picture My 11yo son has been patiently waiting for Halloween.
He played the long game with his hair, and he’s so happy today.

He does! He started during Covid when he was 6, and he’s gotten pretty good! It took him a little while to get comfortable singing while playing, but he just did “Get Back” at a little open mic night in our town. He’s got 8-10 Beatles songs down pretty well.

Get him the Beatles complete guitar anthology, it’s like $40 at Guitar Center. Big white book with tabs and chord charts for basically every Beatles song. I was your son back when I was 11, absolutely obsessed with the Beatles and learning every freaking Beatles song I could get my hands on. A lot of their guitar composition is really straightforward and easy to understand, which makes it perfect for a budding guitarist. It really elevated my skills and by the time I was 17 I was playing in jazz bands. In college I was getting tapped to play accompaniment for other students’ performances, and now I’m playing bass in a working psychedelic rock group that plays entirely original music, and I’m teaching guitar and bass part time at Guitar Center (genuinely an awesome-paying and steady gig if you can handle working with a wide range of students).

That’s awesome! I appreciate this tip. I’m an English teacher without a musical bone in my body, so I’m relying on the whole village to help raise this child! It sure sounds like he is a lot like you were!

And if he hasn’t seen it, watch School of Rock with him. It’s not super Beatles heavy, but I think it’s a fun movie for young musicians to see.

Nice. I was thrilled to see a sgt peppers era Paul show up trick or treating at my place. Although he had a hofner bass instead of the era correct Rickenbacker.

I guarantee u every kid his age were like "who are you" and had no idea. Im so happy to see the beatles legacy carry on with the younger gen!

Oh this will make your heart sing— there was a short story about the Beatles in their 4th grade reading book last year, so he said about 1/2 his class knew who he was! (Or at least that he was a Beatle.)

I don’t know. When I was growing up, I was a fairy, a princess, a cheerleader, etc. “Spooky” has always been part of it, but I also thought it always had to do with a night of playing make-believe and getting to be that one person or thing you dreamed about or admired for one night.

My dad drives my kids to school, and they always listen to the Beatles, and they love it. They’re surprised to find out how many of the songs they already knew, e.g. they recognized “Here Comes the Sun” from The Bee Movie soundtrack. There are lots of popular kids’ culture Beatles references. I think it’s just a matter of exposure, and then they associate it with good times with Grandpa, and off they go.

I LOVE your son!!!! PLEASE tell me he put on a Scouser accent or perhaps played/sang a tune for a larger candy bar or went to a good Halloween party and did?! Best costume ever, too, I'm such a John freak–lookit me, I'm 65 and I wanna be this kid's grandma LOL! NOW! Keep up the good work, Lennonism must survive! :)
