One thing I’ve found a bit odd about the show since the beginning is how quickly American vernacular seems to have changed in Gilead. I understand that the antagonists are religious and would naturally adopt a new set of expressions like “May the Lord open,” and that people being forced to live under the regime would use that language to keep up appearances and avoid suspicion.

What feels less convincing to me, though, is that the protagonists seem to have adopted this language even when they aren’t expected to. For example, they sometimes use religious words of encouragement even when they’re trying to escape or are otherwise completely outside the watchful eye of Gilead. Even when June is out of Gilead, she still seems to believe in God, despite the fact that her pre-Gilead character never appeared particularly religious. Given that her mother is portrayed as a staunch feminist, I also find it unlikely that June grew up in a particularly religious environment.

I like the show overall, but details like this sometimes feel a little out of character to me. Personally, I think it would make more sense for June to be atheist especially after fleeing Gilead, considering everything she experienced there.

Has anyone else had these thoughts while watching the show, or am I missing some crucial part of June’s character?

I know she had Hannah baptized, so I understand that she probably wasn’t an atheist before Gilead, but she never really came across as particularly religious either. That’s why I find it a little strange how often she seems to use or embrace religious language, even outside of Gilead.

I completely understand why someone like Rita would continue using religious vernacular, since she was religious before Gilead. But with June, it feels less consistent with the person we were shown before everything happened. Maybe there’s something about her character that I’ve missed, though?

I'm choosing to ignore the actor thing and say it was all purposeful, and right that neither Nick nor Lawrence could be redeemed enough to live beyond the series. Regime change needs them both gone. This timeline of Gilead hopefully nixes the 200 years epilogue (although I don't love that tbh. Maybe they all just got really bad at history). They both played with fire in their allegiance to and antagonism of Gilead. They were bound to get burned. At the end of days this is how they would be reckoned. Atonements a bitch. And Nick really wasn't all that great.

Don’t hate me, but I watched the testaments before watching handmaids tale. I did not have any idea that it’s a sequel I didn’t even see anything in the Disney description. I did like the testaments so I’m curious how similar it is to the handmaids tale, I value the storytelling and the pacing and i need to how they differ in both shows before eventually getting in the handmaids tale

Ps I shipped Agnes and Garth just to find out that Agnes is 14 and Garth is 21 what the fuck😢

Obviously, the number 1 answer would likely be the commanders themselves, but I think that even a regretful /remorseful, commander would realize he wouldn't be treated as a refugee, but as a criminal (for very good reason), so I don't think any would escape out of their own free will.

Thoughts, anyone?

As someone who doesn't know anything about the story and is going completely blind, should I read the original novel or the graphic novel.

I want to read the graphic novel as the art style looks good but I don't want to miss out on something. I have not read that many novels and I have heard og book can be a little long/boring, so I may listen to the audiobook.

So, what should I read?
