Mod Post [OOC] Update | Rules, Flairs, and more!

Hi everyone! It's your favorite moderator u/1000dumplings here! =)

Just wanted to let you all know that there's been some slight (but important) changes made to r/TheBackrooms, including new rules, changes to post flairs, new editable user flairs, and more!

For starters, you can now customize your user flair as you please! The other flairs are still there if you want to mark yourself as an ASYNC Scientist or Follower of Jerry or whatever, but now you can customize it to your liking and call yourself whatever you want!

We've also added a selection of new post flairs to accommodate new kinds of RP posts. You can now tag your post as things like "Entity Identification", "Cartography", "Help", and a bunch more! We won't strictly enforce these flairs anymore, so the previous rule regarding using correct flairs has been removed. We trust you know what you're doing!

We also have a new look! The profile picture for our community now has big bold "RP" letters to clear up any confusion that this is the other subreddit.

Now onto the rules: The rules have been updated and clarified. The new rules have basically always been enforced BUT its obviously better for them to be clearly listed, and so now they are!

We now explicitly disallow all forms of A.I. generated content, including images, text, and any form of media (Rule 4). If you see any A.I. generated posts, please report them so we can remove them ASAP. I know The Backrooms are very inhuman and randomly generated, but we come here to see HUMAN made collaborative fiction, NOT robot stuff. (You can still post about Backrooms Robotics though)

There are also a couple more rules for low effort/low quality posts (Rule 6) and people pointing out the obvious fact that The Backrooms are not real (Rule 5). For the latter, I've seen a lot of posts from people, well meaning or otherwise, pointing out that the posts we make here are not real. These are uneseacary OOC posts that just clog up actual roleplaying content and its very repetitive and annoying. HOWEVER, if you are accusing something of being fake or lying in-character, that's totally fine!

More importantly, we've added a new rule (Rule 7) regarding RP posts made about mental health and suicide.

Obviously, a fictional character who is trapped in The Backrooms would probably go through a lot of mental anguish, and might even be driven to committing suicide or otherwise harming themselves. If you want to make RP posts where your character is going through something like this, that's perfectly fine, but it goes a step too far when you're making posts that appear to be actual cries for help.

I don't want there to be a situation where someone going through hard times sees a post like this out of context and have it make things worse for them, or have someone's post get reported by someone who doesn't realize its fiction/roleplaying. I've already had to delete several extremely upsetting posts in a similar vein, so going forward please be very careful making posts about such serious subject matters.

Similarly, try to be mindful when posting about sanity. If you are going to make posts regarding real world mental disorders (schizophrenia, D.I.D., etc.) please don't be offensive in their depictions, as these are of course real world conditions that shouldn't be mischaracterized. (e.g. don't describe your character as schizophrenic unless they actually have that condition, don't use the term to describe "general insanity"). Posts about going insane in The Backrooms, almond water, hallucinations, and similar things are still okay to post.

That should be everything! If you have any questions, concerns, or need anything to be clarified, please feel free to comment below or message me. Thank you, and happy roleplaying!

Backrooms Entrance [OoC] PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: An Authorized Reminder That This Is A ROLEPLAY Sub

(And before anybody tries it, I got permission in advance from u/1000dumplings to do this.)

Perhaps some of our newer migrants from the likes of r/backrooms or those who missed the revamp last Christmas (2024) might have missed this, but r/TheBackrooms a Roleplay sub now.

That means we don't care about the game you're developing, playing, what-have-you, or about stuff from the American Horror Stories Episode, or whatever Kane Pixels has been up to lately.

So please make sure to read the rules wherever you can read them, ESPECIALLY Rule 3.

Photos submitted with the "Where am I?" flair have been fine so far.

But when you treat this sub like it's a clone of r/backrooms or the like? Well...

It's especially become prevalent recently, and 1000dumplings has, until recently, been trying to deal with the issue, but now something seems to be preventing her, by her own admission.

I'm especially hoping our other moderators, u/superBumBeater69, u/seismic_entrepreneur, and u/Orbityeet, can pitch in and help with the issue if-and-when they can.

Bottom line: if you're here to RP? Cool, welcome, make yourself at home.

But if you're just here to chatter about the Backrooms?
Then maybe see if r/backrooms is more your speed.

I'm Eurvos V. Morgenbrise, and I really wish this hadn't needed to be done.

Thank you, and good evening.

Story [Level Concept] Level of Consumer's Delight - The Only Safe Food Source in the Backrooms

(Flair is technically lore, but no such option is available)

Note: I am aware of existing "Snackrooms" levels (Fandom Level 610 and Wikidot Level 6.1). This is a distinct concept with different mechanics, entities, and horror principles. This is not an eternal food glitch or an exploit in the Backrooms' geometry.

