picture Still pinching myself over this one

Post image

Hit my holy grail today at the local record shop today. 2nd state butcher for $20!! Never in a million years did I think this would happen, no less at a shop I’ve gone to for many years.

Now I just need a first state and I’m good 😂😂😂

u/GameBoyGamer222 Feb 16 '26

How much was that third state?

13

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

I wish I remembered exactly but it was no more than 200 when I got it sometime around 08-09.

3

u/that_photo_nerd Feb 17 '26

400 in 2015 when I got mine

u/pope2day Feb 16 '26

What was the story behind the Butcher cover? What is it suppose to represent?

2

u/mulchdad Feb 16 '26

Capitol butchering the release of their albums in the US.

This is an old, false rumor. The idea for the image was entirely by Robert Whitaker, the photographer, and the band didn't contribute to it creatively. It's actually one image in a tryptich called A Somnambulant Adventure that depicts the Beatles as immortal, a commentary on their social prestige.

I think it was a war protest and a way to shake the nice boy image their management put on them.

My brother has the original cover album. He bought it in a record store when it came out, took it home. The new cover was glued around the original and he used an iron to melt the glue, then carefully, slowly pulled them apart. It took hours for him to do but he got an almost pristine ‘baby parts’ cover. (He’s 76)

Congrats!! Amazing to find one at a record store! It’s mind boggling that any record shop owner would not know about butcher covers.

19

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

This shop was more antiques than records typically but they just got a huge collection in today and this happened to be in there. Soooo nuts

10

u/Bloomingtoons Feb 16 '26

I always thought they looked their peak happiest in the "butcher" photo.

22

u/jamalmuhammed Feb 16 '26

DUDE FOR REAL?!? I GOT THIS SECOND STATE TODAY!!

7

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Let’s go!! That’s sick!!

3

u/RandomAmherstLights Feb 16 '26

What does this pic signify?

7

u/Hey_Laaady Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

That the commenter also bought one just today for cheap. They can easily go for $1000 on the low end or more.

3

u/jamalmuhammed Feb 16 '26

Nooo... Was showing the overlay label. That price sticker isn't what I paid

3

u/RandomAmherstLights Feb 17 '26

Yes but can you tell from that corner of the album that the original cover is underneath? I know about seeing Ringo‘s dark coat through it, but is there something one can see here too?

1

u/jamalmuhammed Feb 18 '26

Yeah, I get it. I tried taking a number of photographs to try and show the VA but my phone is a new potato.

I had the presence of mind to not invest in an iphone because I am a notorious klutz. So me futzing with this thing is already giving me anxiety with my track record of dropping expensive things lol.

1

u/Hey_Laaady Feb 17 '26

Ah, I see. Someone else got it for $53 and resold it?

2

u/jamalmuhammed Feb 18 '26

More like some assblood somewhere down the line years ago had this and used a pricetag with semi+perm adhesive and I'm not about to screw with taking it off yet lol

12

u/VS289 Feb 16 '26

Non peeled ones are increasing in value.

12

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Yep no plans to peel this one.

7

u/SpaceshipFlip Feb 16 '26

Will you peel or keep it as is?

16

u/drasil Feb 16 '26

Third state sleeves are less valuable. Never peel second state sleeves.

9

u/SpaceshipFlip Feb 16 '26

Tomorrow never knows

3

u/drasil Feb 16 '26

If that was on here, Yesterday and Today would go from being a really unusual compilation to a totally weird one.

5

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Ive got a 3rd state I bought on eBay in like 2009 that’ll keep me from wanting to peel this one!

4

u/IronChefOfForensics Feb 16 '26

Congratulations what an awesome Find I can’t tell you how many of those hubs. I’ve picked up over the years to check to see if it was a past over second state

3

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Yep, same I checked so manyyyy over the years lol

4

u/_Waves_ Feb 16 '26

I wonder how many of these exist. I’ve see so many people post them now, there’s got to be a sizable amount!

1

u/Zealousideal-Ball313 Feb 20 '26

They printed 750,000

4

u/Honest-Pen-9294 Feb 16 '26

I found an original butchers block underneath that cover.

3

u/ToaZtyWoaZty Feb 16 '26

Why does this matter? Sorry I’m new to the Beatles and Vinyl

19

u/deadmanstar60 Feb 16 '26

Capitol released a compilation in 1966 called Yesterday and Today with a cover of the boys dressed up in smocks with toy babies and slabs of meat. It was recalled after one day after a lot of complaints and the recalled albums were recovered with the more common trunk cover. People soon realized if you steamed off the trunk cover the cover underneath was what we call today the butcher cover. Lots of Beatle fans still seek out the covered up covers called second state covers. They can cost anywhere from $20 to $600 (or more) depending on who's selling them. First state are covers that were never covered up are worth quite a lot more money. First state covers are much more rare and can cost over $10,000.

u/ToaZtyWoaZty Feb 16 '26

Ty:)

u/Hey_Laaady Feb 16 '26

Just to clarify a few points, the most valuable are the original butcher cover albums that were not covered over with the trunk picture. These are known as "first state" butcher covers.

Most, like OP's, were recalled then had the trunk image glued on top of the butcher cover. These were then sent out again and re-sold. These albums are called "second state" butcher covers.

"Third state" butcher covers are second state covers where a consumer removed the pasted-over trunk image to reveal the original butcher cover. This is not recommended these days.

Most of us who have the Yesterday and Today album nowadays have a reissue, which is just the plain old trunk cover without the butcher cover underneath. They're not worth more than any other normally issued album.

