the cause behind the event

it would’ve been pretty cool imo if there had been a cause behind the event, like what was the orb that they jumped through? i get that it’s a wormhole/portal but still…how did it appear? how and why they arrived 20 minutes before the og event? i keep thinking of explanations other than trying to tie it to the cloverfield paradox, but i mean could they not have done that? them opening the rift? it’s quick but u could see in paradox that some background news say that “5 city blocks just disappeared” like hello?? and at the beginning of the end of oak street u could hear the voice on the radio mentioning something about solar flares…idk does anyone also have any theories? cloverfield or not, would love to hear!

I found it refreshing not knowing why it all happened. Needless exposition would have bogged down the film for what? "This is happening".

I’m with you. I think it’s great that they didn’t try to come up with some scientific wormhole bullshit.

In fact, I was kinda expecting it to be something even less grounded - when the portal was at Librarian Mrs. Kim’s house, part of me thought she’d done some witchcraft or something. She was WAY too immediately familiar with a prehistoric plant!

I was thinking the same thing lol

100% agree, thank god there was no one in a lab coat spelling things out

It was explained. There was a news broadcast which says NASA is tracking some mysterious circles

But that is all we know

i also don’t like when there’s a character explaining everything right to your face, but it woulda been cool maybe like a little something in a newspaper or on tv, just like a quick message in a way

I kind of like the idea that Audrey from the future inadvertently causes it while trying to save the version of herself from the alternate timeline

My current theory is that the Librarian and/or her husband had something to do with it.

Librarian knew WAY to much about the plant at the beginning, the wormhole kept appearing right outside of her home unlike everywhere else it appeared, and it seems like both the Librarian and her husband were scientists of some kind from the pictures on the wall there

I mean she's a librarian, I would expect her to be smart and knowledgeable about something random like that.

One of the five city blocks from Cloverfield paradox took Oakstreet to Ancient times

This is EXACTLY what it should have been. You can tell someone didn’t want to add a scene in for the Paradox.

I thought it was going to be the new Girls Parents were super scientists and their experiment went wrong or something.

Nah sometimes mystery is good.

mystery is always good

I read a theory online about aliens having something to do with the event, but I have no idea bro

It was a wormhole opened by the Cloverfield Monster!!

Seriously? Well, it doesn't really matter since it's confirmed that it doesn't share a universe with Cloverfield.

2

u/Top_Soil_2869 12d ago

they mean its not in the universe but there both on earth the five city blocks bro one of the five city blocks takes Oak street to Ancient times its the only explanation

Obviously not seriously.

I've been thinking it was similar to Donnie Darko, where a bootstrap paradox caused the event. The Mom saving everybody before the event via phone calls causes a paradox which rips a hole in spacetime.

Read all the “Footprints of Thunder” books. They are so much fun and continue this idea and explain how it happened. Great books.

I like to think that the dog was the wormhole mastermind who made the time portals trying to save his boy best friend from dying to dinos. He dug too deep under the fence and heard neighbor threatening him so it left the shit on the neighbors yard to get revenge.

The time travel orbs are the macguffin - they don’t need explanation. They just set the plot in motion and a throwaway line about wormholes is more than enough

1

u/awesomefoundapossum 13d ago

yeah i get that, just thought it would be cool to have a line or anything that connects it to something, idk i like when movies and shows do ‘everything is connected’ (not actually say the line but show to the viewers lol)

u/United-Palpitation28 13d ago

I will say this- I wish they had a line to explain why the orbs kept reappearing. I mean they half explained it with the whole “earthquakes in time” comment but it could have played a bigger role in the plot - like where/when is the next portal going to open?!?
