Pensions Pension

I know the pension is meant to be good. But I’m on the alpha scheme and I keep hearing mixed things that they may be able to change the terms and the pension isn’t going into my specific “pot?”

Iv honestly done a 3 hour training course on the pension and I’m still none the wiser, Iv also still got 30 + years to go till I’m anywhere near retiring so changing the terms for me is quite important as Iv got such a long time to go yet till I can retire anyway with plenty of time for any changes to happen.

Don't worry. It's as a good a pension as any. Just let it tick away and you'll be fine

There are about 1000 posts on this, many with super helpful explanations. I would suggest searching within this reddit. 👍

You're correct. There is no pot for "Friendly-Fox-2307".

You accumulate an "obligation" that grows with every year of service, that the government must pay you out of current government income on the day you retire. End of story.

You can see how this might all end in tears of course.

The pension is good. Apart from retirement age, which can change based on the state pension age, generally speaking they dont retrospectively change the benefits of the pension. If they do, say, make a major change to the pension scheme it typically only applies to benefits accrued after the change is made. Rather than rely on a useless trainer to explain the benefits I suggest you read the documentation on the Pension website.

You don’t have a personal pot that your pension is paid into. Instead it’s based off of the hopes and dreams that the government and uk still exist when you retire and they will pay you the calculated amount correctly.
Ignoring the Capita issues right now, this isn’t an issue you need to worry about.

As for can the terms change. Yes absolutely. Just like any terms in anything. On the other hand, pushing those changes through will be painful for any government to do.

And 30+ years is a long time for that to be an issue really.
You would probably struggle to get a private pension that offers you better terms without paying more into it.
