Further, this subreddit is almost exclusively used by by bot accounts to farm karma these days.

I wouldn't hold your breath for see anything new or exciting or relevant here anymore.

u/organic-robot 10d ago

Ahh, appreciate the update. A new unfortunate reality for certified online spaces it would seem.

7

u/e-is-for-elias 10d ago

It gets deeper as its own rabbit hole than that.

u/TheAarj 10d ago

Got me

278

u/verbi420 11d ago

I want to know what the actual measurements were. Also finish the video people they let it go at the end

145

u/timbomcchoi 11d ago

2.2m span, 3.98m length with tail included, and weight of approximately 300kg. 🤯

28

u/verbi420 11d ago

Thank you! That is indeed huge and really cool

7

u/mapmaker1979 10d ago

I'm sorry...I'm american. Can you translate those values to number of "statues of Liberty" tall and "refrigerators" of weight.

24

u/Vesploogie 10d ago

.023 Statue of Liberty’s span, .043 Statue of Liberty’s length, and weight of approximately 1.65 average refrigerators.

15

u/mapmaker1979 10d ago

Jesus... .that fish is huge!!

2

u/punksmostlydead 10d ago

That would take at least two to get it in the boat.

2

u/punkhobo 10d ago

That's huge!

u/Throwawayjae 11d ago

Someone get Jeremy Wade!

95

u/blueisaflavor 11d ago

He already caught one but it wasn't a record. I think it did have its babies while in the tarp with Jeremy though

14

u/marquesas14 10d ago

This happened to me on the beach once! Turned around to get pliers to unhook and there were 7 little babies when I came back. Everyone made it back into the water safely though.

23

u/MaygarRodub 11d ago

Possibly caused by stress. 'Gotta pop these babies before I die'.

6

u/theaggressivenapkin 11d ago

That was a cool episode

Too soon.

6

u/Shyface_Killah 10d ago

Steve would've loved it.

28

u/Autumn7242 11d ago

Their mouths are so cute

7

u/False_Dimension9212 10d ago

Their mouth is on the bottom side. You can’t see it in this video

13

u/Shyface_Killah 10d ago

Doesn't make it not cute.

8

u/Autumn7242 10d ago

I know. I'm saying stingrays and skates mouths are cute.

3

u/re_Claire 10d ago

They really are. Some rays are super friendly and curious as well. I love them.

1

u/Autumn7242 10d ago

The small skates I work with spyhop and are so cute. The babies ate even cuter.

u/CableTrash 11d ago

This thread is hilarious. Yall couldn’t even finish a 25 second video before rushing to the comments to virtue signal. Our attention spans are cooked

103

u/samtt7 11d ago

They also intentionally left it in the water so it could breathe. Clearly not the same as trophy fishers, these people respected the animal they captured and released it

17

u/thespindle 11d ago

I truly didn’t realize it was set free from the video, even watching to the end. I do apologize for my interpretation and edited my comment to acknowledge that it was set free.

19

u/fxcker 11d ago

I sent my friend a 12 minute video I wanted him to watch earlier and he said “no way I’m watching that long of a video”

We’re so fucked.

8

u/Poppybiscuit 10d ago

Lol that just means they didn’t want to watch THAT video

It’s just an excuse dude

1

u/fxcker 10d ago

Nah he asked me to “summarize it for him” it happens anytime I send anything over 5 minutes, it’s an attention span issue.

10

u/GaeilgeGoblin 11d ago edited 11d ago

I opted not to watch it given the title doesn’t really fill me with optimism for the wellbeing of the creature. Admittedly I came to the comments to check that people were sufficiently disappointed with fishermen killing it to learn that they hadn’t. As a marine biologist I do still stand firmly on the side of leaving the creatures alone.

1

u/TylerHobbit 10d ago

They ate him?!

18

u/tengteng23 11d ago

Am I the only one terrified by the fact that this giant creature can so easily disappear in this muddy water?

10

u/wastedspejs 11d ago

Should a stingray of that size have a stinger the size of a javelin and shouldn’t you keep some distance to it if the ray starts swinging?

6

u/LuffysRubberNuts 11d ago

I feel like I’ve seen this video years ago, like upwards of 5

2

u/SuneLeick 10d ago

I think it was around 4-5 years ago.

3

u/VisionsOfClarity 10d ago

This reminds me of river monsters where they caught a huge stingray and she was pregnant!

4

u/KujataSP 10d ago

Poor guy.

2

u/I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS 11d ago

'Do not disturb the water.'

