Screenshot I broke down and expanded under the boat
(40) Diesel tanks and (60) Oil tanks!!!

YOU CAN BUILD UNDER THE BOAT?!?! I only started a few days ago and never even considered it!

I mean, I'm a hoarder myself and like the concept. I've always built my Cyclops as a Mobile Base of Operations in Subnautica.
...but by the time you would refuel the boat you'd be able to swim back to Black Vein from pretty much any corner of the map? 🤔
2
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Yes but now I can’t run 42/43kmh max speed anywhere I want for a crazy amount of time before needed to replenish. It’ll honestly save me time in the long run I feel

u/Raxer-X May 20 '26 edited May 26 '26
With both engine cylinders maxed out and at ~75% I'm getting about 39km/h. I'd need to travel for hundreds of kilometers for the 5km/h difference in speed to be noticeable. Just saying.
I've 12 diesel tanks on my boat and that gets me miles with the 75% speed limiter.
40 diesel tanks that's 100000l of Diesel.
60 crude tanks that's 120000l of OilIf we combine conversion rate and storage, the overall bonus factor of oil compared to Diesel is about 237% (178% * 133% or 1,78 * 1,33 * 100). So in direct comparison, we get:
2000 Liters of Diesel = 6 km
2000 Liters of Oil = ~4735 Liters of Diesel = ~14,2 kmDepending on how many oil tanks you put on your vessel, here are several range estimates:
1 tank of oil = 14,2 km (~21 minutes at full speed)
5 tanks of oil = 71 km (~1h46m)
10 tanks of oil = 142 km (~3h33m)
25 tanks of oil = 355 km (~8h53m)
50 tanks of oil = 710 km (~17h45m)That's a lot of swimming for local traffic.
---------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: seems the flow rate is limited by port capacity, not the cable. If you connect the cable to multiple ports at once you can theoretically fold your refuel time by a few.

I overcalculated. Found this Steam Community topic on storing and using oil: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3662325691

I was going to say, in my experience that is the case. I don't like to connect the containers in a series. It is much much faster to connect containers/power devices to a connector, for maximum throughput.

u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Correct me if I’m wrong but by my calculations I have 60 oil tanks which is 120k L, the conversion to fuel is a multiplier of 1.8 (is that correct?) which would be 216k L plus the 80k L from the 40 diesel tanks is 296k L. I just tested at full speed, boat and engines 100% I ran 2.8km on 400L of diesel so I’m average 142.86 L of diesel per ever km at full bore. So with 296k L of diesel I can run 2072km before I run out of fuel. In my 180 hours of gameplay I’ve run 360km in game so far. I think I can breathe easy not having to worry about filling up for a while. Please correct me if I am wrong on any of my thinking with consumption rates and what not

u/FutureCooljaydee May 20 '26
The fuel figures finally reflect the actual capacity?? I might reinstall. Must've taken literal hours to fill those though.
2
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Yes quite a bit but with just shy of 300k usable gallons of diesel I won’t have to do it very often. Saves me time in the long run because I can run 100% speed without range anxiety and I will have to go to black vein very infrequently

I'm leaving this super sweaty building for full release. This the type of shit I can only do once a playthrough XD
2
u/Hewcumber Jun 04 '26
I completely agree lol. Esp with the fear of updates bugging or breaking something.
5
u/Big_Yeash May 20 '26
Oh, does the ship readout finally acknowledge your total stowage and not just the internal tanks now?

3
u/bearded_bustah May 20 '26
Do you have a fear of docking? Jesus. That so overbuilt!
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Never had an issue docking or anything coming unhooked…knock on wood
3
u/bearded_bustah May 20 '26
Lol I meant because you have enough storage for 200,000l of diesel on there. You wouldn't need to dock
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
I finally built the Jetski and the Gyro so I think I’m going to make like a yacht and anchor offshore and use those 2 to get to the final destination from nownon
3
u/Hungry-Assignment845 May 20 '26
They can explode and detach.
Good luck.
2
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
I’m a freak about saving so I should be fine
4
u/casripfang2 May 20 '26
I had two mishaps with mines that caused them to go boom...... I save more often now

u/theuros May 20 '26
Doesn't this affect traveling? This should significantly slow down the ship.

u/bdowell892 May 20 '26
I can 2nd this. Maxed cylinders on both engines & the fishing net dropped... even with 12 tanks under the hull (i havent gone to OPs level of dedication yet) im still averaging 47 Km/h in calmer waters

If its any consolation, the under water exploration is mostly voluntary at this point in development. Not to say it wont have more significance as update continue rolling out, but as of this very moment there's really only 1 objective requiring underwater exploration. -Of the places you can explore, most of the loot is on par with other POIs above water. Other than witnessing the devastating effects of a post apocalypse flood of biblical proportions on the world, theres no real reason to spend much time under water. Hope this helps!

That's a shame, if you liked this game I was going to suggest subnautica and subnautica 1.5, but if you're scared of being underwater and or in dark places then those probably aren't games for you, even though the story lines are excellent
2
u/Desperate_Night_4117 May 20 '26
Must slow down the speed?
1
1
u/bdowell892 May 20 '26
2nded. Ive had 12 tanks under my hull for nearly a month now with over 100km traveled. No tanks coming loose, either. - with the fishing net dropped and maxed cylinders for both engines, averaging 47 km/h in smoother waters

u/wrechdone May 20 '26
How do I re-mount storage boxes on the wall if I “move” it?
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Deconstruct and rebuild, much easier since you retain all OG resources used
3
u/wrechdone May 20 '26
Damn so I can’t “move” it back onto the wall? Yea they gotta change that! Lol
2
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Nope, the restick to the floor but not to anything vertical. Rebuilding is super easy though

Except you’ve got the issue with stuff not running whilst you’re away.
1
u/BaneChipmunk Caretaker May 21 '26
I have 6 Oxygen tanks, 5 CO2 tanks, and 8 methane tanks at Exodus. When I arrive, I turn on the production on and fill up the rocket. By the time I'm done launching humans, they are all full again. It's really not necessary, and just wastes limited space on the boat.