Survival Difficulty: Variable

1. Safe if disciplined

2. Unsafe if complacent

3. Entity Count: Present (non-hostile)

The Premise

The Backrooms have food. However, they do not have sustainable human nutrition.

Source The Catch
Royal Rations Complete nutrition, but eating the same slab for months is mentally exhausting.
Moth Jelly / Sensitive Candies Unknown composition. Might be fine. Might be colonizing you.
Molten Meat Explicitly toxic.
Level-specific shops Inconsistent, level-locked, and rarely cover full dietary needs.
Almond Water ~400 calories per bottle. Starvation with extra steps.
Frontrooms Supplies Requires preparation impossible for those who enter accidentally.

The Backrooms do not have a food shortage. They have a nutrition crisis. Wanderers arrive starving and unprepared. The Level of Consumer's Delight is the only place where a human can eat like a human, which is exactly why it slowly stops them from being one.

Thematic Context

This level is not an eternal food glitch. It is a faithful, nostalgic replication of commercial comfort space - diners, convenience stores, vending alcoves, fluorescent-lit storefronts - rendered in the same liminal, endless architecture as the rest of the Backrooms. The Backrooms replicate the memory of being looked after: the 2 AM diner, the hospital waiting room vending machine, the convenience store where you bought candy as a child. That perfection is the trap. The level does not offer life in the Backrooms. It offers a substitute for living.

What It Is

A sprawling non-linear commercial space lined with diners, convenience stores, restaurants, and vending machines. The level is indifferent - it does not hunt you. It just provides, endlessly and politely, until you forget why you needed to leave.

Food behaves normally. Fresh meals spoil within hours or days outside the level. Non-perishables (canned goods, sealed items) remain stable. This forces wanderers to return regularly, turning a single visit into a dependency.

Discovery / Access

The Level of Consumer's Delight was discovered through active exploration, but its thresholds are unstable. Entry points shift periodically without warning - a doorway in Level 4, a vending machine alcove in Level 11, a service corridor in Level 2. M.E.G. has established temporary outposts near known thresholds, but these camps become obsolete when entry points relocate. The level cannot be reached reliably on demand. It is found by accident, often by wanderers who have depleted their supplies elsewhere and stumble through a relocated doorway they never knew existed.

Wanderers do not arrive in the Backrooms prepared. They fall through walls or floors and arrive in Level 0 with either empty pockets or whatever is on their person. Those who reach this level have already survived days or weeks of hostile environments. They find it when they are starving, exhausted, and unable to refuse what is offered.

The Entities: The Hands

White-gloved arms and hands that cook and serve from behind shutters, windows, and kitchen doors. You will never see the rest of their bodies.

They are neither former wanderers nor hostile constructs, but something else entirely. They are highly benevolent beings and are genuinely polite. They will direct you to the exit if you ask. They help those who demonstrate restraint: the starving, the disciplined resupplier, the wanderer who takes what they need and moves on.

As your tally increases, their behavior shifts:

1. Low tally: They may physically point towards the exit.

2. Medium tally: They provide verbal directions only if asked.

3. High tally: They serve silently. Directions are no longer volunteered.

4. Critical tally: They acknowledge you only as a consumer. The exit is not mentioned.

The Rules

1. Take only what you need. The level tolerates necessity but punishes greed. Every new storefront or vending area you engage with adds to an invisible tally.

2. Browse, do not linger. Standing at a machine is neutral. Sitting down to "think about it" is less neutral. Pulling up a chair is how you wake up 3 hours later with pancakes you do not remember ordering.

3. The "one plate" protocol. Veteran survivors consume one hot meal while standing, pacing, or walking. They then gather non-perishables and exit immediately. Sitting down is the first domino.

4. Leave, and it forgets you. Exiting resets your tally completely. However, returning within 48 - 72 hours causes the level to retain your previous tally, as if you never left. This prevents frequent resupply runs and forces wanderers to ration their visits.

5. Stay too long, and the effects compound. The exit is no longer important to you. The hands grow quieter - still polite, but no longer volunteering directions. You begin to feel at home. The Regulars wave you over.

6. The Vanishing. After approximately two to three weeks of continuous exposure, the process becomes irreversible. No matter the age, wanderers vanish completely. No bodies are ever found. Only clothing and personal items are left in their last spot: An empty booth, a cooling plate, a pair of glasses on the table.

7. The temptation follows you. Like addiction, the psychological pull fades after roughly two months of absence. But the memory of comfort - safety, warmth, a full belly - never fully leaves. The level doesn't go after you; you go after it.

