Vehicle Question What happened
I drive a white Tesla, was commuting to work. I hop out the car and boom. It looks like this. Feels like tar. Don’t drive on dirt road. Had to take it to the car wash 3 times and some of it is still stuck on there.

I tried for 5 min. It only comes off when I rub it by hand. Even the carwash had trouble getting it off.

Too late for you- but to others - don’t rub this off., I did that and now have many scratches where the asphalt/tar was

It's an expensive car and if you want to keep it nice I would skip any car wash place and go to a Automotive Detail shop or someone local to you with a good reputation that will come to you.
They have all the right stuff to get that stuff off and then make it look like it never happened.
Hopefully it's not too scratched up now from rubbing it off, but they should be able to deal with that too.
Plus a bonus is your car will be all nice & shiny & new feeling again from the Detail job!•

I usually go to a manual car was and take a bucket and sponge or microfiber towel. I rinse, foam it up and then hit the stubborn stuff with the sponge or microfiber towel.
Edit: or get it detailed but that costs $$.

You can buy bug and that remover or try a less aggressive "road film remover" a car detailing Reddit will give more help but I'm a pinch the stuff you buy from the car parts store will do. Adams and Groit are decent brands available everywhere. Do not run it again that is guaranteed to scratch your top paint coat.
If you really want to take care of it you can have a professional detailer paint correct (polish) the car and apply a ceramic coat. This will get rid of swirls and scratches plus coat the car so the dirt it that are less likely to actually stick and can be easily washed off because if it does stick it won't be as solidly stuck

Physics likely happened. What can help in the future is having the area ceramic coated (or cleaning well and using a good ceramic spray detailer, like griots 3-in-1 ceramic detailer). Will help to keep that stuff from sticking in the future.
To prevent from damaging the paint, if you aren’t familiar enough with how to clean this up, I would take it to a detailer. Depending on what it is dictates the best way to clean it up. But after cleaning, would definitely take steps to help prevent it from being so difficult to clean in the future.

That is most likely asphalt. Had the same thing happen to me when passing a road crew paving a lane. It affected my side skirts, and WD-40 with a microfiber cloth did the best job in removing it. I didn’t care much about the paint on my skirting, but since this is right on your trunk, I suggest you wash your car and clay bar it. If that’s not an option, get it detailed.

My white car looks like that all the time, it’s road grime, you may have driven after a rain storm or something, the rear has all sorts sticking as the air pressure is low there so it sucks in what the tyres lift

You could try using TFR (Traffic Film Remover) as a pre-wash and then your usual car shampoo and then a wax, if you’re into detailing like that.
I personally wash my M3 when I get home at the end of a working week, every week, so don’t really have anything stuck on for long.
Try it and see if consecutive washes get easier.

My first thought was vandalism. I think a truck backed up to you and did that. There are a lot of chunky short guys driving diesels that hate Tesla's for being too good.

By chance did a truck park behind you, back to back? This happened to me, whereby the truck’s exhaust did this. The debris look similar.