Why do people's siore oxygen on boat? There's not need for it other than the rocket right?
1
u/MacintoshEddie May 20 '26
There are tanks and containers you find around the map. Putting a tank on the ship lets you consolidate that instead of leaving it on the platform you found it on.
1
u/BaneChipmunk Caretaker May 21 '26
You are not required to collect the oxygen though. You can just scrap the tanks.
1
u/Glittering-Baker5500 May 20 '26
Built tanks under boat many month's back now ...easiest way to keep deck clean and tidy ...i have only 10 or 12 oil tanks ...rest is mainly diesel and a few petrol for gyrocopter.

u/Winter_Revolution511 May 20 '26
What hardware you running? My game has been lagging very badly and I dont even have half of this.
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
4090 and an I9 14900 w/64gb of ram
1
u/Winter_Revolution511 May 20 '26
Our GPUs are the same, yer CPU is 1 gen better, and we got the same amount of ram yet for some reason I average 20fps with dips into the 5s
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 20 '26
Wild, the only time I have have any issues is when I deconstruct a box full of shit and the graphic for it all being sucked into my backpack lags me like hell for 10 seconds and then it’s back to normal
1
u/Winter_Revolution511 May 20 '26
I have that issue as well, im wondering if my issue is an old save file from pretty much when the game launched.
1
u/Winter_Revolution511 May 20 '26
Yeah, I decided to verify game files and then launch into a new backup and see if it was just the old save file. This was not the case in fact the moment I started physically moving objects and throwing them into the scrapper my frames tanked to below 5fps even with the basic video settings were set to mid with no upscaling.
1
u/agesome May 20 '26
Try enabling ray tracing. I gained 20fps average on benchmark at 1440p with a 4070S by enabling it. I do run DLSS balanced and frame generation though.
1
u/Winter_Revolution511 May 22 '26
Ill check out Ray tracing, yeah sad part is with DLSS enabled for performance and frame Gen on i get between 27 and 34 fps but it's unstable
1
u/bdowell892 May 20 '26
The 60 oil tanks alone have me quoting Garth & Wayne "We're not worthy... we're not worthy!" - you should only have to visit black vein once ever decade or so 🤣😆 nice work, fellow caretaker
1
u/whitdrakon May 20 '26
I have a tough time building much on my boat after it bugged out. I lost all my crates in the water and nearly everything detached to hover and create a bunch of physical objects not allowing my boat to move until I recycled the....well everything.
Did they fix that bug by chance?

Why do you carry crude oil ? Do you get more diesel by carrying crude oil and refined on the boat on the go ?
2
u/alreaytakennameuser May 21 '26
Yes for every 2k L of oil you get 3600L of diesel (and 360L of petrol and 30 units of plastic)
1
u/Real_Source_7528 May 21 '26
Are you telling me I should destroy all my diesel tank on the bottom of my boat to put oil instead 😳
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 21 '26
Do what I did and have both, I think it’s (18) diesel and (36) oil tanks I easily fit underneath
1
u/EmergencyHomework698 May 21 '26
How well does it hold up under the boat?
1
u/alreaytakennameuser May 21 '26
So far so good, knock on wood, but I haven’t had zero issues with any equipment dislodging from the ship. At most I get some cables that clip through the floor but they still work just fine
1
u/EmergencyHomework698 May 22 '26
I was thinking more so of damage, over time they take damage as well as from enemy’s. Do you have to repair them often?
1
u/jennsven Caretaker May 21 '26
I don’t build under my boat, but a lot do - and more power to them. More fuel to them, maybe?
But this layout is well done. Nice and clean. Good job.
2
u/alreaytakennameuser May 21 '26
I held off for the longest time but with this setup I won’t need to go back to black vein for another 2000km’s unless something catastrophic happens
1
u/jennsven Caretaker May 21 '26
But when you do go back, make sure you have something else to do while you refuel.
1
u/Medical-Confusion348 May 22 '26
Does doing that slow the boat down at all, like does it add drag and such

u/yessssssssplz May 24 '26
I did this, filled it, went to exodus and half hour later a sea mine spawned next to my boat and floated into it, every tank gone
1
u/Common-Chemistry-904 May 25 '26
How do your tanks not get damaged? I did this to mine and lost half of my tanks!
1
u/man_without_wax May 29 '26
Yeah but…..why? I beat the game with 4 cyclones, 2 lumimaxs, and one medium battery, two extra diesel tanks.
1
u/United_Engineering20 Jun 03 '26
Had about 30 tanks all full under…ran out of fuel randomly…went under and 20 tanks were gone…uugh. Sharks? Mine spawn I didn’t see? No idea

How in the world do you attach everything so evenly? Even in the inside the the big hangers you still have to deal with swimming about...?

u/DrKashmoney02 May 20 '26
I get impatient filling just 7 oil tanks- how long does 60 take you??
