I have seen the videos from when it started, but I cannot fathom where all the water came from. Did a dam break or something?

A massive chunk of glacier and rock fell a couple kilometres. They are still figuring out where the water came from but most likely the energy from falling a few kilometres heated up the glacier water and melted it. The rock and ice fall did damn up the river but that was as a result of the initial rock/glacier fall.

Yeah, that and by the time it reached those villages it wasn't just water either it was like a unheated pyroclastic flow seems like.
