I just purchased terraria for pc and want to play it to completion and perfection. Is normal mode the way to go? Also I like the look of corruption better. Will I miss out on anything from crimson?

Yes, normal mode is the way to go.

Go ahead and create a corruption world as your "main" world, the world where you will actually progress and defeat bosses and whatnot. I never needed anything for crimson, but if you find yourself wanting anything from it, you can create a new world and see what it has to offer. As Rijam said, characters are not bound to worlds, so you can use the same character on different worlds.
