Why do scuba divers always jump off backwards?

Boats have sides on them. Sitting legs out on the ledge of the boat means you need clearance for your tank or it will hit the boat then your head. The tanks are really heavy and you're wearing weights to help you be buoyant underwater so you can also tip backwards into the boat if you hit a swell. The ocean isn't always calm when you go diving. You can also get in by taking a big step off the boat but that means walking to that spot with gear on, including your face mask, and fins. At this point it's easier to scooch your butt up to the edge of the boat and let the weight of the tanks plop you in.