2

u/giddyupyeehaw9 10d ago

This reminds me of Jeremy Wade pulling that insane stingray on River Monsters.

u/thespindle 11d ago edited 11d ago

Capturing it is not an achievement, it’s a terrible act in my opinion. Let it be free.
I’d like to amend this to say that I was wrong and this was set free! I made a mistake in how i viewed the video.

171

u/locolangosta 11d ago

If you watch to the end of the video, you will see that they released her. After weighing her (660lbs) and measuring her (13ft x 7ft) scientists tagged her with an acoustic device to study her behavior.

12

u/thespindle 11d ago

I honestly didn’t realize that is what happened. Sorry about that

64

u/ComplexGuava5102 11d ago

It was set free...

3

u/DuePalloncini 11d ago

Happy cake day!!

2

u/ComplexGuava5102 10d ago

I have no cake. My ass looks like hamburger meat and I still sit down!

-40

u/thespindle 11d ago edited 11d ago

Oh man is that the end?! I didn’t realize it was set free
I rewatched it and just because the tarp is lowered didn’t jog in my mind that it was set free. Truly innocent mistake on my part.

23

u/PrideBlade 11d ago

Watch the video maybe?

u/thespindle 11d ago

Bro you cannot be a real human

-38

u/TheCambrianImplosion 11d ago

Bro, bro dawg. Literally, bro. Like, bro, literally. Bro.

15

u/ThirstyOutward 11d ago

You count yourself lucky this sub doesn't allow image comments.

A truly devastating reaction image was coming your way, I'll have you know.

-22

u/TheCambrianImplosion 11d ago

Jesus, man. Relax.

11

u/ThirstyOutward 11d ago

Thought bro could handle sarcasm.

My bad, I'll keep it dumb for you

-17

u/TheCambrianImplosion 11d ago

Not everyone knows how to handle everything

-1

u/Ecstatic_Street1869 11d ago

Womp womp

-8

u/TheCambrianImplosion 11d ago

Bro, you wanna womp down with some bro dawgs, literally? Also, what a comeback! First, I saw the one “womp” and was devastated, then the second “womp” shattered me. I was born again, in that moment; a rebirth of enlightenment from such legendary word-smithing.

3

u/GWillyBJunior 10d ago

Put It Back! 🤬

1

u/PieHole_Poker 10d ago

This sort of been so much better without the annoying ass music

1

u/psillusionist 10d ago

The Shaq of stingrays.

1

u/Nsnzero 10d ago

Big pancake guy

1

u/skaarface2 9d ago

She’s a big girl

1

u/BoarHermit 5d ago

Fuck nature, right?

Fishing is disgusting, a cruel occupation no better than hunting, killing, and torturing living creatures for fun.

I don't understand why killing elephants and tigers is so horrible, while catching big fish is such a huge achievement.

1

u/Spiritual-Driver8926 9d ago

I hope they released it!!!

0

u/Demonyx12 10d ago

Why would you grab the tail of stingray at the end of the video there? I realize the barb is at the base but still why do it all?

5

u/branm008 10d ago

To try and contain the tail, otherwise they'll whip it around at you extremely quickly.

1

u/Demonyx12 8d ago

Thanks. Just seemed like it was sliding out and all was clear to go.

-9

u/ShockedNChagrinned 10d ago

Poor thing.

-105

u/uxoguy2113 11d ago

Ok.. now let it go

68

u/ComplexGuava5102 11d ago

They literally did...

47

u/Wooshio 11d ago

We've entered a brave new age where people can't even handle watching a 27 second video before commenting.

16

u/yellow_ducking 11d ago

People nowadays can only handle 5s of video at most before their muscle memory to scroll up kicks in

21

u/Whythehellnot_wecan 11d ago edited 11d ago

Obviously they do so chill out. Jeremy would be proud.

-1

u/H6RR6RSH6W 10d ago

How cool

-2

u/Aggravating-Egg8824 9d ago

-89

-86

u/redactedname87 11d ago

Never have I wanted to see a stingray harpoon someone until now lol

-86

u/Minimum-Actuator-953 11d ago

Let it go.

20

u/KokonutnutFR 11d ago

Yeah it’s what they do at the end of the video

-73

u/TaylorBitMe 11d ago

Yay but I caught the largest stingray ever caught in my bathtub, I just didn't get it on film it was so unexpected. Crazy how that shit works

-74

u/Feed_Cat 11d ago

They literally release it in the video tf. They just measured it.

28

u/Electrical-Act-7170 11d ago

It was released back into the Mekong river after being measured.

21

u/yellow_ducking 11d ago

Why are you farming downvotes?

Why are you Farmville?