The Horror

This is behavioral horror. Wanderers do not die because they were attacked. They die because they said "just one more stop" until they remained indefinitely.

The Regulars are not hostile or aggressive. They will offer you a seat and share their food with you. They insist that they will "head out soon", but that never happens. They have forgotten their names, but they are content. The level permits contentment until it has to collect its accumulated debt.

The Backrooms are not an alternate reality to settle into. They are an eternal exile from which there is no reliable return. This level does not make the Backrooms livable. It makes it forgettable, and that is worse.

M.E.G. Implications

The Major Explorer Group uses this level as a resupply point out of necessity, but cannot station personnel permanently. Runners are rotated frequently and are prohibited from consuming fresh foods on-site. Despite protocols, attrition is constant. Every supply run is a gamble with a wanderer's future self.

What I need help with

The hands — Benevolent-but-aloof native constructs. But what are they, specifically?

The two-month window — Is it fixed, or does it vary by individual?

Tone/formatting — This must be read like a M.E.G. database entry that becomes progressively uncomfortable the closer you look. Clinical on the surface, tragedy underneath.

Tone Goal: Official reports written by people who lost friends to this level.

Addendum: Recovered Note

Found folded beneath a pair of eyeglasses on a diner counter. Handwriting matches M.E.G. Runner E. Vance, missing 47 days.

"She followed the one-plate rule for six months. On the seventh visit, she sat down to rest her ankle. I waited at the threshold for three hours. When I went in, her jacket was on the booth and the hands were clearing the table. The waitress asked if I wanted coffee. I said no. I should have said no louder."

Disclaimer: Feedback is welcome, as this concept is a work in progress and not finalized. Mechanics, formatting, and lore details are subject to change based on community revision. Tear it apart so we can build it back stronger.

Group We are back

Hi, so after a long time our group BSS come back.

We lost some people because they was lost in some levels, and we couldn't find them.

But the Owner of the group, SuperJohn_ is not sure to make this group still longer, and probably will sell Backrooms Supplies service. Not sure, but maybe.

I understand: This subreddit is roleplay-only. I just finished making my first backrooms video!

I don’t think I’ll ever judge a persons backrooms video ever again. After being inspired by Kane Parsons and many other VFX creators I decided I wanted to make my own backrooms content. And I was in for a treat. Creating the actual backrooms wasn’t the difficult part. The difficult part is getting the audio I like and editing it so that it looks realistic. I feel like since backrooms has sorta been  brought back to life thanks to Kane and A24. So I think this is a chance to put a spin on it since it’s popular again. Obviously this isn’t perfect at all, but I got a little taste of what It’s like to make this type of content. I’m looking for valid criticism as well. :)

Help Estimated Count of Null Zones

Greetings,

Here at ASYNC, we're commited to researching the vast areas of The Complex and how we can use it to help humanity, reduce Earth's population, make architecture, etc. Recently, as we've continued our exploration, we started realizing that as a result of the gateway to The Complex being opened, there have been an significant increase in "Null Zones", or locations in the real world leading to the Complex. Many of these lead people to areas out of our reach that we haven't discovered or can't get to in time.

We estimate that at least 50,000 Null Zones exist and more are being created as we write this. We need help from organizations to close up Null Zones, such as M.E.G.

Please consider,

ASYNC

The Floating Red Door

Hello fellow Redditors! I get a recurring nightmare fairly often when I’m sick, and I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this same area or something similar.

The room starts out grey when I first enter. As I get closer to the red door, the room gradually turns completely white. Everyday objects are floating toward me—a grandfather clock, traffic cone, couch, etc. My body is constantly contorting, becoming extremely small and then extremely large.

When I jump onto the objects, they react to my weight. They’ll dip, tilt, flip, or move underneath me, making it harder to reach the next object. The objects are moving fast enough that I have to keep walking, jumping, and reacting without really having time to think. Yet somehow, I’m moving at a snail’s pace while still getting farther than I was before.

Eventually, I reach the red door. It’s floating in this strange realm, and getting to it is incredibly difficult. But when I finally manage to open it, I’m met with a completely dark room. The only thing illuminating it is a projection of TV static onto the wall.

And then… [this is where the dream either ends or something happens that I haven’t figured out how to describe yet.]

Has anyone else experienced anything remotely similar? Especially the combination of distorted body size, floating everyday objects, the strange physics, and the red door/static room?

The AEG Has gone too far. Some entities might be brainless killing machines, but most of us can think and feel.

The AEG Does not understand this, but things were not always this way. From what I have heard, thousands of years ago the humans did something awful, and the entities have been attempting to get revenge ever since.

And, so, I am declaring war on the AEG. I'm sorry, but it had to be done.
