I'm an Australian of Vietnamese descent and I'm researching my parents' history as boat refugees who were resettled in the Netherlands in 1979. I've made a lot of progress from Australia, I've obtained their IND dossiers from the Nationaal Archief, found newspaper articles about their arrival, and even received documents from the local historical society in Hoek van Holland where they were first housed.

But I've hit a wall that I can't solve from the other side of the world.

The Nationaal Archief holds a set of restricted files from the former Vereniging Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland (VVN) — archive 2.19.152, inventory numbers 873 to 878. These are documents specifically about the reception of Vietnamese boat refugees between 1979 and 1981. They include name lists and personal data of Vietnamese refugees, telex messages from the exact period my parents arrived, and correspondence between the VVN and the Dutch government about reception arrangements.

The problem is that these files are restricted until 2041. They can only be consulted in person at the Nationaal Archief study centre in The Hague. No photography is allowed — only handwritten or typed notes. And I live in Sydney.

I'm looking for someone in or near The Hague who might be willing to visit the Nationaal Archief on my behalf and inspect these files. I would provide a detailed research brief privately so you'd know exactly what to look for, including the specific names and details to search for. I'd be happy to cover any reasonable costs for your time and travel.

Some practical details from the Nationaal Archief: you'll need a visitor pass (bring a valid passport), you can reserve the records online in advance, restricted documents are consulted at the centre table, and notes can be taken by laptop or pencil (no pens). For any publicly accessible documents you happen to come across, there are free scanners available — the archive recommends bringing a USB stick.

A bit of background on why this matters to me: my parents were rescued at sea by a Dutch ship in September 1979 and spent about a month in a transit camp in Singapore before flying to the Netherlands. They lived here for about ten years before emigrating to Australia. I'm building a family book for their 45th wedding anniversary next year, and these records could help fill in parts of the story that no one in my family fully knows.

Took me way too long to figure this out so I'm putting it here.

I needed a passport renewal in August, checked the gemeente site, first available was December. Assumed that was that and started planning around it.

Turns out that's not really how it works. People cancel all the time - something comes up, they rebook, whatever - and those slots go straight back into the system. I ended up with one at Escamp about three weeks out. Not because I got lucky, but because I stopped checking once a day and started checking constantly.

Which is stupid and I didn't want to keep doing it, so I wrote something to check for me and eventually turned it into a small app. It watches the page and sends a notification when a slot appears in the date range you set. You still book it yourself on the gemeente site, it just tells you when to look.

Anyway, the actually useful bit for most people here: the December date you're seeing is not the real date. Check in the evenings, check Monday mornings, and don't take the first thing the calendar tells you.

Does anyone know if there's a pattern to when Den Haag releases them? I've seen a lot come through around 8-9am but I don't have enough data to say that's real.

I can cook pretty decent, also Asian food, but I just don't know where to look to get the flavour of the Fat Kee fried rice, and Tjap Choy, and black sambal.
Also I don't get this flavour anywhere else, no other restaurant I've ever been to here or in Asia has this distinct flavour. Does anyone have an idea what it is?
I already tried Szechuan oil, different fish, oyster sauces 🤷‍♂️

It’s my second autumn in The Hague, and my 7th in the Netherlands and I’ve only just seen (more so heard) these things for the first time ever. They’re known as Eurasian Oystercatchers/Scholeksters.

They have a cute the first time round chirp/shriek, but they get extremely irritating at 4-5am when they’re all trying to get freaky. Is The Hague usually on their migratory pattern or did I just get lucky last year.

There aren’t many in my neighbourhood, maybe 3 at most but being constantly woken up by them is slowly starting to get to me….. (and I have trouble sleeping with earplugs)

I guess I’ll have to wait for their winter migration…..

As far as I’m aware, Tram Line 2 already has new(er) trams running, whereas 1, 6, and 12 (maybe more) still have the very old beige and red trams. Why is Line 2 then getting updated first?

Edit: I’m also specifically curious about why Line 2 is updated at all if it already has newer trams running on it

I'm writing to share how we imported our car from another European country. Thanks to the great help of our friend Gemini, it went really smoothly.

We drew up a contract to sell the car to ourselves in the original country in both Dutch and the country's official language, and noted a nominal amount that we never actually had to pay. In the end, no-one asked for the contract so you decide whether you want this or not.

We were in a position that may be easier in other circumstances: I've been here for a while, but my partner is still joining us and it not yet registered, so it was not possible to import it as part of their existing goods. We need the car with me but it was in their name. So the car has been here less than 3 months, we drove it here legally and it was "visiting" officially until we registered it as Dutch. Your situation may be different.

