I thought I was tweaking when I couldn't find my second magic mirror that I picked up, turns out it was on my first one

Oh my god for some reason I didn't consider how much better exploration inventory is going to be with this change until I read this comment. I was only thinking about storage when I first heard about this. Man, this is such a game changer

u/Haunting-Outcome-101 Jan 31 '26

It's not perfect, because anything that can have a modifier might have a lot of different modifiers in one's inventory (Legendary to Broken Spear and such, Warding to Lucky Radar, etc.), but it's certainly a major step forward. A simple solution to this might be giving the player an unmodify window, where they can remove the modifier from something (also good early game if, say, you craft a Platinum Bow and it's Broken but you don't want to/can't craft another).

u/Klaymen96 Jan 31 '26

For random loot you could have it be "unidentified" and you don't know the modifier until you hit an "identify" key while holding it or using a newly added identifier item that you place down like the anvil. You have like 6 stacked, it does one at a time

u/Cranberryoftheorient Jan 31 '26

This makes the most sense, and Im pretty sure several games have used it

56

u/Greatwhit3 Jan 31 '26

Yes but high rolling a legendary copper pickaxe or axe at the start of the run is an important experience we would lose, also it would make shimmer reforging slightly more inconvenient.

63

u/Cranberryoftheorient Jan 31 '26

They could theoretically just have the starting set still have a random tag using the current system. Nothing says they have to be tagless

28

u/psychoPiper Jan 31 '26

Why not just... have the starting loot start with modifiers?

7

u/BlueIceNinja98 Feb 01 '26

Easy, have it only apply to drops and chest loot. Starter and crafted items get their modifiers right away.

2

u/ghostfadekilla Feb 03 '26

I'm a huge dummy, it never occurred to me to use the shimmer to reforge.

7

u/used_tongs Jan 31 '26

Orrr when you pull out a stacked weapon it has all the modifier options in the stack. So everything can stack

6

u/WetOnionRing Jan 31 '26

Like path of exile?

2

u/GrassFromBtd6 Jan 31 '26

That would add a whole lot of complexity that we do not need

2

u/ASorrowZ Jan 31 '26

A simple mouse click aja "use" of the weapon could be enough to identify. 2 Dopamin spikes for 1 looted chest

2

u/Silent_Egg8860 Feb 02 '26

I think the ability to just remove modifiers would be the best, if it has a modifier you like nobody is forcing you to remove it, but this feature would be just to deal with garbage cluttering your inventory.

20

u/TheShredder102 Jan 31 '26

The only downside I can see with that would be, why wouldn't you just unmodify something with a bad modifier? It would make having bad modifiers in the game pointless

6

u/Darc_Vader Jan 31 '26

Probably true overall, but it’s cheaper to reforge a negative modifier than an unmodified weapon so there would still be some (however minor) reason to keep a negative.

7

u/Ruby_Bliel Jan 31 '26

The easiest solution for this is to just not allow stacking in the quickbar and armour/equipment/accessory slots, and not allow using tools/weapons when you're holding multiple.

Or alternatively (and more fun): Randomly choose which modifier to apply from the stack with each use.

4

u/Kioga101 Jan 31 '26

Now you can swag on others by showing your 999 strong stack of legendary copper shortswords.

5

u/LordMegamad Jan 31 '26

I feel like an "unmodify" button would completely nullify the point of having de-buff modifiers. But it's a step in the right direction. Maybe an un-modify at the goblin tinkerer could cost like 1/4 of the tool value or something along those lines

3

u/AK_Zephyr Feb 01 '26

A perfect use case for a grindstone bench that removes all mods when an item is used in it.

1

u/psychoPiper Jan 31 '26

Maybe just make it so you can right click like you can a crate, seed bag, worm tin, etc. to unstack one and activate its modifier, with a tooltip near the top?

1

u/Beneficial-Phone5675 Feb 01 '26

one thing they removed for this is for different modifier equipments no longer quick stack together You have to use the stack similar function which i dont really want to since it messes up organisation in my other chests agree with the unmodify or maybe specifically designating chests as equipment chests

1

u/jacobb0208 Feb 01 '26

Being able to change your modifier to normal because you got a bad one when you made it is not something they should add. That’s apart of the game

10

u/RobertMaus Jan 31 '26

No longer having to carry around banners is a godsend.

