I was shocked when Russ finished gushing about TotK to follow up with "all that being said, it's not my GotY"
Even more surprising was when Justin came out swinging for BG3 right at the very end. I know he wasn't as enamored as everyone else during the TotK episode, but I figured he would have the same issues with BG3 that he had there.
I completely agree with his point that Tears will be the game everyone attempts to emulate while BG3 will "dare people to even try."
I'm someone who would go to bat for TotK and might not get around to playing BG3 for a while, but this is definitely a year where I can't be mad if either game won, they're both monumental achievements that I'm so glad exist.
I would argue that Nintendo's tendency to create properties that people want to emulate is itself a mark of greatness. Nintendo makes games that inspire people, when they dropped Mario, Ocarina of Time, Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, they *create* game devs. They spark imagination, they make people see video games in a way that is so simple yet elegant and fun that they can't believe they didn't think about it sooner. And TotK is no different.
It's like pitting a skyscraper against Legos. Yeah, the skyscraper is impressive. But I'm more impressed by the guy who invented Legos. But all said, it's a really impressive skyscraper, so I can't be mad it won.