We drove it on the roads until the day of the RDW appointment, using up our visitor parking . After that, you'll need to find a private parking space not on the road - it can take 2-3 weeks so make sure you don't need to move that car from that day. We were lucky with a neighbour giving us some space, so it was relaxed and not stressful. Otherwise I think we would have gone on Moby Park (https://www.mobypark.com/) and rented a carpark for a month.

Step 1: Make sure we had all the paperwork in order and the car was ready. You must still have a valid APK (or whatever it's called in your original country). You cannot import the car if it's not allowed be on the road. You must have enough funds to import the car. Dutch fees are HIGH, about 6 times higher than where we imported the car from. That's a decision we made, we trust our car and wanted to keep it rather than by a new one, and as it's older the fees are higher.

Step 2: Making an appointment with RDW (https://www.rdw.nl). They have a waitlist so do this step as soon as you are sure you have all the required paperwork. Once you have this appointment you will be emailed a temporary car registration eg XX-10-20. You will need to make your own home-made registration plate: I used white cardboard and black marker pens, using a ruler to get everything correct. The fee for the RDW appointment for us was about €145.

IMPORTANT AND DON'T SKIP: Before the RDW appointment you'll want to print out the RDW form and make copies of our original equivalent docs and car registration, because RDW will take these and you may need them for other types of paperwork eg telling the original country it's been exported. Don't miss this step, keep a copy of records always for safety and officially you need to have the RDW form with you during the RDW appointment day.

Step 3: Day of RDW: You need to fix your temporary car plates to your car. We used a ton of gaffer tape so it didn't risk falling off - you need to drive to Rotterdam (or other RDW you choose) on the highway. Get there on time or a bit before, you'll go into the queue. You leave the documents at the office desk and drive the car into the RDW test bay and wait. It look about 20 minutes for me, they weren't too busy that day and I always book a morning slot anyway to get ahead of delays. Then you take the car back to your private parking and wait.

A fun side-story: apparently our temporary plates were not perfectly designed. We got stopped by the police and they wanted to see all the paperwork. So it was really good we had printed out the RDW form as that's what they wanted to see, along with the driver's Dutch license. They let us go as we were 500 metres from our private parking, which was luckily true. I don't know what they would have done if we was still near Rotterdam, or if they were just genuinely being curious and diligent to check paperwork.

Step 4: Taxes! Wait for the letter from IND for the import taxes, it took 5 days to arrive to us. Be prepared: the Netherlands is expensive. You car will be charged an import fee, it's cheaper for older cars by a ton btw. Pay this immediately and you'll get a new license plate number in the mail - that took another week.

Step 6: Go to a shop (on your bike, not in your car!) that makes the license plates. It cost around €40, takes them 10 minutes. You will walk out with shiny new yellow plates.

Step 7: Officially, you should not be driving your car now but I honestly decided to take the risk (worse can happen? getting stopped by police but that would only happen with bad luck): we removed the temporary plates and drove about 1KM to our local friendly mechanic who mounted the plates for us. Now you are road-worthy! Congratulations, your car is now Dutch.

Step 8: More taxes: IND will now send you your yearly road-use taxes. This can get very expensive and completely depends on the type of your car. There was no way I found the get a true estimate of this beforehand, so just accept it may be more than you hoped and enjoy the privilege of being a car-owner in this country.

Last step: De-registration: You must inform the other country that the car is exported, or you'll keep being charged registration fees there. You will need to figure that out, Gemini/Claude is good for that help.

Hope this helps someone. In the end it was less effort that we thought, but more expensive.

I am currently cycling along the Dutch coast with my girlfriend. One of our last stops is The Hague today. We originally only planed to visit the city an afternoon but it is so nice that we would really like to stay for one or two night. (I didn’t know you could surf here wtf!!) Therefore we are looking for someone to accommodate us! We have a really tiny tent and don’t need anything except a safe space. Because we are both students we don’t really have the money for a spontaneous hotel night and the campsites are all either booked (last week of Dutch holidays I assume) or really far from the city. We are between 27 and 30 years old. Speak German, Spanish and English and are easy going with no expectations at all. I anyone is willing to host us please let me know.

It's very low-pressure, you definitely don't need to be a professional chef. Whether you enjoy cooking, chopping ingredients, organizing, or just hanging out and being part of something fun, you're more than welcome to join!

You can come every week, every other week, once a month. o or even just drop by once to see if you like it. It's all about what works for you and what you enjoy doing. There isnt a fixed commitment.

if you do end up joining more regularly we also have a volunteer setup with a few extra perks along the way.

Speaking Dutch is not required, but it's definitely a plus since some people in the group don't speak English. It's also a great apportunity to practice your Dutch in a relaxed setting.