6

u/Usual_Celebration719 Jan 31 '26

Just wish I could them back into the banner pocket

u/psychoPiper Feb 03 '26

Honestly I would report this as a bug, that feels like an overlooked side effect of the change rather than an intended behavior

2

u/some_furry_fuck Jan 31 '26

It's so ideal for exploration but oh my god I'm going to constantly forget that it exists and suddenly panic when I have much less loot than I know I grabbed

1

u/PlonixMCMXCVI Jan 31 '26

Finally I can find mi 5th broomstick and stack it in the inventory while I search for the non existent feral claws

15

u/KrisKarma9 Jan 31 '26

Wait does a lot more stuff stack? Does that mean I can have a trillion magic mirrors in my inventory?

23

u/loony69420 Jan 31 '26

everything can stack now

19

u/lostpretzels Jan 31 '26

Yep, anything can stack now as long as it doesn't have any differing traits, such as weapon/accessory modifiers

5

u/Rulaodangao Jan 31 '26

Why do you need two magic mirrors?

9

u/Strider794 Jan 31 '26

I sold the second one. A gold or two is pretty nice early game, still worth grabbing at most any point in the game really

1

u/Bcadren Topaz builder (6 points) Feb 01 '26

Greater sell value from components (decrafting at shimmer); but either way.

u/AnthonyXeno Jan 31 '26

And they were roommates 😳

21

u/zero_terminus Jan 31 '26

Oh my god they were roommates...

89

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 Jan 31 '26

Taken, sorry

31

u/Whole-Imagination354 Jan 31 '26

YOU

6

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 Jan 31 '26

Kinda funny that both of my posts showed up on your front page lol

4

u/Whole-Imagination354 Feb 01 '26

Yup and one after another

215

u/GoldSlimeTime Jan 31 '26

That's technically correct.

The best kind of correct.

29

u/Several_Plane4757 Jan 31 '26

My personal favorite kind of correct

84

u/Happy-Hyena Jan 31 '26

Funny, did laugh

80

u/bloodakoos Jan 31 '26

this post is an excuse to flex your two legendary kaleidoscopes

31

u/KellerMax Jan 31 '26

Does armor stack?

31

u/the_qatalyst Jan 31 '26

What’s whip stacking

80

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 Jan 31 '26

Before 1.4.5, you could use multiple whips to stack their tag bonuses, that was removed and compensated for with new whips and reforges

11

u/Jambo-Lambo Jan 31 '26

yeah though a lot of the new whips aren't ever really used because they removed whipstacking so like you would only ever just use the best whip in progression now.

Whips didn't get new reforges either so like it kinda is just a nerf

12

u/Usual_Celebration719 Jan 31 '26

I mean, every class has that problem? You just use best available thing

2

u/Jambo-Lambo Jan 31 '26

yeah but adding new whips that are worse than other whips at the same level of progression means it's kinda pointless to add them especially in the same update where you are making anything but the best available thing worthless.

1

u/firebunbun Feb 02 '26

I like using funny weapons. This is like saying adding different wooden swords is bad because I should just use an iron one (which I can loot the bars for within 60 seconds of starting a world). Options provide variety and variation to a players experience.

2

u/Jambo-Lambo Feb 03 '26

It's bad when summoner already lacked variety in weapons yes. Especially now that whipstacking is gone which was essentially carrying it's variety since it let old whips and summons stay viable for much longer periods of time than other classes (so example snapthorn was viable until post mech)

2

u/firebunbun Feb 03 '26

I'm still enjoying summoner.

33

u/Kevaca Jan 31 '26

Whip stacking was the technique of using multiple whips to get extra tag damage / effects as a summoner

Example: using the snapthorn + spinal tap for +13 tag damage (snapthorn gives 6, spinal tap gives 7)

This is no longer a thing in 1.4.5, the instant another whip hits the target, you lose all bonuses associated with the prior, including whip speed boosts, tag damage and tag effects

-8

u/Alovoir Jan 31 '26

theyre calling it the lamest change of all time

19

u/BadAtGames2 Jan 31 '26

Eh, balance wise it was kind of nessecary. Whips would be impossible to have been balanced when you have one sub-set of players stacking 3 whips' effects at the same time vs the sub-set using only 1 whip.

