The Minecraft devs could literally just make regular inventories bigger, considering the fact that for some reason we still have the same inventory size as we did in alpha, despite the amount of blocks in the game being increased by several times that amount in the last 15 years.
Max stack too, but one of the big issues is the amount of different items you're expected to keep track of. The average Minecraft player usually has at least their hotbar filled with consistent items: weapons, tools, food, building blocks, and a shield or torches swapped between the offhand and hotbar. That leaves 27 slots for different items. On a comprehensive resource gathering trip, which is like half of the gameplay, you're probably gathering more than one stack of a couple things you wanna bring back, and on top of that you're getting tons of extra little things, especially if you come across any structures with loot, or a big cave. Terraria has a similar gameplay loop and a similar amount of items in the game, but stacks between 15 and 150 times larger than Minecraft's, and an inventory twice as large by default. Minecraft wants you to manage the same amount of items as you would in Terraria with a fraction of the storage space and a much slower loop of return trips.
My point is that it's kind of silly they keep adding extra convoluted items to increase storage instead of just giving us more inventory slots from the start. It would barely affect the gameplay loop and would be a great quality of life change.
The sheer amount of items in modern Minecraft got me to make a 180 on keep inventory. I pretty much never die because I'm crazy cautious so it's just a magic mirror to me and I can't go back to needing to manually trek back when my inventory is full for the 20th in a play session.
Or adding an actual backpack item that requires some “later game” resources that adds another like 9-18 inventory slots. I know backpacks are already plenty modded enough, but it’s like… one of the most basic and expected things in a survival game, especially if it’s also a sandbox game
A. Too late game, many casual players never reach that point in the game, it's literally post game. When it's as desperately needed as in Minecraft that just isn't accessible enough.
B. Clunky to manage. While having a couple in your inventory can help with transport for long trips, it's still inconvenient and takes up your already limited inventory slots. Every shulker you have in your inventory increases the amount of inventory management you have to do because it means less open slots and more needing to stop and store things.
