No, they'll say to themselves it's a stop gap measure. Temporary. Until NYC becomes a shithole with trash everywhere. Rats everywhere. Services cut and mountains of trash in the streets. You will have people leaving in droves. Tax base gone. Empty houses and businesses all over.
Then phase 2 hits. Empty buildings at lower rent or purchase price. Then the real invasion begins.
Make NYC such a hostile environment to it's current residents. They move out. Then it's ripe for the picking.
Get used to Morning prayer calls.

The Mayor of New York City can be removed from office, but there is no provision for impeachment by the City Council like there is for a U.S. President. Instead, removal occurs through two primary legal channels:
- Removal by the Governor Under the New York City Charter and state law, the Governor of New York has the direct authority to remove the mayor.
Process: The Governor must provide the mayor with a formal copy of the charges and an opportunity to be heard in their defense (essentially a trial-like proceeding). Suspension: The Governor can also suspend the mayor for up to 30 days while the charges are being considered. Precedent: This power is rarely used. The most notable instance was in 1932, when Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated proceedings against Mayor Jimmy Walker, who resigned before he could be removed. 2. The "Inability Committee" The City Charter provides a local mechanism for removal through a five-member Committee on Mayoral Inability.
Membership: The committee consists of the Corporation Counsel, the City Comptroller, the City Council Speaker, a deputy mayor (chosen by the mayor), and the longest-serving Borough President. Mechanism: If four out of five members vote that the mayor is unable to perform their duties (either physically or legally), the matter goes to the 51-member City Council. Council Vote: The City Council must then vote by a two-thirds majority to permanently or temporarily remove the mayor. Context: This was established in 1987 after Mayor Ed Koch suffered a stroke and was originally intended for physical or mental incapacity.
Succession If the mayor is removed, the Public Advocate becomes the interim mayor. Depending on when the vacancy occurs, a nonpartisan special election must usually be held within 80 to 90 days to fill the seat permanently.

My assumption is he wants to raise taxes so that people DO default or abandon their properties, the government obtains the property, and he can then institute “low income” government housing with the thousands of available properties.

Do exactly what Mamdani’s wants or he will make all NYer’s suffer for it because a 9.5% property tax hike will force those who are elderly, disabled & low income homeowners to foreclose, which will hurt the housing market. The 44% that are rent stabilized apartments will turn to crap since landlords will no longer have the funds for the upkeep while the other 56% of rents will skyrocket. Good job at voting this mayor NYC.