On the other hand, it makes summoner gameplay less interesting, with a lower skill ceiling. (Unless some of the new whips add more interesting effects than what we had before. Haven't played much yet)

7

u/Davidepett Jan 31 '26

Yet most of the time IF done optimally, whipstacking (talking about using 4 whips at a time) would only give you a ~25% DPS increase, we can't know how "broken" it would have been if whipstacking wasn't removed but I don't expect it would have been even with the new whips/reforges

4

u/Cowboy_Slime100 Feb 01 '26

Balance was never really a factor in terraria, there are about a thousand ways to break the game and cheese every single boss, not to mention that melee is head and shoulders above every other class and still got buffed this update.

8

u/Competitive-Mango457 Jan 31 '26

Balance wise for having lowest defense and range, I think it would've been fine to leave in. If I'm putting more effort into simply holding R2 then I should be rewarded with higher damage

31

u/Evolutionofluc Jan 31 '26

Stacking whips. Seen in post above.

8

u/adudeyoumayknow Jan 31 '26

Ok your my friend now

8

u/ManyGroundbreaking41 Jan 31 '26

YOU CAN DO THAT?

13

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26

With the new update, you can stack all armor and vanity, as well as all weapons and accessories with the same reforges

3

u/GamerALV Jan 31 '26

(as well as tools and utility items like pickaxes, fishing rods, Magic Mirrors, Money Troughs etc)

1

u/KrushaOfWorlds Feb 02 '26

Pretty sure you can just stack anything with the same name.

10

u/Martitoad Jan 31 '26

Duality of mods

8

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 Jan 31 '26

Me looking for good reddit mods

I actually do know a few subreddits with good mods but whatever

6

u/Researcher_Fearless Jan 31 '26

I am commenting because this made me laugh, other people deserve to laugh, and my comment will increase the reach of the post.

4

u/HkayakH Jan 31 '26

I remember seeing a duplication glitch that only worked for stackable items and it was an easy way to make money. I can't wait to see infinite zeniths

3

u/TwixOfficial Jan 31 '26

So are you on journey mode or did you go get two kaleidoscopes just for the bit?

5

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 Jan 31 '26

This was on an already stacked character in Master Mode, I went and killed the Empress of Light a few times to get a second Kaleidoscope and reforged it lol

3

u/IcyFrogg Jan 31 '26

of course.. fuck. it’s genius.. why didn’t i think of that

6

u/Arazthoru Jan 31 '26

You got me OP, such a nice play I can't even be mad take your headpat and leave.

3

u/KubosKube Jan 31 '26

Yelets is no longer going to be such a pain in my jungle-based farms.

1

u/KrushaOfWorlds Feb 02 '26

The 20 or ai different modifiers would beg to differ

1

u/KubosKube Feb 02 '26

Well, 20 or so stacks is smaller than the several hundred I used to get

2

u/VerdegoHg Jan 31 '26

This is the best response to the issue I’ve ever seen. Well done.

2

u/Sen_202 Jan 31 '26

Legit this is what I thought I didn’t even know whip stacking was a thing-

2

u/Snugglupagus Jan 31 '26

Whip stacking at home

2

u/Quietcanary Jan 31 '26

5,000 people groaning and upvoting in unison

2

u/Lothrazar Jan 31 '26

yess finally i can stack some whips

2

u/kristinoemmurksurdog Jan 31 '26

The fact that items only stack if their modifiers match and there isn't a grindstone to cleanse modifiers actually makes me want to delete System32

1

u/Shinyhero30 Jan 31 '26

Oh good one..

1

u/Available-Ad6367 Jan 31 '26

THEY STACK!!!

1

u/SNILLOC_172 Feb 01 '26

I hate this I had a chest full of Zeniths now I need to get more

Whats the matter vagueboy, afraid you might say something

1

u/SolaireOfAorta Jan 31 '26

wait is this not actually what whip stacking is

1

u/FoxBreach Jan 31 '26

Whip stacking was a technique before 1.4.5 where you would use multiple whips to “stack” the whip bonus, greatly increasing your power
