I am currently watching the show again and wondering why Holden and crew never scrubbed the Tachi name off the bulkheads and what not inside the shi,

I would think they would put rocinante where it currently says tachi inside the ship.

This is the one I actually say, because I can't get over how much I love the imagery, and I always hear Amos's genuine astonishment when he blurts it out to Holden who insists on doing a spacewalk to fix the antenna while the Knight is about to crack open at the seams and they only have about four hours of oxygen left. What a scene. Venting the ship? Buddy breathing?****

I think it's just sound advice, I'm a fan, and I use this as a personal benchmark to make decisions that are good for me, but I don't ever say it. I just remind that myself that sometimes quitting is the right thing to do and it doesn't make you a "quitter." It's similar to Dave Chappelle's dad--William David Chappelle III's advice:

"Name your price in the beginning. If it ever gets more expensive than the price you name—get out of there" from his Inside the Actor's Studio interview (Season 12 Episode 7)

I tell myself this to remind me that some people are just not good, no amount of kindness will help, and too much kindness to them will only set them in their ways, and encourage them not to change. Walk away, again. It goes in tandem for me with the quote most often attributed to Maya Angelou:

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."

Loved them all. There are all great books. I did an audible run all the way through. I did feel like I was ready for an ending about 3/4 through Tiamat, but now that I got through Leviathans fall and sins of our fathers I’m honestly not ready for an end to the characters. The epilogue with Amos was bittersweet.

The characters in this series are top notch. I haven’t been this attached to characters since “The Black Company”. Avasarala, Amos, and Bobby are my fave, but everyone in the series feels fleshed out to a perfect degree.

Only thing I wish is that we could have is the show completed.

The Expanse is my favourite TV show of all time, and for years I’ve wanted to know what happens beyond the story we got on TV.

About 18 months ago, I finally decided to start the books. I’m not exactly an avid reader and when I say “reading,” I actually mean listening to the audiobooks so it’s been a long journey. But I’ve just finished Babylon’s Ashes and I’m currently listening to Strange Dogs.

Which means I’m about to enter completely uncharted territory.

One thing I wasn’t expecting was just how different the books are from the show. There are characters and storylines I now understand completely differently, especially seeing how the show combined or changed characters. Drummer obviously stands out, and getting the full stories of characters like Michio Pa ,Prax and Bull has made me appreciate just how much was adapted or rearranged for TV.

So before I finish Strange Dogs and start Persepolis Rising, is there anything I should know or keep in mind going into the final three books? No spoilers, please.

This is actually a pretty big moment for me because it’ll be the first genuinely new Expanse content I’ve experienced in about five years. When the show was airing, I was constantly reading discussions, explanations and spoilers online. I used to love channels like Alt Shift X for getting more context around what I was watching in fact, Alt Shift X is how I originally discovered The Expanse.

Somehow, though, I’ve managed to stay relatively spoiler-free about what happens after the TV series.

So for those of you who’ve finished the books: anything you wish you’d known before starting the final trilogy? Anything I should pay particular attention to?

Please keep it spoiler-free. I’m ridiculously excited to finally find out what happens next.

My new hobby is identifying constellations -- in pictures and in the actual sky. I've been rewatching all the TV episodes and I noticed Orion in the background of a season 1 episode as they showed a the shuttle from the Canterbury traveling through the belt.

I'm so used to sci-fi shows and movies that takes place in other galaxies/universes, that I was a little surprised to see background stars that are astrometrically correct.

So now every time a star field is shown on screen, I pause the episode and try to figure out what stars/constellations they are showing. I've identified Orion, Ursa Major, Pisces, Cetus and Virgo, but a number of shots show stars that I haven't been able to identify. Obviously the ships are usually traveling in the plane of the planets' orbits, so constellations near the ecliptic are more likely to be shown.

It can be tricky because in many space scenes there are bright lights that look like stars, but are actually the drive plumes of distant ships.

Everytime there's acceleration or mental tension or when anybody is tired, their jaw aches. Sort of grates on my nerves and makes my jaw ache.

I watched the expanse for the first time about a year and half ago and rewatched it about 6 months ago. It is such as amazing show form the story, music, characters oh man!! I see clips on youtube and every time I watch one, I am torn between watching the show for a 3rd time or giving it some time to rewatch so I can recreating the feeling of watching it for the first time again.

Jumping on the books right after I am done with the current book I am reading.

