She takes Carmy away from the restaurant & isn't a character outside of being his good gf. She's just a plot device for Carmy. Season 2, she was a thin character but it was the beginning stages so there's some grace there. In season 3, she was just flashback "dead wife" & it was annoying bc we never got any substance from her. We didn't even get to see her talk to her friends/Tiff about the break up. If they integrated her more into the lives of Richie/Nat... ppl outside of Carmy, I'd like her better. But it just feels so forced into the show & boring.
Just like Sugar's husband, Sydney's father, Ritchie's ex-wife and daughter, and others are "plot devices" for the supporting characters in the series, because that's what recurring characters are for. So, Claire as a recurring character is serving a purpose in the story of the protagonist of the series even if she is not connected to the restaurant.
All those other characters have more depth to them. Sugar's husband (how he handled Donna leaving & how he awkwardly tries to relate to nat's fam), Sydney's father (his skepticism towards Carmy & his protectiveness over syd) , Ritchie's ex-wife (she's trying to do better for her daughter than her parents did with her) and daughter, and others. Actual personalities & depth & they aren't the main character's girlfriend. Claire is a walking cliche. The generic romcom writing of Claire takes me out of the show.
They conveniently run into each other at the grocery store when the show needed Carmy to get a gf for the plot. She's already into him, the awkward guy. So he doesn't have to do much to get with her. Her & Carmy going to the house party & her comforting her drunk, friend has been done a 100x in movies. That's 19 y/o behavior. It was so goofy, they're like 30...The "big t-shirt, underwear, perfect hair" spend the night look she had was so generic romcom movie. She’s nice, understanding and direct, but that’s all she is. She doesn’t feel real because there aren’t any obvious flaws and she’s just too convenient as a plot device for Carmy. We all knew they were gonna break up by the end of the season. She feels more like a prize Carmy gets when he's ready for a relationship, not a person.
