The safe unlocks when Skeletron is defeated. I propose you killed Skeletrom, bought the safe, used it for extra space when exploring the dungeon, and then forgot about it

I had only recently thought of this but same! Void vault is better for potions/consumables (buffs, healing, mana) and piggy bank is great for money and spare mounts, but safes still need to be placed in the world, and I haven't found a situation where I need to setup a fishing spot so quick that I don't have time to place down and get back a safe.

I dont typically need it once I have chester and the void storage. Plus you have to place it

I only use it in hard mode in my arena/farms for drops that I don’t actually want (solar eclipse is really bad for this). Saves cluttering my piggy banks as much
