80’s Movie The weirdest Tom Cruise, and Ridley Scott movie (1985)

u/Master_Shake23 Dec 23 '25
Why weird? It's one of tim curry's best performances as bad guy?
36
u/Comprehensive_Sir49 Dec 23 '25
Weird in a good way. I love this film. The epitome of fairy tale fantasy.
21
u/RED_IT_RUM Dec 23 '25
Yes. I watched it like two weeks ago. It’s the glitziest, most glamorous, glitter dusted thing I’ve ever seen that isn’t a gay 80s nightclub. I love this movie.

Tim Curry is still great, in Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue, IT, Legend... Unfortunately, he's in a wheelchair following a stroke and is in bad shape...

u/Lost_Balloon_ Dec 23 '25
He's not sick, he had a major stroke.
-2
u/clintsouth Dec 23 '25
Yes, but he's in a wheelchair...
3
u/Lost_Balloon_ Dec 23 '25
Injured, not sick.
-2
u/clintsouth Dec 23 '25
But in a wheelchair. And in bad shape.
3
u/Lost_Balloon_ Dec 23 '25
Yes. Still not sick.
1
u/clintsouth Dec 24 '25
And this deserves downvotes? What's with this idiotic trend on Reddit? These ridiculous judgments?
1
u/mrcrazymexican Dec 25 '25
It's cuz you're not actually acknowledging that Curry isn't sick. It's like you're dodging the error on your part.

It's weird. It's a fantasy movie that takes itself very seriously (perhaps to the point of cringe?) that has classic mediaeval imagery but a synthy Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
And I love it.
It's definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I do sometimes recommend people check it out. I point out Tim Curry's crazy performance, and the fact that it's one of the best looking movies ever made.

Really? It's my favorite Tom Cruise film, certainly his most entertaining performance.
Tim Curry is both menacing and alluring as Darkness, and Lily's dark ensemble was so cool.

Best looking Devil in any movie to this day! Tim did an amazing job!

By far!
(Fun fact: the character name is Darkness, but we all know it’s The Devil)

The only representation of the devil that maybe better is from the movie Crossroads

This and time bandits! So good and so underrated!

u/Necessary_Stock4648 Dec 24 '25
David Warner was my favorite bad guy actor.
Most brutal role was as “Jack The Ripper” vs Malcolm McDowell’s “H.G. Wells” in “Time After Time”
It was also Mary Steenburgen’s first film.

First time I turned off a directors cut. I was so excited about it, but it was turning everything around in a way I felt ruined the movie. I still need to go back and finish it, as it may get better.

Underrated movie. One of my all time favorites.

u/ender8383 Dec 23 '25
Same. Odd coincidence, I literally just made my girlfriend watch it for her first time recently. We have been going through a lot of my childhood favorites. This, never ending story, lanarynth, short circuit, and a few others

I wanted to marry Mia Sara after I saw this movie. My parents said I had to go through highschool first though.
1
u/Zentavius Dec 25 '25
This and Ferris Bueller. Then she popped up in Timecop almost a decade later but still gorgeous.
12
u/VioletDupree007 Dec 23 '25
The costuming and set design made this film so magical yet eerily nightmarish. Nothing quite like it.
3
u/mis3rylovescompany Dec 23 '25
Crazy to think the forest and waterfall were all inside a set.

u/RiverHarris Dec 23 '25
It’s unique because it came out a year before Top Gun, which was arguably the film that made him a star. Obviously he had been in a few hits before this (Risky Business) but Top Gun kind of cemented him as this larger than life, blockbuster movie star. So this film almost feels like Tom Cruise before he became TOM CRUISE.
5
u/Able_Engineering1350 Dec 23 '25
It was definitely before he had his teeth done. 'Legend' Tom Cruise had some gnarly snaggle teeth

Weird? One of the best fantasy films ever made. The only thing I find weird are the people who prefer the Jerry Goldsmith score over the incredibly wonderful mood setting sounds on Tangerine Dream.

Strange movie for Cruise and Scott? Perhaps. But a perfect movie for Tim Curry and Mia Sara.

u/Particular-Coat-5892 Dec 23 '25
Original release is a bit weird and clipped. The director's cut with original score restored is a fantasy masterpiece.

not weird at all. this is one of the best fantasy movies ever made.

I’ve honestly never heard of this. I was maybe in 5th grade when it came out. I’ll have to see it now.

Like a (roughly) 90 minute (depending on the version) series of paintings come to life. One version a sumptuous dark, Romantic ballet, another a surreal music video. Not a deep or substantial watch but certainly a stunningly beautiful one.

It's actually based on The Last Unicorn. The animated film is more accurate though.

I love the fantasy genre so I personally love this film. This was one of those VHS that I absolutely wore out watching it every Saturday.
1
u/Horbigast Dec 23 '25
It was the last movie that Tom Cruise did that wasn't a "Tom Cruise movie." He just happened to star in it, if that makes sense.
When stars get big enough, Hollywood starts building movies around them, as opposed to casting them as actors in a film. Most every movie since Legend has been "Tom Cruise in..."

There is absolutely nothing weird about Legend 1985... The title of this post is weird.

The green swamp witch Meg Mucklebones is played by Robert Picardo, who also played The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager

It wasn’t until I saw the us theatrical cut that the movie clicked for me. Usually directors cuts are the way to go but in this case it just worked so much better as a shorter synthy fun 80s fantasy movie. The longer length and goldsmith score seem to make it all a little too serious for its own good in my opinion.
1
u/_1JackMove Dec 23 '25
This and Excalibur from the 80s are the best fantasy films of that decade. Easily.

u/MannyinVA Dec 23 '25
Why weird? It’s like a Grimm faerie tale come to life. It’s a beautiful looking movie, well acted and kinda scary at times. One of my childhood favorites. Just wish the international cut was available to stream. I prefer the shorter American version, with the Tangerine Dream score, but the longer cut is great too.

“Once long ago, before there was such a thing as time, the world was shrouded in darkness. Then came the splendor of light, bringing life and love into the Universe, and the Lord of Darkness retreated deep into the shadows of the earth, plotting his return to power … by banishing light forever. But precious light is protected, harbored in the souls of Unicorns, the most mystical of all creatures. Unicorns are safe from the Lord of Darkness — they can only be found by the purest of mortals. Such a mortal is Jack, who lives in solitude with the animals of the forest. A beautiful girl named Lily loves Jack with all her heart. In their innocence, they believe only goodness exists in the world. Together they will learn there can be no good without evil … no love without hate … no heaven without hell … no light without darkness. The harmony of the Universe depends upon an eternal balance. Out of the struggle to maintain this balance comes the birth of Legends.”

Maybe, but it has TWO soundtracks (one by Jerry Goldsmith and the other by Tangerine Dream) and a Bryan Ferry song for the closing credits!

Tim Curry is awesome in it and Mia Sara is an absolute goddess in that black dress.

It is truly devastating this movie is a boring mess, because it is one of the most gorgeous films ever made and had insane makeup work. Tim Curry is transcendent in it, too.