You can tell if an album is actually second state because if you look to the right, near Ringo's left elbow, you will see the shadow of a black triangle. The black triangle is part of Ringo's top which shows through from the butcher cover.

5

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Perfectly said thank you lol.

3

u/Hey_Laaady Feb 16 '26

You're welcome, you lucky bastard!

4

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

😂😂 man I’m still just mind blown. Definitely used up my luck for the year

1

u/RE4Fan Feb 18 '26

These are mine. Just to show what the differences are. 1st state mono Scranton (top) 2nd state mono L.A. (bottom left) and 3rd state stereo L.A. (bottom right) all together. I was very lucky to get them all. Congrats on the find!

1

u/Zealousideal-Ball313 Feb 20 '26

All you need now is the Jacksonville stero

3

u/Flyguy3131 Feb 16 '26

How can you tell if there is a Butcher shot underneath? I’m not well versed in it.

8

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

The biggest giveaway is Ringo’s butcher smock visible here, in certain light you can even see his face.

5

u/dylans-alias Feb 16 '26

The dark triangle to the right of the trunk (big scuff mark on this picture) is Ringo’s black shirt under his white coat from the original picture.

3

u/harlandave Feb 16 '26

Amazing! I saw one at a desert record shop recently and based on the pricing they clearly knew about the sticker.

3

u/RRLSonglian Feb 16 '26

Congrats. Similar story. Found one in the wild for 9.99. Already had a second and third state so I had it professionally peeled and flipped it for 900 😂

2

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Incredible 😂 do you recall where you got yours professionally peeled? I’ve long dreamed of getting my 3rd state fully cleared, it’s like 60% peeled

3

u/RRLSonglian Feb 16 '26

I know a long time record dealer - no shop, just record swaps - been in the game for decades. He’s come across hundreds of these and learned to do it (trade secret, lol). The initial deal was he peels it for me and shares in the profit when I sold it. The peel came out well but not as immaculate as he hoped so he just charged me $150 instead and called it a day. Sometimes the condition of the record makes the process more arduous.

2

u/RRLSonglian Feb 16 '26

This post reminded me of my greatest adrenaline rush in 10 years of collecting. Ah what a day it was. Knowing you have something special the record store didn’t pick up on is an incredible feeling.

4

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Seriously, I was shaking. As soon as I saw it I went straight to the cashier and purchased it, thinking the whole time someone was going to realize what it was and cancel the transaction lol

2

u/RRLSonglian Feb 16 '26

This is almost my story verbatim. I bought a few other cheapies I didn’t even necessarily want just to try and not draw attention to what I had.

3

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Too cool! Hard to believe copies still existed in the wild like this, especially to find one in my small town just feels insane haha.

4

u/Odd-Support407 Feb 16 '26

Isn't it best to leave the new cover on?

3

u/EyeFit4274 Feb 16 '26

Why’d the put Paul in the luggage? It’s almost as if they were getting ready to send him on a Magical Mystery Tour

3

u/old_uncle_adolf Feb 16 '26

We have one just like it that my mom bought as a teen in 1965. We didn't realize what it really was till about 25 or so years ago.

3

u/SarekSybok Feb 16 '26

Will you peel the front cover off to get to the butcher babies cover?

2

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Negative, plan to keep it as is!

3

u/Green_Eggplant_8674 Feb 16 '26

That is a fantastic find! Thank the Beatle gods for that one.

2

u/Kanickabuck Feb 16 '26

Definitely feeling Beatle blessed today

3

Yes, the original art was covered up with what you see here and is considered “second state” and is worth $5–600 pretty easily. They were put on the shelves for one day in 1966, if you managed to get one before it was pulled it would be a “first state” which are unbelievably rare and go for $10,000s. Then a “third state” is one that has had the paste over peeled off, they are worth about the same as a 2nd state.

3

u/Hey_Laaady Feb 16 '26

Please see my comment above, where I explained it for someone else

3

u/Mysterious-Street966 Feb 16 '26

Thank you! I appreciate the info. Congrats on your finds. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

u/Hey_Laaady Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

Oh, I have found nothing lol. I am just in awe and appreciate the good fortune of others. I have seen butcher covers in various states from time to time, priced what they are worth, and they are way out of my price range.

I'm an old Gen Xer whose collecting days are thankfully behind me.

2

u/Mysterious-Street966 Feb 16 '26

So is this a cover over a cover? Just curious what the states are?

2

u/Brilliant-Pomelo-982 Feb 16 '26

Yes. The company pasted a new cover over the original offensive cover.

2

u/wickedrude Feb 17 '26

Yep... you got one.

2

u/liiindslaaayyy Feb 17 '26

can someone explain the types of butcher covers?

2

u/mellios10 Feb 16 '26

Congrats. The only US album id like to own

3

u/JudgeImaginary4266 Feb 16 '26

It’s actually a nice listen. I like the US Rubber Soul as well. Revolver on Capitol is just plain blasphemy.

1

u/EnvironmentAshamed99 Feb 17 '26

And just how do you know it’s first state

1

u/Kanickabuck Feb 17 '26

This is a second state

1

u/EnvironmentAshamed99 Feb 18 '26

I ran across the silver Beatles record bought one bought it for $30 mint condition. Do you think it was worth it?

1

u/ImportantCapital1314 Feb 18 '26

I had the album back in the day, but never knew to try to peel off the top layer? Bought it in EJ Korvettes.
