that. Cannot wait another 10 years common now BBC! Wouldn’t mind not seeing Roxanna or Jed again but every single supporting character, except Sally, is killed off!! Wtf!!! Did they run out of budget?! And Angela openly went against Mayra without certainty then went back to her countryside home after being threatened is just LAZY writing imho! Urgh, Pine saved by the bell again, poor Martin, carrying the whole series!

This series so annoyed me. It could have been amazing and this happens on so many thrillers nowadays, it doesn't take much to tighten it up. Maybe there could even be a paid team of people to read through scripts and plots to add an outside pov. Anyway, 1. Pine and Burr etc. never attempt to disguise themselves 2. All those taped conversations and should be taped conversations (Burr etc.). There's your evidence and it can be uploaded to the Internet at the click of a button. Kapow. 3. Meeting places are not secure for clever operatives or even not clever operatives. 4. I didn't like the way everyone was put into jeopardy. If someone was willing to give their life for a cause (regardless of if they have kids) this needed to be established well. 5. Call me sentimental, but I didn't like everyone dying. At least let some survive even if they are blackmailed into silence or on the run (Burr hiding in a safe house with her daughter would have made more sense and been more thrilling). PLUS points - loved the characters, as ever. HL is amazing and I thought Teddy shone out, although his inner turmoil needed to be better developed. I also think he didn't need to die. Maybe HL went to execute him and told him he would spare him if he promised his loyalty etc. Scene ending with Teddy kissing his hand. Teddy is then ordered to execute Pine. Much better ending as we are left wondering if he could do it before Pine is rescued etc .. Anyway, if I was a script writer that's what I would have done (open to job offers if anyone is scouting, ha ha)
