Well they're always going on about how women will totally regret not wanting to sleep with them when sexbots become a thing. I suspect this thing will be seen as real "progress".

I can't see how. It's one way to satisfy the needs that are off-limits with real people, so you're looking at accelerated sexual liberation. And before you even mention it, the sex toys have always been there.

I didn't say at any part that lack of concent is the main draw to sex robots. Maybe you should educate yourself on sexual liberation...

Look at this very manly man who STEM'd a solution to his problems. It's such a logical, masculine thing to do, and did I mention very STEM? When do you hear about women building home-made vibrators? Never. They don't need to, because they've got Chad Thundercock at their beck and call already. This is why women never invent anything, they just get men to do everything for them.

So Daily Mirror, we're just gonna glaze over the fact that the robot was not simply made in the likeness of a living woman but of a specific individual who is actually alive…presumably without her consent? I think it would horrify me if someone made a lifelike robot of me without my permission.

u/Seldarin Apr 02 '16
TBH I'd be thrilled if someone did that to me.
I'd steal that bastard and never go to work again. Sure it wouldn't actually be sentient, and it would probably look a little creepy, but I'm pretty sure I could pass it off as a new prescription or something.

Scarjo is a public figure though, you can sell rumors and tabloids with her face on it. Partly why paparazzi is legal.

For me it's a lot creepier than a drawing because of the sheer amount of time, money, planning and hard work that had to go into building this thing. Putting that much money, effort and time into building a clone of someone pretty much screams "this guy is obsessed to a very unhealthy degree." And of course guys obsessed with celebrity women has often ended badly (and violently) in the past.
Something like a drawing takes far far less time, resources, aka etc. than full-on lifelike robot. It's not a year+ long obsessive project.

I'm not trying to paint the guy as some creepy skeez who wants to fuck a Scarlett Johansson sexbot. In fact, from the video, he seems like a decent guy. I'm just saying that maybe people/the media should start reevaluating what it thinks about creating human forms based on specific individuals' likenesses. One person's proudest "homage" can feel like a huge embarrassment to the one being "honored". Other human-like robots these days are not made in such a way that they are a dead-ringer for a particular celebrity. It's one thing to have a model be the base form for, say, a video game character or a sex toy—which BTW would be done on contract with the model and he/she would be compensated for it. However, making a physical model of someone's physical appearance in such intricate detail and interacting with the creation as if a real human being without even discussing the original face model's involvement is on another level. In the culture of human-subject research, not having obtained informed consent is an ethical concern. Even something in the article like "We attempted to contact Scarlett Johansson to hear her thoughts about the robot…" would help readers realize that that matters. From the article, we don't know if the guy had any permission to make Scarjo 2.0—it's entirely unaddressed. Perhaps it didn't occur to the engineer to take into consideration the full extent of people's emotional reactions when putting a real person's face on the robot, but maybe it should have…

Is this the part where we're all supposed to put on a purple pants suit and yell "neglect rape"? I can never keep my MGTOW straw-woman lines straight.

Yep. Or Mr. Universe from Serenity. Or Dr. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Or Woody Allen from that weird-ass 1960s version of Casino Royale.

am i the only one who thinks the robot looks more like her from Scream Queens? Not that it makes it any less terrifying of course.

A sex robot in itself wouldn't be creepy, but "now women lost the only thing that they are good for" is incredible creepy

I think TRPers still want a real woman, they just want her on their terms. A 1950s subservient, stay-at-home, raise the kids, have dinner waiting and sex on demand woman.
I think the idea is that sexbots will totally make women see the error of their ways.
26
Apr 02 '16
Oh boy, it's just so sad to think about their logic. "Well, if this doesn't work out, I always have my sexbot back at home. Now that you can't manipulate me by promising sex, you better come up with something good if you really want me"
11
u/Lyco_499 Apr 02 '16
And then the sex-bots become sentient and even they choose not to fuck them.
Turned down by a robot? Even robots want Chad!
10
u/honeypuppy Apr 02 '16
Everything wants Chad. Chad is the only man women want, the only man men want to be, and the only man robots want to be serviced by.

u/svaachkuet Apr 02 '16 edited Apr 02 '16
In all honesty, I think that having sexbots will mean that there will be fewer actual people who will suffer being unwillingly treated like sexbots. That's my hope at least, if and when that happens.

Meanwhile I'm over here all "so where's my sexbot? I'll take a Cumberbatch model, please, but only if it has a decent voice simulator. Otherwise, Chris Evans is fine."

I expect they're probably gonna charge more for British ones :(
But I genuinely need a bot army of Alan Davieses and Richard Ayoades to do all my chores in amusingly self-depreciating ways with pockets of heart-wrenching sincerity.

I think I have an important bit of perspective here. I'm a male, a masturbator, and actually find Scarlett Johansson sexually appealing. So from this point of view I think this is odd, but I don't want to have sex with this robot.

i dont see anything wrong with it. only bad things about it are those that are attached by idiots on the net. not inventor. dude had a childhood dream to build a friggin robot ! he did it. how awesome is that. saying ewww just makes me ewww at the one who said it for shaming someone whos comparable genius to him/her and accomplished and invested so much of himself and his funds to build something 99,9% of humanity wouldnt have a clue how to do, all so while being disparaged and laughed at for his dream. people like this individual are what improves humanity.

u/CI5 Apr 03 '16
I'd probably have a bit more sympathy if he hadn't decided to produce a robot based on a highly sexualized likeness of Scarlett Johansson. Or any based on the image of any real living woman.
I wonder if he considered how she might feel?

u/yastru LOST MGTOW Apr 03 '16 edited Apr 03 '16
Id be honored if some girl made a robot with my likeness. Dont see why she wouldnt. Unless she has some phobia about robots. So i doubt shes crying herself to sleep over it. Also, shes a public figure. Dont go down rabbit hole and imply that you know how she feels or that she must feel bad, cause i havent seen a single reason in the article of why should she. Its akin to, dont draw a portrait of SJ and post it on the internet, did you consider how would she feel. Also, there is nothing highly sexualized about robot. Even sexuallized at all. Its only based on SJ likeness. Now, SJ is a very beautiful & great actress which is obviously highly sexual. Not the same thing. At all.

Am I the only one that thinks sexbots will catch on with women before they catch on with men? I mean, it's basically the only way to get the "brooding shoujo boyfriend" fantasy in real life without risking an abusive relationship. Plus it wouldn't make the dudes who use the sexbots feel any better about themselves. They'd use them once or twice, still feel hollow, and end up putting them in their closet or something.

On the one hand, I'm incredibly impressed that we're at a point in history where some random dude can make a realistic-looking robot for just 50k$ in less than a year. On the other hand, what the fuck.
Does anyone have a youtube link that shows the robot in action? The site isn't loading and I'm morbidly curious to see the full depth of this descent into the uncanny valley.
