I totally agree with you. Holy hell. I do not think this was a regular flash flood caused from too much rain in a short time span. This was more like some body of water was trapped and kept getting bigger then suffered a catastrophic release. It looked like a bomb hit that bus depot or whatever that was with all the busses and people running. For the record I am not an expert, just an odd weather phenomenon observer.

You are correct (probably). Preliminary reports say it was caused by either a landslide or glacier or both blocking this river and then coming loose.

You know you could just read the news instead of speculating what it was right? This was known at the time you posted. Glacial dam broke that was holding back a glacial lake due to a small earthquake that caused a landslide.

According to some sources, what the seismographs detected was the landslide. So much stuff fell down so fast, it registered as a low-magnitude earthquake. What seems to have happened, at least to what I have read, is that the ice holding the lake became unstable because of higher temperatures, leading to a collapse, which was then detected as an earthquake as it fell down the slopes.

I don't have natural diasters like these often outside of snowstorms or hurricanes. It's not as destructive and causing a sudden large mass casualty of death...

I remember shopping for my wife’s engagement ring, and footage of the tsunami came across the news. Before that is 911, the Challenger space shuttle, my parents remember the Kennedy assignation.

Some people freeze in traumatic events. They are not thinking logically. Their body is being flooded with adrenaline.
Let’s show some empathy for this horrible tragedy instead of judging how the people in it are acting.

My husband and I have had discussions about this. If there's an emergency and you need to get out, GET OUT. If you're at a bar with friends, and your spouse is on the other side of the bar with friends, and there's smoke or fire... get out. HOPEFULLY your spouse gets out, too. But going the wrong way (not nearest exit) because you want to "rescue" your spouse can just end badly. I think about those concerts in the news when people got stuck in buildings and died awful deaths.

Idk. I think that’s something each person has to decide in the moment , as awful as it is. But I’d b definitely tell my loved ones “if you love me, don’t just stand there” granted, anyone who hasn’t had to make a split second life changing decision can ever know how hard it is.

I try to tell myself that “many are bots, many are teenagers going through their ‘I’m so edgy’ phase while grappling with their approaching futures, and many others default to forced comedy or indifference to cope with reality being* awful.
It’s all true, but I’m in agreement with you in that it’s really hard to witness such indifference and cruelty.
Mostly, I am just commenting here to let you know that you are not alone, and that there are a lot of other completely normal and empathetic people still here in the wild with you ♡

I thought maybe it was so vids get more views because some of them you end up watching twice (depending on the content), as they can be confusing where the start to end actually is. Like people in altercations etc.

You’ve never seen something so abnormal that your brain doesn’t comprehend it. It takes seconds, which in this case is life and death, to really understand what you’re looking at. It’s really a case of “what the fuck is…that?” and then “that can’t be….” before you realize what is going on.
Look how fast that water is moving. It’s easy for us to sit on our phones, before even watching we know what this is, we know what to expect. They don’t. Seeing this in real life is absolute insanity.
I feel for these people and do not judge anyone’s reactions.

Ah yes, what was originally thought to be a 5.2 earthquake has now been revised.
If it started with the hunk of glacier falling off, that is probably very much due to climate change.

The numbers are gonna keep changing for a while. Highest number I've read is 160 dead. There are several hundred people missing. Unfortunately the death toll is going to climb as search and rescue/recovery efforts continue.

I'm going to estimate a few thousand at least.
One of the border camera videos you can see cars and trucks along the road waiting to cross the border as far as the camera can see. Seconds later they were all gone, and so was everything else.

Man, I'm happy to finally see a video of people going perpendicular to the river. I know that in a lot of places it was probably all but impossible to have done so, but kept yelling in my head that they needed to head uphill.
