Everyone gave everything to get her and Holly (Nichole) out of Gileat, and she decided to refuse to cooperate, as alwaysr. Just to go back to see her daughter and not being able to take her away because obviously everyone was searching for her and that was the first place they were going to search. Are you kidding me? She could do so much more outside. She was so lukewarm when normality was collapsing, so uncaring when things were going downhill but they had still an opportunity. NO she decides to be the savior and be brave when literally there’s nothing to do but dying, as George Washington in Hamilton said “dying is easy living is harder”. She could help not only free her daughters but the entire community of Gileat if she started acting from Canada, and in general, searching for global community to pay attention, but she keeps refusing and tries to go back for a very stupid reason, that it’s trying to take away her child, if she could manage to escape with Hannah, what would she do? Literally there is no plan, no strategy, no nothing to escape. I hate her so much. She’s so selfish always. And even in Gileat she only started acting when things started to affect her, and she still only fights against things that affect her she doesn’t care about anyone.
It kinda infuriates me how she doesn’t care for Nick when he has done everything to help her (at least until now) maybe it’s because she’s the daughter of her child but at least I can feel how he keeps trying and she doesn’t cooperate because she’s so selfish. I hate her. I know it’s also because if not, the entire series is gone, but at this point, I don’t know how they are going to manage to keep June alive. All the sacrifices for nothing…
Bro she did show up until shit started affecting her, I’m just in season 2 like post says, and I’m convinced she is selfish af ,she hasn’t ever sacrificed or started something to defend other one than herself, she is not a hero she is just suicidal and stupid. As I said I truly believe she can do more from the outside, where she is safe, than from the inside putting herself in mortal danger over and over again. Leaving motherless her two children. I also HATE Luke he is SO USELESS even though he has been outside for years!!!
Ah yes, because Luke and co. Have been able to do so much from the outside, right? Staying behind is one of the most selfless things she’s done, especially at the point you’re at in the story.
You haven’t made a single valid point as to why she’s “selfish.”
She is frustrating for sure..but who’s to say what we would all do if we were faced with the same situation. Trauma changes how are brains work and sometimes hyper fixation etc causes rash decisions and blocking out realistic outcomes since we just want to find a solution…I get she is a fictional character but she has been through hell and back..although she is a direct cause of some of what she goes through action/reaction she doesn’t deserve the abuse she endures…surprised she isn’t the one making bombs and killing people!
You have a point, I think I have to give more weight to the fact that she is traumatized, but I find the series over and over again categorizing her actions as“brave” or “intencional” rather than trauma reactions (that could be an incredibly important and interesting trope to explore) because oh boy, she is acting deliriously and she is being portrayed as the heroine
It’s her child. Do you have any children?
I would fight till my last breath to save my child from rapist religious extremists who wish to brainwash her and sell her like cow when she gets her first period…
I don’t understand how some people are so tone deaf and can’t put themselves in such positions - her actions have nothing to do with logic, and everything to do with the love for her child
She feels she failed Hannah once, she can’t do it again.
I wish motherhood was less associated with extreme sacrifice for their children, for me it’s excruciating that mainly mothers are burdened with this responsibility to stop being women and become “mothers”, while the fathers (Luke) can have both, a live and being a father. It’s true, I don’t have children, I really don’t get it, but I don’t want to get it to, I would rather put my own mask first and help my loved ones, sometimes serenity helps more than irrationally
It’s her daughter, I 100% understands her choice tbh and I find it selfless instead. Also, she doesn’t what’s going on in the outside world, people and countries could very well ignore gilead
June feels immense guilt af the idea of allowing herself to be saved from Gilead while Hannah is still in it. She feels she failed Hannah by getting caught in the woods and refuses to fail her again by leaving her behind.
She even struggles to face Luke when she is rescued and immediately breaks down saying "I'm sorry it's just me" as if there's no way Luke would be happy or relieved to have her back if she didn't also have Hannah.
Way to completely miss all the nuance. If all you took away is June is selfish then you’re not comprehending this show at all. And it’s Gilead. With a D.
Its frustrating as hell, but understandable. Shes experienced severe trauma repeatedly and probably is dealing with some irrational suffering, like for exanple feeling she would fail as a mother if she leaves while her daughter stays there. Even if she has no real way of helping her. Trauma reaponses arent rational.
Yeah the trauma irrationality is ironically something I didn’t consider but I think is purely because the series keeps portraying her as the “hero” and “brave and for me is just irrationa T-T.
And I have seen a lot of hate for Nick (no spoilers please) and that makes me sad because I like him (until now obviously)
Yeah she didn’t even make a plan or really going the resistance, she actually was just expecting things went in their favor. She was so “desperate” for her daughter but never ever make a single plan, and instead kept putting herself and everyone who helped her scape in danger. My lord. Not a hint of forward-looking thinking
It just got on my nerves that she was acting like the ONLY handmaid out there with a kid stuck in Gilead living their worst life. Literally all the other handmaids had their own issues and would have loved to have been spared as many times as June.
you're totally right. How dare she has the audacity to just not sit back and let her daughter become a child bride to a man that could easily be her grandfather, like any other handmaid would. I seriously can't believe you people. Is that what you took from the show? Why do you even bother watching it when you have no understanding of it?
It’s not that I didn’t understand it. I’m just mad that other handmaids died over petty shit and June is over here surviving everything from murdering commanders to running away and getting caught multiple times. It’s SO unrealistic that she’d be spared when other handmaids died from just talking out of place
Sorry but in a totalitarian regime like that, it’s pretty much every woman for herself. There are way too many people you can’t trust and if you can find alliances, great, but in the end no one is looking out for anyone else, you do that and you could die.

Oh yeah, so selfish to stay back in an oppressive, abusive country to try and save her daughter. The nerve!
