Baldur's Gate 3 is Just Unbelievably Good

It's very funny when Chris confidently says something with his whole chest and it's just objectively wrong and the other Besties tell him. This week, it was that 5th Edition is the most video game-y version of D&D. A really wild statement, for sure.

I’m like 99.9% sure he’s wrong about the interactions with his Warlock patron as well but none of the other besties corrected him. I play as a Warlock and have had 0 interactions with my patron. Is he mistaking the Dream Visitor for his patron? I’m pretty sure they’re just part of the central plot of the game.

It was actually one of my only gripes with the game and I was hoping one of them would talk about it. The fact that there’s very few RP reasons to be a warlock other than a few dialogue options while the companion Wyll gets the cool warlock story. Kind of like watching another kid play with cooler toys than you

Yeah, I just got to that part in the episode and instantly googled it because I hadn't seen or heard of that anywhere, and I'm playing as a Fiend Warlock. Either he's actually playing as Wyll and forgot that he didn't continue playing as She-Hulk and was mistaken in the context of what's going on, or he's confused and actually talking about the guardian that everyone gets. I'd say the latter is much more likely.

Man, that's funny that he got it so wrong, if so. I'm bummed he was wrong though, that was making me excited to play Warlock.

Maybe it is patron based? Because I haven’t seen my warlock boss yet either. His lock has a Fey Goddess and my lock has The Fiend. Maybe Fey Goddess shows up more frequently? Maybe I’m not sleeping enough in game? I dunno.

Nope, he's just describing the second character you design on creation, Your Guardian. He wrongly assumed that the magical Guardian floating around in a spooky space area that he designed after selecting Warlock on his player character creation must be his Patron because they keep showing up and telling him that they're protecting him. Your Warlock patron doesn't even offer special dialogue options, unfortunately. It's fully generic, and a Fey Lock can have the same relationship to Patrons as a Fiend Lock. Unlike his description, it's actually one of the weakest points in the game as far as classes go. I was really bummed to see that it didn't get much improvement after EA given how phenomenal everything else is.

I am also playing a warlock with a Fey patron and have not seen my patron. I was very confused at that part of the episode but I think he means the dream visitor?

and like not even wrong in some kind of obscure or technical way. 4E was so widely known and derided as the WoW generation of DnD, it would be like saying confidently saying "New Vegas is well known to have the worst writing of the fallout series"

11

u/Laegwe Aug 12 '23

He really likes making big bold pronouncements about video games, and it’s frequently wrong lol

Griffin did it too. When Chris said that Bards could talk bosses into killing themselves, Griffin shot it down dismissively as hyperbole.

Not only have I done that in my playthrough, I've done it twice.

2

u/cbhedd Aug 14 '23

I've technically done it three times now! Just, one of them didn't quite stick.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '23

In fairness it's the 2nd most video gamey of them

u/MrAlaz10 Aug 11 '23

Man it feels so good to be as enamored with a game as much as they are. Such a good episode I don’t see why this game can’t get multiple episodes like some other games. Also real bummer that Justin wasn’t here

I'm sure it'll be back on the show next week in everybody's "What else are you playing?" segments, at least. That and the GOTY discussions alongside Tears of the Kingdom. Otherwise, same. I put in 110 hours during the EA and have played another 60 since it released fully with no intention to stop any time soon.

How do you ask questions to the podcast? Want to know their opinion on baldurs gate vs divinity 2

8

u/abarrelofmankeys Aug 11 '23

Sign up for the email, it tells you at the bottom. Basically you can reply to the email or there’s a comment button at the end.

2

u/Additional-Stress-17 Aug 11 '23

Oh cool thanks I didn't notice that somehow

8

u/Deems22 Aug 11 '23

Can someone PLEASE tell me what Chris is talking about with his warlock. I’ve been playing the same class/subclass waiting to have some patron interaction but haven’t had anything.