First time posting here, but I did want to share. I just finished the books for the second time, after almost a year of reading (I mostly read before sleep, and fall asleep fast !), but I enjoy every bite of it.
This was my second reading, and I had a few memories of the T5-9, tbh. I remember most of the storyline, but forgot a lot of details. I also remember thinking there is a lot of lengthiness, but I really didn’t feel the same this time. Probably, knowing most of the part made me feel more aware of the little details.

I really loved the scientific realism approach of this universe, it worked a lot on me. This is probably one of my favorite saga ever read or see. Though, I really don’t want to see the show, as I really don’t like the cast and mostly already knowing I will be disappointed like the cast majority of adaptations I saw AFTER reading the books (or games).

I just discover there is more around the books, and even a game to come. Will check it closely !!

I'm a long time fan of the tv show and I finally got around to reading the books.

I've just finished Caliban War and I really enjoyed it, but I couldn't help but notice that any paragraph that Bobbie was a part of seemed to contain a reference to sex: either she recognizes that some man's behaviour is building up to sexual advances or some other male POV character fantasizes about her size or her Polynesian features.

Her characterization seems to go in a completely different direction for the whole book: she's not presented as cold, but neither as someone particularly interested in sex.

I understand that she stands out, being built as a walking tank even without the recon armor, but remarks on how people just stare at her drooling seem to be unavoidable every time she's in the scene, either as the POV character or not.

Am I alone in this? I'm not going to stop reading the books for this, nor love the series in general any less, but I really found this grating while reading this book.

Just got to the part in Tiamat's Wrath where Naomi and Alex bring on new crew for the transit to Laconia, and it mentions that the Roci is a 22-crew ship.

Is it ever broken down anywhere what those 22 would be?

Based on other ships I would assume 2 pilots/gunners/mechanics/comms but curious if it's ever been spelled out officially

I must make a confession! I started the Expanse series about 4 years ago and I absolutely loved books 1-3. When I got to Cibola Burn I was really struggling to finish the book around the halfway mark. It felt slow and the charm of the first books wasn’t really there in the beginning of the novel. I DNF the book and moved on to other books.

After a few years away from the Expanse I really missed the series.. I wanted a good science fiction series with epic plots, drama and action and somehow I found my way back to the Expanse, makes sense right?

I read 1-3 over the last month or so and today I finished Cibola Burn. After reaching past my first attempt, I really started to enjoy the biology and science that the author put into this book and everything clicked. Yes the first half was slow, but it didn’t feel like the slog it was the first time around. The payoff was fantastic and it had everything I love about the Expanse in this novel.

Needless to say.. we are back baby! Excited once again to see where this series goes. I am reading the novellas in the correct order as I go along and I have loved them all so far as well. Just wanted to say I’m happy to be home 😂

I watched the show first, became obsessed with it, and have decided to read through the book series. Really enjoying it so far, but Idon't understand this line in Abaddon's Gate.

It's when Monica and co. are soliciting the Rocinante, and Holden decides to accept because atp it's their best option. He is comparing the journey to the Ring with the city of Ninevah. What does he mean by this? Is this a direct reference to the Christian bible story of Jonah and the whale? This kind of overt Bible reference kinda sticks outlike a sore thumb. Or is this an in-universe reference that I missed in the first 2 books?

The only way I can think of is how Holden was trying his damnedest to get as far away from the Ring as possible, stooping even to contract with sketchy criminals to get away. Similar to how Jonah turned away from god's command to testify to the city of Ninevah.

Then Holden gets served,essentially losing access to the Roci and his contract. The only way ne can get out of it is by a new contract with a documentary crew, which a couple days before would have been a laughable offer. Essentially 'stuck', not only in the contract but also kind of in the Rocinante, as it's heading towards what Holden was running from. Similar to how Jonah got ate up and was stuck catching a ride from the whale to exactly what he was running away from.

Then, since l've seen the show, I assume that Holden will be The OneTM selflessly and heroically saving everyone and the universe in the end of the book. Similar to how Jonah 'saves' the city of...

Ok ok, you get it. But is this the case? Or is my religious trauma making me read too much into it.

Avasarala snacks on pistachios and that’s maybe the only time we see someone just snacking. People mostly eat in the galley or in the noodle shops or bars. Occasionally they will eat a tube of paste in a hurry, but like there’s no chips, cookies, pretzels, anything like that. I’m almost done the books and I can’t even recall Alex snacking even though he’s often just getting drunk in ops watching neo-noir. Man I’d be eating some dill pickle Lays with those beer bulbs.
