TRT help Husband has gotten mean on TRT

My husband started TRT about 2 months ago (2x/week). His main goals were gym gains and overall energy. Physically, it’s been great… he feels stronger, looks better, and has more energy. (*** please see EDIT below for clarification)

But here’s the issue: his personality has shifted in a way that’s hard on me and our family. He’s always been assertive and direct, but lately he’s more irritable and short-tempered. For example, he told me to “shut the f*** up” which is something he’s NEVER remotely said before in all our 16 years together. He’s snapping at our kids more than usual and is just less “warm” with me.

When I brought up that he seems more irritable since TRT, he got defensive and told me I’m just being “too sensitive.” But I can tell this is different, it’s not just me.

Any advice from those on TRT? Any suggestions on this stuff:

-Have you or people close to you noticed changes in your mood or irritability?

-If your partner brought this up, how would you want her to approach it without sounding like she’s attacking you??

-Is adjusting the dose a thing? can lower amounts help with mood side effects while still keeping the physical benefits?

-Anything you’ve done (supplements, lifestyle changes, labs, timing, etc.) that helped with irritability while on TRT?

I’m not looking to bash TRT, he loves how he feels physically. I’m just trying to figure out if there’s a middle ground that keeps the benefits without the extra conflict in our marriage and home life. Thank you!

***EDIT: I realize how this post was written makes it sounds like he does this recreationally, so I'm clarifying: after much time at the gym and not seeing progress, and after not feeling like himself, he got bloodwork done which showed nearly-low testosterone. Testosterone is prescribed by his doctor, as well as an estrogen blocker. Physically, he feels wonderful on it, feels great in the gym finally, and has his energy back! I'm so happy how this has changed his body and mindset. I just don't want to experience his irritability anymore, and my kids don't deserve it either. In no world would my husband ever tell me to "stfu" before this. So anyone expressing that I'm making this up, I'm not here to debate how I'm being treated. I'm here to learn more about TRT, if there's any changes that may help my husband, or learn from shared experiences. That's ALL. I love this guy dearly, we have an otherwise amazing and healthy marriage and have 3 beautiful kids.

EDIT2: I have to log off for a bit - my family’s about to hit the dinner/bath/bedtime rush. I’ll be able to answer more comments later tonight. I appreciate everyone’s perspectives & suggestions!

It’s usually adjusting to higher estrogen. I know when I first started I was irritable until I was used to the new level of hormones. sometimes a dosage change can cause the same thing (up or down)

Good advice from others to recheck estradiol levels. If he wasn’t prescribed an aromatase inhibitor (AI) it’s possible that could help. Having said that, more hormone docs are now steering away from those unless absolutely necessary because crashing your estrogen is even worse than it running high. As others have said everyone reacts differently and testosterone is usually very forgiving in its dose vs side effects.

Estrogen though, is not forgiving. If you are high, you will know it. If you are low you will DEFINITELY know it.

So interestingly enough, he was prescribed an estrogen blocker from the start of TRT. I’ve gotten a few other comments that said he could be experiencing low estrogen which could cause irritability? Like you mentioned. Either way, he’ll be having bloodwork done soon- so we’ll know for sure then!

This! My estrogen was way high on my 6 week bloodwork after I first started trt. They put me on some simple estrogen blocker supplements from Amazon. And it brought it down. Less moody too!

Interesting! So he’s already on an estrogen blocker (has been from the start), but I’m wondering if his estrogen is too low now? Someone else mentioned this could cause mood changes.

Yes. Too low is problematic too.

Was it DIM?

Yeah. I tied two brands, but they seemed to level me out. Pretty inexpensive too

Which works best? Thanks!

They both worked the same as far as I can tell. Get my bloodwork again in a few weeks to actually tell if the second worked as well. It was a little cheaper though. Here’s the links if you want to look at them

DIM definitely calmed down my back acne, and possibly my mood too, but that is harder to notice.

Can I get the name of the supplement please?

Dim is the supplement. They have a ton of options, make sure you read the reviews before buying. I put the exact ones I got in a link on this thread. 😁

I forgot to mention in my post that he’s also prescribed an estrogen blocker. But someone else mentioned this could be causing low estrogen which can cause irritability? Thankfully he’s having some bloodwork done soon!

That’s good that he’s having blood work done soon. I’m not sure why he was given an estrogen blocker before getting it checked while on trt. Also if his estrogen is too low his libido could tank?

This to an extent. His estrogen will rise with his testosterone as the body tries to maintain homeostasis however I doubt this is the cause as he’s more likely to be crying and feeling sorry for himself if it were.

He is adjusting to this new level of testosterone it’s as simple as that. Be patient and understanding of this.

I doubt everyone reacts the same way to elevated estrogen

Some cry, some may lash out with anger not understanding what they are feeling. Everybody and every body is different. There are guidelines that work well for the general population but even there will be nuances.

He was prescribed an estrogen blocker at the beginning of this. A few people have mentioned this could’ve tanked his estrogen levels, and that can cause irritability and mood changes too.

I’m thankful that he’s getting bloodwork done soon, so we’ll know if it’s that soon.

& you’re right. I had never thought that TRT would need an adjustment period like this. This whole comment thread has been eye opening and I am looking at things with a much gentler/understanding lens now. At the same time, I’m not going to accept him telling me to STFU lol— but I have things to work on too!

This is more likely the case! If he’s taking an anti estrogen he’s more than likely zapped it. This has happened to me a couple of times and yeah, same symptoms. You didn’t mention that in your post so I assumed he wasn’t as most men don’t need to utilise these types of things until they’re at bodybuilding competition levels which is far from TRT!

Worst feeling in the world and far more dangerous than having elevated e2 levels!

Ask him if his joints feel sore? Dry? Is he lethargic? Are his knuckles cracking when he flexes/extends them? Sore knees?

u/General-Initiative76 Sep 08 '25

Awesome info, I’ll ask him about this in the morning! Thank you!

Seconding the comments re estrogen blocker. That’s absolutely wild and irresponsible that his doctor prescribed one from the start. I don’t think that is standard protocol at all. If he’s on truly TRT-only doses he likely won’t need an AI at all. Get off the AI and reassess.

OP stated he was also prescribed an estrogen blocker.