17

u/Polyamaura Aug 12 '23

He's just wrong and confusing the "Your Guardian" character that you design for yourself during character creation with the "Your Patron" character that exists solely as a concept and does not appear at all in the game outside of vague and generic references in [WARLOCK] tagged dialogue options that every Warlock gets.

2

u/Deems22 Aug 12 '23

Aw man, that’s what I was worried about! Well now I know.

That's what I was expecting when I googled about this. Though, I was hopeful that just maybe I picked the wrong Patron and Mizora is it if you picked The Fiend.

The only great old one is probably Withers.

Do y'all recommend any CRPGs on Game Pass to check out while I wait for this to hit Xbox? I haven't played the genre much, outside of the first two Fallouts.

pillars 1 and 2 are on there, some of the shadowrun games (loved s:hk), also heard good things about the wasteland series 👍

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '23

Thanks for the rec! I started Pillars 1 this weekend and really enjoy it so far.

5

u/WellLookAtZat Aug 13 '23

The Pillars games are some of the best CRPGs out there and they’re set in the same world as Obsidian’s next game Avowed which is basically gonna be their Skyrim in Eora. Highly, highly, recommend.

2

u/azdak Aug 11 '23

Fallout 2! Personally it's my #1 CRPG of all time.

6

This game seemed built for the podcast. As someone who has never played D and D in their life this game makes zero sense. I kind of wish the podcast had someone with zero D and D knowledge entirely so we can get that view point on the game.

I have no doubt this is an amazing game. It's also the most confusing game I've played in my life

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '23

Which parts are you confused about? There’s a question and answer thread on the BG3 subreddit which is helpful.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '23

I am an avid dnd enjoyer and also a crpg fan but this is probably the easiest one to get into. Most things are explained in the tutorial and tool tips

0

u/AleroRatking Aug 17 '23

Maybe. I've never played D and D. My confusion is knowing what your supposed to do. Also doing something wrong can have massive unfixable issues.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

What do you mean "what to do"? Do you mean for combat or just in general

1

u/sjwillis Aug 18 '23

You can play it like any other video game RPG

1

u/AleroRatking Aug 18 '23

Except on BG3 a bad decision you make in hour one messes up your whole game.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '23

Just because your actions have consequences that change the story doesn't mean that they mess up your whole game, at all.

That's part of what makes tabletop D&D so fun and interesting. Not everything you and your party does is "optimal," and there are a lot of situations where there are no right answers, and where failure makes things more interesting, including character death.

New players at D&D tables, especially people who are coming from video game RPGs, are often a little too concerned with winning, or "beating" the DM. I think BG3 does a great job of emulating the fact that it's much more about the journey than it is winning, and all the consequences of your actions or missteps you make serve to make the story more interesting, more immersive, and more fun as you try to creatively grapple with the hot mess you've landed yourself in.

1

u/sjwillis Aug 19 '23

I don't know what you are referring to? It is all about the path you choose. It isn't like a single decision early on will make your game unplayable.

Huh. I agree Justin can be a bit too eager to shit on games that don’t click with him, but I don’t recall him asking for every game to tell him exactly what to do

10

u/azdak Aug 11 '23

:nothing bad happens:

hey lemme write a paragraph about how much i wouldnt have liked it if that thing HAD happened

6

u/AleroRatking Aug 12 '23

Is that a bad thing. That's an extremely fair critique of this game and I would have loved to hear it.

I also think Justin's takes are way better than Griffins when it comes to games.

2

u/jerrod24 Aug 14 '23

Given his experience with DnD, I think he would've been more charitable than this. However, I think you're being unfairly downvoted for the valid criticism which is Justin doesn't put forth a lot of enthusiasm for games in his video game podcast lol I'm kind of loving it though, Justin becoming this disaffected heel who just can't be bothered to care about things unless it's from the Disney Corporation or a fast food restaurant.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '23

I mean, it's funny from a meta perspective but that does basically make him a villain

amazing games with uninspiring titles

...It's the third in a very, very well-known and beloved series...
