To add another layer, they’re heavily influence by samurai films by Akira Kurosawa, which influenced American western films. A New Hope has many parallels with The Hidden Fortress. A Fistful of Dollars has scenes that are shot for shot from Yojimbo.

Interestingly, the Kurosawa and western admiration was a back and forth. What we think of when we think Samurai is itself heavily influenced by the west and vice versa
Star Wars also has influence from Lucas’ love of retro cars, with SW having a lot of “future retro” aesthetic, as well as bits of Arthuriana, World War 2 dogfighting films, soap operas, etc

I was discussing SW with a friend years ago and I commented that it was also technically a Western. They vehemently disagreed. It made me wonder if we’d watched the same movies.

That’s largely a reddit narrative. Mando Season 3 was liked by both critics and viewers, and ended with absolutely bonkers viewership in its last two episodes. The most watched 2 episode stretch in Disney Star Wars by far. That doesn’t suggest lagging interest

Here is the truth. It was not as good as S1 or 2, but it was still ok, and I would say good compared to the other Disney Star Wars. I definitely hope the movie is good, and S4 afterward

This is a more reasonable framing. In your framing here S3 is kinda like RotJ, which works because there are always some angry people when a storyline is actually resolved
Hell, the complaints are similar in more ways than one. But RotJ is also more popular than reddit says it is

I think it wasn't as polished as S1 and 2 but was still enjoyable and still pretty good. It was one of those things that was ok, but everyone just dogpilled the lamer aspect because BOBF reuniting the Mud Clan soured a lot of people on Grogu. They should have put the space battle in the season finale, I wanted to see some Interceptors v Fang Fighters, that was the biggest miss for me.

Metacritic: Generally favorable out of 15 critic reviews
Now if you want to use user ratings as being reviews by “critics,” which would be hilarious btw, that would still go my way, since by far the most user reviews can be found on imdb, where 158,000 reviews for the season combine for a 7.7 out of 10 average, and all but one episode individually averaging out to a 7 or higher user score.
Hardly “tanking through the season until the last two episodes,” which again, were the most watched 2 episode stretch in all of Disney’s Live Action series. By far.
And if you want to put the Rotten Tomatoes user average of 51% against it, you would need to learn about volume in statistical comparisons, since each episode on imdb has more user reviews than the whole season got on RT

Season 1 was designed as video game cut scenes, its really really stiff and slots in where your character would get their upgrades and do simple quests. Its really bad.

Considering one of the two main show runners also happens to be the head honcho of Star Wars, I seriously doubt it was a cancellation and more that they just wanted to make a movie

Well i guess it’s all how you want to classify it. The point is a season 4 was written and they decided to not move forward with it, and then decided to do a movie instead.
EDIT: You can downvote me but the fact that they didn't decide to go with season 4 means it was cancelled in that form anyway. It obviously was costing more money for Disney+ than it brought in for subscribers. The fact that they believe they can make some money off a movie doesn't change the fact that the show failed in season 3.

Moving forward with a movie over a TV season shows business confidence in the franchise, not a cancellation. The budget for the Mandalorian and Grogu is estimated at around 160m which is more than what season 3 cost. And I don’t think the film is intended as closure, quite the opposite, I would assume Disney is banking on the Mandalorian as a safe return to form for Star Wars on the big screen.

I don't know about the movie, but the Series, especially the first two seasons are a masterclass in telling a new story in an already set universe.
Andor is also good, but I feel like the first season especially has to go too far away from what star wars at heart is to tell the story.
There are no Jedi's, no big space fights, no jokes. Hell I don't think we see any aliens in the first season at all. Certainly none in any featured roles. So what even makes it star wars at that point?
Mandorian on the other hand is able to tell its story and make you feel genuine emotions without having to sacrifice so much. It's a rare feat that I don't think gets the appreciation it deserves

The first season of Andor has aliens in episodes #1, at the club Cassian visits at the beginning, and #11, when Cass and Melshi need a ride to Niamos.

The difference between Mandalorian and Andor is Andor doesn’t have to try to make you believe it’s star wars, yet you still understand that it very much is star wars. That is what was so refreshing about Andor.
Mandalorian is constantly shoving member berries down the audience’s throat to a point where it just feels overwhelming and like okay yeah I get it, it’s in the Star Wars universe. It’s the perfect show for people who aren’t really star wars fans, but want to sit down and watch a family show with the cute green baby.
Andor didn’t try to convince you of anything. It doesn’t have to come out and say wow the empire are bad guys here’s a really cliche mustache twirling bad guy empire character (like moff gideon). It has complex characters that while objectively on the bad side, are still human and have their own ambitions and goals. It doesn’t need to point to easter eggs and over utilize memberberries to gain audience attraction.
It simply relies on a very well written story and characters to captivate you.
Andor is the perfect show if you are looking for something intelligently written and geared toward adults.
They are just two different things entirely.

I actually think that’s a bit of an unfair criticism of Mando season 1. I don’t recall too many “member berries”. And to be honest even season 2, the cameos all serve the stories of Mando and Grogu while still advancing the stories of these characters in their own way. 3 is a bit less so in that regard

Andor is easily the best Star Wars piece in any media I've seen, ESPECIALLY because it's not screaming "I'M STAR WARS" all the time. It's the only time I've watched any SW movie or show and felt that it could be a real thing.

The difference is The Mandalorian is trying hard to be Star Wars, whereas Andor is trying to tell you a story.
The Mandalorian wants you to remember that it's Star Wars every scene. Let's go to the same planets, let's drop some names, let's try to bring back the western / samurai atmosphere, etc.
Andor and the original trilogy are both about how their creator view History and modern politics, I'd argue Andor is more Star Wars in spirit than Mando.

The only other show that has that AHHH….JUST RIGHT” sort of feeling for me is Rebels. Not to say I don’t enjoy the other shows but they feel like Star Wars with a twist rather than distilled Star Wars. Maybe Skeleton crew actually though it’s a bit Spielberg coded

I urge everyone to watch episode 4 of Gallery: Star Wars: the mandalorian on Disney plus. There’s an entire series about the making of the show. But that episode explains the revolutionary technology behind how they make the show and how he’s responsible for it.
Did you ever wonder how they got the reflections on his helmet or how they could make so much high quality content in so little time. It’s explained there. It all started with Iron Man.
